Day 2 Started

A Champion Will Be Crowned

Mike Sandler enters Day 2 as the chip leader with 355,000

A full day of action on the felt yesterday saw 194 entries and reentries recorded in Event 10, generating a total prize pool of $112,908 with $33,873 waiting up top for the eventual winner.

From the original field just 14 players remain in contention for the title, and Mike Sandler leads the way with 355,000 to work with when play resumes today at noon local time.

Sandler will be trailed closely by Joe Clarkin (336,000), while Jeremy Stein (295,000), Brian Correro (239,500), Erkut Yilmaz (223,000) and Bruce Yamron (219,500).

The terror of Atlantic City will also be back looking for another trophy for his parent's china cabinet, as longtime pro Joe McKeehen bagged 186,000 heading into this final day of play.

McKeehen is a local legend of sorts, racking up over $888,000 in reported live earnings over his four-year career on the felt, with more than a dozen cashes coming right here in the East Coast's own poker hotspot. McKeehen took down a title last January at the Borgata Winter Poker Open, and he will have a definitive edge in terms of experience when play resumes.

A number of notable names and professional players took their shot on Day 1 of this event, as Joe Kuether, Anthony Zinno, Luke Edwards, Eric Baldwin, Aaron and Ralph Massey, Dan Heimiller, Kevin Saul, Amnon Filippi, Keven Stammen, Matt Salsberg, Justin Young, Emad Alabsi and She Lok Wong all fell short of the money.

Keep it here throughout the day as PokerNews proudly provides live continuous coverage of Day 2's race to the final table - and the finish line.

Roll a Dube

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

After Erkut Yilmaz opened to 12,500 from under the gun, action folded around to Mark Dube on the button.

He three-bet to 30,500 to put the pressure back on Yilmaz, who tanked long and hard before finally surrendering the pot.

Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

Joe McKeehen began the day squarely in the middle of the pack in terms of chip count, but after being dealt pocket pairs three times in the first 15 minutes of play, he has climbed the leaderboard in short order.

McKeehen told us "they held up again" while flashing {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} and dragging in the blinds and antes, and according to the Philadelphia-based pro he has already held aces in the hole twice now. He also won an uncontested pot with a preflop raise holding {10-}{10-}, with the table now paying well-deserved respect to the dangerous player's opens.

In another pot that did reach the flop, McKeehen held just one {a-} in the hole, but of course two more bullets hit the board and he won yet another early pot.

McKeehen is a local legend of sorts, racking up over $888,000 in reported live earnings over his four-year career on the felt, with more than a dozen cashes coming right here in the East Coast's own poker hotspot. McKeehen took down a title last January at the Borgata Winter Poker Open, and now armed with a replenished stack he will surely be a force to contend with here today.

Bullets Bit

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Erkut Yilmaz - 14th Place
Erkut Yilmaz - 14th Place

Attilio Bitondo just cracked pocket aces to keep himself in contention for this Borgata Spring Poker Open title.

Erkut Yilmaz was the unfortunate victim, after he opened for 11,500 to begin the action. Brian Correro flatted that bet, and when the action folded around to Bitondo he three-bet to 50,000. Yilmaz then moved all in for about 123,000 more and Correro folded what he claims to have been {7-}{7-}.

Bitondo called off the remainder of his stack (which barely had Yilmaz covered), and tabled {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} to find himself crushed by Yilmaz and his {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.

The flop was safe for Yilmaz, coming {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades} (giving Correro's folded walking sticks a set for good measure), but the turn card came {q-Hearts} to give Bitondo his own set. The river was the {9-Diamonds} and with that the first elimination of the day occurred, leaving Yilmaz with a 14th place finish.

A Classic Flip

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Andrew Jeffrey just lost a flip to finish in 13th place
Andrew Jeffrey just lost a flip to finish in 13th place

After Joe McKeehen was kind enough to inform us that "a classic flip" was brewing over at his table, we headed over to catch Andrew Jeffrey's last hand of the tournament.

Jeffrey began the day as the short stack and needed to find a quick double in order to make a run at the final table. When he looked down to find {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} in the big blind, and an open to 13,000 from chip leader Mike Sandler in the hijack already made, his decision was an easy one.

Jeffrey three-bet shoved for his last 56,000 and Sandler made the call with {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} to put him at risk. The final board ran out {4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Sandler called the right side of the coin to notch the knockout, sending Jeffrey to the rail with a 13th place finish.

Sandler Surging, Yamron Gone

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Bruce Yamron - 12th Place
Bruce Yamron - 12th Place

After Stuart Gelwarg opened for the standard raise Mike Sandler made a creative play and smooth called with his {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}. The ploy worked to perfection when Bruce Yamron made a massive three-bet shove for about 215,000, and after Gelwarg got out of the way, Sandler snapped the bet off with his pocket rockets.

Yamron could only muster {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} for an overmatched underpair, and after the board came down {10-Spades}{k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} he made an abrupt exit from the tournament in 12th place.
