"I Can't Even Whine"

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Maurice Hawkins started it off with a raise to 4,500 and Phil Hellmuth three-bet to 15,000. The player in the small blind made the call and Hellmuth said "tough crowd. This is only my second reraise." Hawkins got out of the way but not before saying "this is your ego talking."

The flop came {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{2-Spades} and the player in the small blind check-called Hellmuth's 18,000 bet. The turn was the {3-Clubs} and the action went check-check.

The river was the {A-Clubs} and the player in the small blind led out for a small bet of 13,000. Hellmuth shook his head, started to say something, and then folded. He was shown {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} by his opponent.

"I can't even whine about how bad he played," said Hellmuth. "He had Ace-King."

It All Went Wong

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Ariel Albilia raised to 5,200 in late position, George Wong three-bet to 15,000 on his direct left, and the action folded back to Albilia. He moved all in for around 50,000 or so, and Wong tank-called.

Albilia: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Wong: {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Albilia's dominant ace held up as the board ran out {q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and Wong was eliminated.

After the hand, Layne Flack was jabbing Albilia for not smiling or being happy after the bust out. He finally flashed some teeth.

"I'm nervous," he said. "You guys are the regulars."

Matt Salsberg is Off to Take a Bath

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Matt Salsberg
Matt Salsberg

A short-stacked Matt Salsberg moved all in for the last of his stack with {7-}{7-} and was up against Roland Israelashvili and his {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}.

The screenwriter/poker player would flop good when it came {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} but he was unable to hit any of the straight draws or a seven as the turn came {2-Spades} and the river {A-Clubs} and that would be the end of the day and tournament for him.

Salsberg is still the record holder for most cashes earned by a World Poker Tour ("WPT") Player of the Year winner with six. This is also the current record for most cashes in a single WPT season, although he shares that record with three others (Abraham Gray, Barry Greenstein, and Lee Markholt).

Poker World, Prepare to Say "Awe" to South African Daniel Brits

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Daniel Brits has already made South Africa proud, but he's hoping to make a splash at the WPT World Championship here today
Daniel Brits has already made South Africa proud, but he's hoping to make a splash at the WPT World Championship here today

Daniel Brits is better known by Dian in his native South Africa, but the rest of the poker world may need to learn the nickname sometime soon.

Brits is a proud South African born in the spectacularly scenic Dainfern Valley area of Midrand, but the man with the middle name Johannes made his nation's largest city proud recently, taking down the WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic for $132,128 last November.

Held in the The Palace of Dreams casino in Johannesburg, that WPT event attracted 191 runners to prove that poker's newest hotbed is ready for the big stage. Fellow South African Ronit Chamani - an accomplished player who has made several splashes on the global circuit while also advocating for the power of a raw food diet - also made the final table to make her homeland proud.

It was Brits who claimed every chip in play though, putting on a performance to remember for South Africa's burgeoning poker community - one which owes much its current vigor to Raymond Rahme, member of the 2007 World Series of Poker Final Table. While Rahme has receded from the game somewhat in recent years, emerging stars like Brits and Chamani are ready and willing to take up the mantle.

Both were in the house here today trying to reach another WPT final table in this World Championship event, and while Chamani went bust earlier in the day, a recent hand saw Brits chip up in style.

The final board read {7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Brits led out for a 25,000 bet, with Harrison Gimbel tanking a bit before making the call. Brits rolled over bullets though, and his {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} was good for the winner.

Harwood Looking Good

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Loni Harwood
Loni Harwood

Loni Harwood has been chipping up all day long. She recently added some more chips when she picked up a small pot against Mike Dentale. Harwood made bets of 4,500 on the flop and 9,500 on the turn and Dentale check-called both wagers. The river card was dealt and the board was {J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs}{J-Spades}.

Dentale checked again. Harwood slowed down and checked behind. Dentale showed {A-Spades}{K-Spades} for Ace high while Harwood had {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} to win the hand.

Gimbel Gets Two

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
"There's always money in the banana stand"
"There's always money in the banana stand"

After unknown action on a flop of {4-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, there was a three-way all in involving Harry "ugotabanana" Kaczka, Daniel Brits, and Harrison Gimbel. Gimbel had both players covered, and crushed.

Kaczka: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Brits: {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Gimbel: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The turn and river bricked {3-Spades}, {5-Hearts} respectively, and both Kaczka and Brits hit the rail. Before leaving, Brits took a nice photo with 2012 WSOP Main Event champ Greg Merson.

Zaki Zapped, Klodnicki Klimbing

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Justin Zaki opened to 5,000 from the cutoff, only to see Chris Klodnicki three-bet to 12,500 from the button.

After thinking things through for a long minute, Zaki four-bet shoved for 56,600 more.

Klodnicki thought about his spot for a while before calling and tabling {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, which was way behind Zaki's {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

The dealer fanned the {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} to make things interesting though, as Klodnicki added a flush draw to his previously depleted arsenal of outs. The turn missed his draws, coming {q-Clubs}, but when the {5-Diamonds} fell on the river Zaki stood to make his exit.

The rest of the table enjoyed a bit of banter after the hand, commenting on Klodnicki's play, with Matt Waxman telling his tablemate "you can never say anything about me playing badly, not after that one." The needle was only a joke of course, and Klodnicki just sat and flashed a sinner's smile, knowing he had just stolen a stack with a fortuitous find on fifth street.

Sylvia Cripples Waxman

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jesse Sylvia
Jesse Sylvia

We get to the table with approximately 45,000 in the pot and a 28,500 bet in front of Jesse Sylvia. Matt Waxman is studying the board of {J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{8-Spades}. He spent minutes going back and forth between looking at Sylvia, looking at his cards, and at the tournament clock.

"Sorry," he said at one point.

He eventually made the call and Sylvia turned over {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} for the nut straight. Waxman looked pissed at himself, and tossed his cards into the muck, down to just 34,000 in chips after the hand. Sylvia in the meantime is sitting much more comfortably at 160,000.

Mo-mentum

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Maurice Hawkins
Maurice Hawkins

Maurice "Mo" Hawkins is one of the more entertaining players in the room today - and that's saying a lot, what with the brash and boisterous Will "The Thrill" Failia and Phil Hellmuth holding court in their inimitable way.

Hawkins is known for his active play and aggressive style, and with the trio of table-talkers all sitting together, the scene resembles a home game more than the WPT World Championship.

"This is a $300 tournament to me," said Hawkins during a recent pass by the table. "This isn't serious... it's fun."

While that bit of boasting may or may not be true (he is playing for more than million dollars after all), Hawkins is showing his serious side on the felt. He doubled through two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner John "World" Hennigan recently, making eights full over sixes full to push his stack up over 250,000. A few blind steals later have propelled Hawkins over 280,000 just before dinner break, giving him one of the largest stacks in play midway through the evening.
