John Tavss Leads Field After Day 1 of Event 3

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
John Tavss
John Tavss

An impressive field of 292 players made the journey to Borgata today to take part in the $560 Deep-Stack No Limit Hold 'Em Reentry tournament and by the time play concluded a little after 2:30 am there were just 27 remaining. These players will go to bed knowing that when they return tomorrow that they will have turned a profit in this event as they are now in the money. The prize pool is $141,620 and 1st place will take home an impressive $39,650.

John Tavss floated around the chip lead most of the day and made a big push at the end of the night to end as the chip leader with 705,000 in chips. Sitting in 2nd place is James Gettinger who tangled with 4th place Maggie Morris in two key hands. The first saw Gettinger fold when Morris shoved all in with the nut flush draw and the other hand had Gettinger doubling up Morris when he tried to get her to fold on the bubble. Despite the two hands, Gettinger has 645,000 in chips while Morris has 588,000. Rounding out the top three is Joe Stiers who ended the day with 622,000.

Among those who took part in the tournament but were unable to cash were Timothy Little, Tony Sinishtaj, Fred Paradis, Katayon Khaterzai, Kenneth Lind, Gerard Kane, James Woods, Greg Ostrander, Joe McKeehen, Adam Foster, Phong "VIP" Nguyen, and Luke Edwards.

Early on the story was Anthony Sivolella as he picked up Aces against Kings and then would crack Aces with a meager {K-}{9-}. He would finish the day with 476,000.

Some of the names that have moved on to Day 2 were Nick Gandhi (489,000), Tom Dobrilovic (410,000), She Lok Wong (275,000), Michael Savino (133,000), and Anna Antimony (32,000). Antimony hung on for quite some time as the short stack including a hand where she doubled up with {A-Spades}{4-Clubs} when she would hit an Ace to outdraw her opponent's {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}.

The unfortunate bubble honors would go to Catherine Dever who started the day off hot but would end up losing a race on the last hand of the evening when her {A-}{K-} was unable to improve against Roger Lovett's {10-}{10-}.

Play will resume tomorrow afternoon and if today is any indication it's going to be a great end of the tournament. PokerNews will be there to capture all of the action. Tune in to find out who emerges victorious!

James Gettinger Makes Big Fold But Still Holds Chip Lead

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
James Gettinger

Maggie Morris opened the action to 12,500 and received three calls including one from the chip leader James Gettinger. The flop came nine high with two diamonds. Morris checked and the player to her immediate left bet 20,000. Gettinger quickly called and when it came back to Morris she announced that she was all in - for 304,500 total.

The original raiser folded and a perplexed Gettinger shook his head while counting out a call. "Sorry, I'm going to be a minute," he said, glancing over at Morris. He looked down at the board, as if he were willing the cards to change some how, while going between counting out a call and stacking the chips back up.

"This is so tough," he groaned, his head resting on his hand while Morris took a calm sip of her water. Another player at the table joked "that's one way to make the money. I'm not going to call the clock." Gettinger shot him a look and said "can you please stop?"

The youngster ran his hands through his hair, and then placed his hand over his mouth. Leaning back, he tossed a hand up in frustration. "Oh my God. I'm thinking... going over the hand in my head... and in my head I call."

He folded, leaving himself with 600,000. He would get 125,000 chips off of Morris the next hand when she misread the board thinking she had a straight and he called with top pair.

We didn't see the hand but Maggie Morris relayed the hand to us as she was stacking some new found chips.

"I got it all in on a {9-}{8-}{3-} flop with {10-}{10-}," she told us. "He had {A-}{A-} and the turn came {7-} and the river was {J-} to give me a straight."

Morris, who recently won a tournament at PARX for $95,000, is up to 365,000 after the hand.

"I'm just lucky," she said, a smile filling her face.

Not The Wong Card

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
She Lok Wong

We catch up to the action with the following board:

{A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{K-Spades}{2-Hearts}

She Lok Wong placed out an 80,000 bet. It's a large bet relative to the pot - more than half the pot size. His opponent thought for a moment and tossed out a call. He could only mutter under his breath when he saw Wong's unbeatable hand... {Q-}{10-} for the nut straight. That hand moved Wong well above the half million mark in chips which is good enough for the chip lead with 40 players remaining.

Staying Alive

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante
Anna Antimony
Anna Antimony

A short stacked Anna Antimony moved all in when it was folded to her in late position. The player to her immediate left also moved all in. The last two players left to act folded and the cards were turned over... {A-Spades}{4-Clubs} for Antimony and {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for her opponent.

"Can I get an Ace," she asked. Ask and ye shall receive. The dealer put out a {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop.

"There you go," said one of her table mates.

The turn was the {8-Diamonds} and the river was the {7-Diamonds} and Antimony scored the double up.

"The best hand doesn't win here," she said, almost not believing her luck.

Anthony Sivolella on Better End of Cooler

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Anthony Sivolella
Anthony Sivolella

It's always nice to get pocket Aces. It's even nicer when another player at the table picks up pocket Kings. Usually this means one thing - all the chips are going in the middle. This is precisely what happened moments ago when Sivolella picked up the bullets and a young lady across the table from him had the misfortune of finding Cowboys. To top things off, an Ace hit the board and Sivolella would hit a full house to send his opponent home with nothing to show for her efforts.

Sivolella is up to 215,000 after the hand.

Phong "VIP" Nguyen

Phong "VIP" Nguyen, who finished runner-up in Event 2 earlier this morning, was just eliminated holding the best hand in poker.

Nguyen was at risk with {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} on a flop of {8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, and Bernard Liberati was drawing with {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. The turn was the {q-Diamonds}, giving him a diamond flush, and the {a-Clubs} bricked off on the river.

"Where can I rebuy?" Nguyen asked the table after the hand.

Liberati is up to 80,000 chips.

The Land of Lind

Level 3 : 75/150, 0 ante
Kenneth Lind's calling card
Kenneth Lind's calling card

Kenneth Lind is one of the only players in the room right now who can claim to own a World Series of Poker gold bracelet, as he took down the Seniors Event Championship last summer.

Lind is a gregarious fellow prone to backclaps and banter, and his genuine interest in the players he meets during his tournament travels is evident in every exchange.

Like Barry Greenstein before him, this WSOP champion has taken to giving a gift to players who bust him from a tournament, and while Lind's calling card is not as flashy as an autographed copy of Ace on the River, it holds a certain meaning nonetheless.

We just saw Lind handing out another of these tokens of appreciation, with young grinder Pete Tarsiewicz the recipient of the unusual gift. Although Tarsiewicz did not dispatch Lind from the tournament (in actuality, Tarsiewicz himself went bust and Lind offered the card as a memento), he was appreciative of the curio given by a poker champion.

He was a little curious as well, heading over to the PokerNews Live Reporting desk to inquire about the mysterious handout, before chuckling when he heard the backstory. Tarsiewicz then headed to the registration desk to reenter, and if he plays his cards right on the felt and eventually busts Lind, he very well may have a pair of calling cards to call his own.
