Macella Takes Big Chip Lead to bestbet Winter Open Main Event Final Table

Level 21 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Justin Macella
Justin Macella

After making the most of a wacky Day 1b flight to take the second-largest stack into Day 2, Justin Macella thrived on Sunday to take a huge chip lead to Monday’s final table of the $2,000 bestbet Winter Open Main Event.

With the help of some big hands and a bit of day 1b-esque fortune, Macella will take 2,635,000 chips onto the bestbetLIVE stage Monday, almost 800,000 more than his next closest competitor, Russell Quick (1,800,000). Michael Frierson is the only other player to take a seven-figure bag to the final table with 1,425,000.

The Day’s Action

It took just eight hours to thin the 48 remaining players down to the final nine. It was an even quicker sprint into the money, as in less than an hour, seven players were eliminated, with a dramatic double elimination of Hunter Cichy and Dane Cass bursting the bubble with no hand-for-hand play needed.

From there the final 41 players did their best to climb the ladders toward that final table, but only that final nine will return, with the likes of Jacob Ferro (28th - $4,081), the chip leader entering the day, Brett Feder (24th - $4,725), and a pair of 2022 Winter Open final tablists, David Dibernardi (34th - $3,577) and Adam Wells (13th - $8,002) falling by the wayside.

Macella’s Road to the Chip Lead

Macella was in the upper portion of the chip counts most of the day, but it was an “uh oh” moment similar to much of what happened Saturday that vaulted him over a million chips and really got him going.

Macella three-bet all-in for 36 big blinds with a dominated ace, then needed not one, but two of his kicker to hit to avoid elimination and score a massive double-up. From there, he built his stack further by taking chunks from the other big stacks around him to solidify his spot atop the counts by night’s end.

The Final Table Awaits

The final nine players will return to bestbet Jacksonville at 2 p.m. Monday to play under the lights of the bestbetLIVE streaming stage. Play will resume with 30:21 remaining in level 21 with blinds of 10,000/20,000 with a 20,000 big blind ante.

PokerNews will cover the action on the same 30-minute delay as the stream so as to avoid spoilers. Keep your browsers locked here for all the excitement Monday when the champion will be crowned.

Rodney Turvin Eliminated in 10th Place ($12,201)

Level 21 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Rodney Turvin
Rodney Turvin

Rodney Turvin moved his last 200,000 in from the hijack and got called by Michael Frierson in the big blind.

Rodney Turvin: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Michael Frierson: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

While Turvin had found a very good hand to go with, he'd run into Frierson's monstrous pair of kings.

The board came {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, bringing no help to Turvin, sending him to the rail short of the final table and ending the night.

The final nine players will now return at 2 p.m. Monday to play the final table.

Stay tuned for complete chip counts and a recap of the day's action.

Hyndi Khomutetsky Eliminated in 11th Place ($9,813)

Level 21 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Hyndi Khomutetsky
Hyndi Khomutetsky

Down to her last big blind, Hyndi Khomutetsky moved it in from the cutoff. After Bryce McVay called in the small blind, David Tuthill moved all in for 600,000 from the big blind and McVay folded.

Hyndi Khomutetsky: {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
David Tuthill: {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}

The board came {2-Spades}{q-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, pairing Tuthill's eight on the turn to lock up the hand and send Khomutetsky home short of the final table.

Charles Campos Eliminated in 12th Place ($9,813)

Level 21 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Charles Campos
Charles Campos

After Charles Campos limped in the cutoff, Thomas Carroll moved all in from the blinds for 310,000. Campos made the call to put Carroll at risk.

Thomas Carroll: {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Charles Campos: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Campos had trapped Carroll with his pair of tens, but there were still five cards to come.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Spades} giving Carroll backdoor opportunities, and those grew significantly with the {j-Spades} turn.

The river then brought Carroll the {3-Spades} to give him the winning flush and a needed double-up, leaving Campos very short.

A couple of hands later Campos moved in in the big blind over a Toby Boas button raise and Boas called.

Charles Campos: {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}
Toby Boas: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

The board came {2-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{a-Spades} to eliminate Campos.

Adam Wells Eliminated in 13th Place ($8,002)

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Adam Wells
Adam Wells

After a button raise from Toby Boas, Adam Wells moved all in from the big blind for 150,000.

Boas didn't love it, but he made the call.

Adam Wells: {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Toby Boas: {j-Spades}{7-Spades}

Wells' ace-high held through the {2-Clubs}{q-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop, then paired up with the {10-Clubs} on the turn.

But Boas still had an overcard and a gutshot straight draw, which came in on the river as the {8-Diamonds} fell to give Boas the hand and end Wells' hopes for a return to the winter Open Main Event Final Table.

Russell Quick Eliminates Kelley Slay in 15th Place ($6,618); John Bellotte in 14th Place ($8,002)

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Russell Quick
Russell Quick

Russell Quick has regained the chip lead following a double elimination.

Kelley Slay was all in for his last big blind in late position, while Quick and John Bellotte had built a side pot.

On the {6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop, Bellotte moved in for 330,000 from the small blind and Quick called in middle position.

Kelley Slay: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
John Bellotte: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Russell Quick: {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Both Slay and Bellotte would need to drill a two-outer with their overpairs, as Quick had flopped a full house.

The {8-Clubs} turn and {q-Clubs} river changed nothing though and Quick scored a massive double elimination to vault over two million chips.

Talesh Patel: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Maxwell Young: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

The flop came {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, giving Young a set of sixes, with the {3-Spades}{5-Spades} runout changing nothing and sending Patel home with 16th place money of $6,618.

Patni Eliminates Smith in Biggest Pot of Tournament

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Frederick Smith
Frederick Smith

With about 100,000 in the middle on a flop of {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Spades}, Aftab Patni checked in the big blind and Rodney Turvin bet 55,000 in the hijack.

Frederick Smith moved all in for 405,000 and Patni called with 115,000 behind sending Turvin into the tank.

After about five minutes, Turvin dropped a call forward, but didn't put the rest in to put Patni at risk yet.

Patni would instantly put it in on the {q-Clubs} turn and Turvin called for the last 115,000, creating the biggest pot of the tournament.

Frederick Smith: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Aftab Patni: {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Rodney Turvin: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Smith's pair of nines was drawing dead, and Turvin needed a spade to beat Patni's flopped straight.

The {3-Hearts} fell on the river clinching the massive pot for Patni, while eliminating Smith.

Macella Doubles in a Scene from Saturday

Level 20 : Blinds 10,000/15,000, 15,000 ante
Justin Macella
Justin Macella

Saturday's Day 1b saw a ton of wild hands and suckouts, and while action has been relatively sane on Day 2, the chip leader from that flight, Justin Macella just channeled a bit of that action to score a massive double-up.

After Russell Quick opened to 45,000 under the gun, Macella piled his 545,000 chip stack forward, then said "uh oh" when he got a quick call from Quick.

Justin Macella: {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}
Russell Quick: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Quick somehow got what he needed on the flop, but unfortunately for him, so did Quick as they both paired their kickers on the {j-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} board.

There were more fives in the deck though, and sure enough, the {5-Clubs} rolled off to give Macella one of his remaining two outs.

The {6-Clubs} river changed nothing and Macella dragged a massive pot to move him over a million.

Schaedlich Eliminated by Macella

Level 19 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Brian Schaedlich
Brian Schaedlich

Brian Schaedlich opened to 37,000 on the button and got called by Justin Macella in the big blind.

On the {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop, Macella checked to Schaedlich who bet 90,000. Macella then moved all in, and Schaedlich called off for about 250,000 total.

Brian Schaedlich: {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Justin Macella: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Schaedlich's two pair were up against a monster draw, which didn't hit on the {9-Spades} turn, but the {8-Spades} river completed a straight for Macella to eliminate Schaedlich in 18th place for $5,552.
