Cotton Snuffer Just Won Half the Pot... and You Know What Heisenberg Has to Say About Half Measures
Cotton Snuffer Just Won Half the Pot... and You Know What Heisenberg Has to Say About Half Measures

Cotton Snuffer took down a tournament already at the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open - winning Event 5 for a $63,882 score to start the series off with a bang - but we have a feeling his presence would have been felt regardless of the big win.

Snuffer bears an uncanny resemblance to Walter White of the iconic television series Breaking Bad, and when he tops it off with a black porkpie hat the effect is chilling to say the least.

We watched Snuffer play a three-handed pot to the river recently, and when it was all said and done not much had changed.

The final board read {j-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Spades}{j-Hearts} by the river and all three players checked it down with the board pairing. Snuffer rolled over his {2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} in a manner that suggested he thought the pot was his, and his confidence was understandable as he held a well-concealed straight. Unfortunately for the man they call Heisenberg here at the Borgata, his opponent held the same hand with {2-Spades}{4-Clubs} and the pot was chopped up.

A small profit for Snuffer to be sure, but if he's anything like his alter ego only full measures will leave him satisfied.

Satellite Into the $3,500 World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship at 7 p.m. Local Time

The World Poker Tour Champion's Cup is at Stake Starting Now

The World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship is finally here, and for the first time ever PokerNews will be providing live coverage of the tournament straight from the luxurious Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

The flagship event on the Borgata Winter Poker Open schedule will run from Jan. 26-31. The tournament features a buy-in of $3,500 with two starting flights and a $3 million guaranteed prize pool. Re-entry will be available on Day 1a for those who are eliminated before Level 6, and players eliminated on Day 1a may also re-enter on Day 1b.

For those on the fence about putting up $3,500 to play, there's still plenty of time to qualify through a satellite tournament. Borgata is hosting one last live qualifier tonight, offering players a chance to win a seat to the WPT event for a fraction of the buy-in.

Here's a look at the qualifier schedule this weekend:

DateTimeEventBuy-in
Jan. 267 p.m.NLHE Championship Qualifier (Re-entry)$500+50 (1 in 7 get a seat)

Looking back at the history of the event, the first WPT stop at the Borgata took place in Season 2 from Sept. 20-22, 2003, a few short months after Chris Moneymaker ignited the poker boom by winning the World Series of Poker Main Event. The 2003 WPT Borgata Poker Open had a $5,000 price tag and attracted 235 players, creating a prize pool of $1,175,000. The final table included former world champion Carlos Mortensen and fellow poker pro David Oppenheim, but in the end it was Noli Francisco who emerged victorious, making Borgata history in the process.

Since then, the WPT has visited the Borgata at least once every year. After the Borgata Poker Open buy-in was changed to $10,000 in Season 3, the WPT visited the venue twice in Season 4 with the addition of the Borgata Winter Poker Open. Michael Mizrachi won his second WPT title in that event, and it was subsequently won by big names like John Hennigan (Season 5) and Gavin Griffin (Season 6) before being removed from the schedule for five years.

A major change to the WPT Borgata Poker Open was made in Season 8. The buy-in was dropped to $3,500 and the tournament was changed to a multi-entry format. The number of entrants skyrocketed to 1,018 — the largest in WPT history — and well-known pro Olivier Busquet went on to claim victory and the top prize of $925,000.

The event grew even more in Season 9. Dwyte Pilgrim bested a field of 1,042 in dramatic fashion, winning his first major tournament in his own backyard. The largest WPT Borgata event ever took place the following year when 1,313 entrants took to the felt. Bobby Oboodi was the last man standing, collecting $922,441 and the honor of winning the biggest WPT Borgata event ever — a record that still stands today.

The WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open returned last year after the five-year hiatus, and Andy Hwang took down the championship event for $730,053. Hwang outlasted a field of 1,042 including a final table that featured eventual WPT Player of the Year Matt Salsberg (sixth place).

Nick Guagenti, in the small blind, check-raised to 6,500 after the big blind bet 1,500 and the button called on a flop of {5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Only the big blind called, and the turn brought a {k-Hearts} and two checks. The {7-Hearts} completed the board, and Guagenti checked again. The big blind bet 2,500, and Guagenti quickly tossed out 20,000. His opponent showed the {9-Hearts} after about 30 seconds, laying his hand down.

We overheard Men "The Master" Nguyen happily congratulating himself for making a big laydown, and while we missed the cards as the dealer scrambled, a scan of Nguyen's chip stack showed why he's in such a good mood.

Nguyen has chipped up rather quickly after arriving to the tournament during the last level, and with his propensity for aggressive play and wild swings, we expect "The Master" to put those chips to good use as Day 1a marches on.

Ladies in Waiting

Eddy Sabat on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event
Eddy Sabat on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event

After an opening raise to 900 by a player in middle position, the player on the button three-bet jammed for his last 17,700.

Eddie Sabat was laying in wait with his {Q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} though, and he moved all in himself, putting about 19,000 in the pot before trying to goad the original raiser into a light call.

"Could be an early Christmas for you..." said Sabat, feigning weakness.

The bait failed to attract any fish, however, and the preflop opener mucked his cards. Sabat rolled over his queens and found himself far in front of the jammer's {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

The final board ran out {8-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} to keep the ladies in the lead, and Sabat earned the double up to move back above the starting stack.

JohnnyBax Down

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
Cliff Josephy on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event
Cliff Josephy on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event

We caught the tail end of a hand in which three players decided to wager around 21,000 on the turn, with Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy and Jeremy Menard both risking the last of their stacks in doing so.

The board read {7-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} by the turn and Roland Israelashvili had bet 11,200 into a pot containing more than 14,000. According to Nick Guagenti - who was out of the hand and thus free to fill us in - the pot was played six-handed to the flop, and four-handed to the turn.

With a sizable bet now to him, one worth more than half of his stack, Josephy decided to move all in over the top, putting 18,825 in the middle and waiting for Menard's response. That came soon enough, as Menard's 21,375 was shipped in as well, putting Israelashvili to a decision that, mathematically speaking, shouldn't have been too difficult given the bet-sizing.

Despite only needing to call about 10,000 more to have a chance at a huge pot with more than 65,000 up for grabs, Israelashvili tanked for about a minute while standing and asking the dealer to spread the chips in the middle. Eventually, Israelashvili announced the call though, and after a lengthy delay the cards that created this collision were revealed.

Showdown:

Israelashvili: {k-Spades}{2-Spades}
Josephy: {4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Menard: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Menard had flopped the joint with his nut straight, Josephy hit the butt end and was drawing dead to a chop, and Israelashvili was searching for spades to scoop one of the biggest pots of the day.

River: {4-Diamonds}

"Four!" said Josephy with a sardonic smile. "I win right?"

"I did flop it..." answered Menard as the two talked the hand over quickly while Josephy headed off.

"I know you did," replied Josephy, smiling like a man who knows he can fire another bullet or five at will tomorrow without denting his bankroll. "It's a re-entry... I couldn't help myself."

Well, Do You Feel Lucky?

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
Here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event, Everybody Needs a Little Luck... Shaun Suller Brought a Little Luck of His Own
Here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event, Everybody Needs a Little Luck... Shaun Suller Brought a Little Luck of His Own

No matter how a player approaches the game of poker - calculating every decision to achieve optimal results, going with their gut or simply letting their cards dictate the action - everybody at the table needs a little luck to get by. Whether in the form of superstitious habits, favorite card protectors or even a particular meal before a long session, poker players all hope to have luck at their back when they sail out into the tempestuous seas of a long tournament.

For one player here today at the Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event, luck is squarely on his side and it will be for as long he's here. Shaun Suller made sure of that.

Suller decided to don an Indianapolis Colts jersey featuring the name and number of that team's phenom quarterback. And while an Andrew Luck jersey sighting a month or two ago would have been standard fare for a football fan on the felt, with the Super Bowl slated for next Sunday and the Colts sitting at home, we suspect Suller's fashion statement is more superstition than super fandom.

Kevin Eyster, shown here in an earlier event.

Seth Berger and Kevin Eyster checked out of the blinds to Michael Gagliano on the button, who fired 1,800 on the {2-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{4-Spades} flop. Berger thought for a bit before folding, and Eyster immediately pushed his remaining 7,000 or so forward. Gagliano snap-called.

Gagliano: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Eyster: {j-Spades}{8-Spades}

"There it is," someone at the table said as the dealer flipped over the {2-Clubs} for the turn, rendering Eyster's flush draw meaningless. A six completed the board, and Eyster was ousted.
