Macella Survives Day of Drama For Winter Open Main Event Day 1b Chip Lead

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Justin Macella
Justin Macella

Justin Macella was on the wrong end of a royal flush and a two-outer on the river, yet he still played well enough and found enough fortune himself to earn the Day 1b chip lead of the $2,000 bestbet Winter Open Main Event.

Rollercoaster hands and dramatic suckouts were the themes throughout the day as many players found themselves on the bad end of long odds in big hands before their day was done.

In the end, 30 players truly survived to advance on to Sunday’s Day 2, where combined with those advancing from Friday’s opening flight, 48 now return, with 41 making the money.

The 397 total entries created a prizepool of $580,425, with a min-cash Sunday worth $3,577, while the eventual champion on Monday will receive $122,017 and the champion’s trophy.

Many players contended for the end-of-night chip lead before Macella solidified his spot atop the leaderboard, but he’ll be among a group of players entering Day 2 still more than 100,000 chips behind day 1a chip leader, Brett Feder and his total of 650,000.

What a Day!

It didn’t take long for the fireworks to begin, as on the second level of the day, Thomas Carroll was the beneficiary of a dealer error where an extra card was burned, with the turn being replaced and becoming the river burn card, and the correct turn card then becoming one of the five outs he needed to survive. Carroll would go on to make it on to Day 2.

George Zinaty ran his kings into aces on the same level, but flopped a king to win a big pot, and he too would advance to play for the money on Sunday.

As mentioned earlier, Macella was on the wrong end of a royal flush that kept Mark Goulding’s tournament alive. Goulding went on from there to bag the sixth biggest stack of the day with 307,000.

Macella was later the victim of a two-outer against Fred Paradis that cost him more than a quarter of his stack, but he rebuilt quickly, then locked up his chip lead with a big hand against Cody Durden late in the day.

Also among the 30 players advancing from Saturday’s flight were Kelley Slay (222,000), Ron Germany (207,000), David Dibernardi (180,000), and Hunter Cichy (43,000).

Some of those who couldn’t make it through to Day 2 included Jeffrey Trudeau, Edward Mroczkowski, Michael Jagroo, Kelly Slay, and Edward Sebesta.

The Plan for Day 2

Those final 48 will return to the bestbet Jacksonville poker room at noon local time, where just six eliminations will be needed to reach the money. From there, they will continue on until just eight players remain. That eight-handed final table will resume Monday at 4 p.m. under the lights of the bestbetLIVE streaming stage.

Play resumes Sunday with 13 minutes remaining in level 14 at blinds of 2,000/4,000/4,000, the point where play was stopped on Day 1a. Levels extend to 60 minutes in length for the remainder of the tournament, with breaks every two levels, and a 30-minute dinner break scheduled after level 20.

Keep your browser locked on PokerNews as our live reporting coverage continues Sunday, and right up until a champion is crowned on Monday.

A Late One for Macella

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Justin Macella
Justin Macella

Justin Macella may have just regained the chip lead before night's end as with about 25,000 in the pot on a flop of {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs}, Hyndi Khomutetsky checked in the big blind and Macella bet 20,000 from the hijack.

Cody Durden called on the button, but Khomutetsky folded.

The turn brought the {9-Spades} and Macella now bet 63,000. Durden went into the tank saying he was folding a monster before tossing {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} into the muck face up.

Durden's top pair, top kicker would have been in trouble, as Macella showed him {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} for an overpair of kings.

Macella Benefits Big from an "Oops"

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Justin Macella
Justin Macella

After an early position raise to 6,000, Justin Macella three-bet to 21,000 in middle position. The button then jammed for about 90,000, and after the original raiser folded, Macella called.

Button player: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Justin Macella: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

"Oops" said the button as the cards were turned over and he realized he would need a lot of help to survive.

The flop did bring most of that help as it came {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades}, giving him a flush draw. But the {4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} runout gave Macella a winning full house to put him back into the chip lead.

Paradis Hits Dream River Card

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Fred Paradis
Fred Paradis

It's been a day of suckouts and river miracles, with the latest going to Fred Paradis.

After Jonathan Cronin moved all in on the button for 16,000, Paradis re-jammed for 60,000 in the small blind.

Justin Macella woke up with a hand in the big blind and shoved as well to put both players at risk.

Jonathan Cronin: {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Fred Paradis: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Justin Macella: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

Macella smashed the flop with the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{4-Spades} giving him two pair and a commanding lead. The {2-Diamonds} on the turn changed nothing, but the river was the {8-Hearts}, giving Paradis trip eights to steal away the win and survive.

Schaedlich Surging After Dinner

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Brian Schaedlich
Brian Schaedlich

A large stack was just spotted in front of Brian Schaedlich, and he shared the details of a couple of hands that saw his stack vault to one of the chip leaders.

According to Schaedlich, after raising to 5,000 under the gun and getting one caller in the small blind, his opponent checked to him on a {10-}{8-}{2-} flop and he continued for 5,000 more.

The small blind check-raised to 16,000 and Schaedlich called.

On the {5-} turn, the small blind led for 15,000 and Schaedlich called again.

The small blind bet 30,000 on the {3-} river and Schaedlich called once more.

His opponent showed {a-}{10-} for top pair, top kicker, but Schaedlich held {j-}{j-} for a winning overpair.

Shortly after, versus the same opponent who moved all in for approximately 30,000, Schaedlich called with {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} but was in trouble against his opponent's {q-}{q-}.

The {a-}{a-Clubs}{5-Clubs} brought Schaedlich a flush draw which came in on the turn with the {8-Clubs}. The river bricked out and Schaedlich added more to his quickly growing stack.

Royal Flush? Royal Flush!

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Mark Goulding
Mark Goulding

Justin Macella has been building one of the biggest stacks throughout the day, but Mark Goulding may have found the secret to beat him, or anyone for that matter.

After Macella opened in middle position and got called by Nick Raio in the hijack, Goulding moved all in for about 30,000 in the cutoff. Macella called and Raio folded.

What appeared to be a simple flip turned into anything but.

Mark Goulding: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Justin Macella: {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} giving Goulding the nut flush and a nearly insurmountable lead.

The turn {7-Hearts} clinched the hand for him, and then the {j-Diamonds} on the river gave Goulding the royal flush for some extra fun!

Suckouts Galore!

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Cameron Payne
Cameron Payne

It seems like there have been a lot of underdogs winning hands today in the bestbet Jacksonville poker room.

The latest beneficiary of good fortune was Cameron Payne, who moved in for 13,900 from middle position after an early position open to 2,500 from Ryan Hogan.

The button then four-bet to 26,000, which sent Hogan's cards to the muck and put Payne at risk.

Cameron Payne: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}
Button player: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Sure enough, the dealer put the {9-Diamonds} in the window, followed by a remaining board of {7-Spades}{4-Spades}{j-Clubs}{7-Hearts} to take the hand and earn a healthy double-up.

Petiote Rivers Oliveira

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Lunique Petiote
Lunique Petiote

Action was folded around to Mario Oliveira in the small blind and he raised to 2,400. Lunique Petiote three-bet in the big blind to 8,800 and Oliveira called.

On the {4-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, the players checked to see the {2-Spades} fall on the turn. This time Oliveria led out for 8,500, but he was met with an all-in bet from Petiote for Oliveira's remaining 18,000 chips.

After a bit of pause, Oliveira decided to commit the rest of his stack and it appeared he was in very good shape.

Mario Oliveira: {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Lunique Petiote: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Olivera held top pair with the only flush draw, while Petiote would need a non-heart ace, king, or five to snatch away the pot.

The dealer put the {5-Diamonds} on the river, giving Petiote exactly what he needed in the form of a wheel to send Pereira to the rail in unceremonious fashion.

Rash Eliminates Miles in Classic Flip

Level 5 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Steven Rash
Steven Rash

After David Dibernardi raised to 1,200 in early position and got called by Timothy Miles in the hijack, Steven Rash three-bet to 4,600 in the big blind.

Dibernardi called, but then Miles moved all in for about 22,500, Rash moved in over top for just under 50,000, and Dibernardi folded what he said were queens.

The hands were revealed and if Dibernardi's claim was true, Rash wouldn't be making a set in this hand.

Timothy Miles: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Steven Rash: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The board came {5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, sending the pot to Rash, while Miles hit the rail.

Zinaty Eliminates Sebesta in Huge Cooler

Level 3 : Blinds 200/300, 300 ante
George Zinaty
George Zinaty

A massive cooler has sent recent PokerGO Cup event winner Edward Sebesta to the rail and given George Zinaty a big boost to his stack.

After Zinaty opened to 600 from middle position, Donald Graham three-bet to 2,100 in the cutoff. Sebesta now moved in for his last 7,500 on the button.

Now back on Zinaty, he moved in over top for about 22,500, as did Graham for about 27,500, covering both players.

Edward Sebesta: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
George Zinaty: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Donald Graham: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}

Graham appeared to be in a dream situation to score a pair of eliminations, but the {k-Hearts}{7-Spades}{10-Spades} flop changed everything, giving Zinaty the lead with trip kings.

The {10-Diamonds} gave him a full house and left Sebesta drawing dead, and the {7-Hearts} on the river clinched the hand for Zinaty, leaving Graham with a short stack that would disappear soon after.
