Gelman Claims Day 1a Chip Lead in Event #10: $300 Deepest Stack Double Header; Stone and Buzgon Also In

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Gary Gelman

Day 1a of Event #10: $300 Deepest Stack Double Header has come to an end after 16 30-minute levels with 105 survivors making it through to Day 2. The first twelve levels of the day attracted 650 entries giving the tenth tournament on the schedule of the 2020 Borgata Winter Poker Open a great shot at surpassing last year’s attendance numbers.

Grabbing the chip lead honors for Day 1a is Gary Gelman with 647,000 in chips. He has collected over $270,000 in live tournament cashes in just over a decade according to The Hendon Mob with his biggest score a few months back when he finished in 16th place in the Black Chip Bounty tournament during the Borgata Fall Poker Open. As a matter of fact, four out of his top five cashes were collected at the payout desk here at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa.

Gelman is accompanied by Artur Dukaj (596,000) and She Lok Wong (535,000) on the podium. The top five is completed by Rob Saladin and John Manzella. Other notable big stacks include Adam Harrow, Albert Nguyen, Michael Haberman, Po Ying, Ryan Eriquezzo, Steven Snyder, and many more players.

BorgataPoker.com Pros Katie Stone and Daniel Buzgon also made Day 2 with 276,000 and 191,000 in chips respectively. Another familiar name to the Borgata regulars is David Jackson. The 2019 Borgata Spring and Fall Poker Open Championship winner will be returning to the felt with 181,000 in chips.

Not everyone was that fortunate though, Kevin Mathers, Men Nguyen, Erik Cajelais, and the defending champion Ralph Macri fell at one of the many hurdles Day 1a brought them but most players who busted in the first starting flight have taken another shot by entering Day 1b which started at 5 p.m. local time.

When the players return at noon on Tuesday, January 21, they will join the players who managed to make the cut on Day 1b to battle it out for their share of the prize pool which has already surpassed the $200,000 guarantee. The full chip counts of all surviving players will be posted before the start of the day with the corresponding seat draw.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be there from the first cards in the air until the winner has been crowned so make sure to follow along to see who else will be bringing a BWPO trophy home with them!

Last Year's Runner Up

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Everton Taylor
Everton Taylor

Last year, this event ended in a heads-up deal with Ralph Macri taking first place. The other half of that deal was Everton Taylor, who took second place and $49,026.

Although Macri busted out of this flight earlier tonight, Taylor is still in the hunt, although as they play the last three hands, he's only got ~50,000 chips (8 big blinds).

Kordys Wins Three-Way

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Rafal Kordys
Rafal Kordys

It was all over but the stacking on Table 1. Rafal Kordys (big blind) had won a three-way all-in holding {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} against Seat 10 with {q-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and Seat 2, who had pocket Kings.

The final board read {j-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{q-Spades}{9-Spades} and Kordys had rivered a straight to scoop both main and side pots. Seat 10 was felted and Seat 2 was left short, busting out on the next hand.

By the time he finished stacking, it appeared Kordys was playing close to 400,000.

Defending Champion Macri is In

The board read {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} with almost 40,000 in the middle.

The player in the under-the-gun position checked and Ralph Macri shoved from the middle position for 22,700. His opponent contemplated his options for a bit and then made the call with {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for top pair. Macri held {5-Clubs}{4-Spades} for the flopped two pair.

The river completed the board with the {8-Hearts} to keep Macri ahead and double him up.

Demetrios Frangias
Demetrios Frangias

Demetrios Frangias has turned up on Table 24 with more than 350,000 chips — close to nine times the starting stack of 40,000.

Needless to say, he's the chip leader as players resume play following the break.

Registration remains open through the next four levels and a break, so still plenty of time to get in on the action!

Dentale Detonates

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Mike Dentale
Mike Dentale

The board read {9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} with Mike Dentale all-in for 12,900 preflop with {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} in front of him. Charlie Marchese had a bet a front of him a few seats over while holding {j-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for two pair.

But that wasn't what got the attention of the live reporting team; Dentale was in the middle of a foul-mouthed rant against the player on his direct left. The other player gave it back just as hard while there were several floors trying to sort the issue out which had arisen.

Apparently a player had raised, Dentale had shoved, and Marchese had called the raise, not noticing Dentale's shove. The initial raiser folded and the dealer ran the board.

The discussion was in regards to the fact that Marchese had other options according to several people even though Marchese had accepted to call the all-in anyways. Dentale wasn't too friendly to the dealer either as the floors ruled that Dentale's all-in was called by Marchese as he accepted the action.

Dentale made his way out of the tournament area in a not so quiet fashion to re-enter soon after.

Two Familiar Faces

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
David Jackson
David Jackson

David Jackson has taken his seat in this event to try and score his first cash at the 2020 Borgata Winter Poker Open.

In 2019, Jackson won the $2,700 No Limit Hold'em - Borgata Fall Poker Open Championship, defeating Paul Volpe heads-up for $211,334 after winning the $400 No Limit Hold'em - Deepstack a week before. But that's not all, he also took down the Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship after besting Shannon Shorr heads-up for $304,929 to score his two biggest live tournament cashes in his poker career up till now.

Kevin Mathers or more commonly known as Kevmath in the poker/twitter world has also traveled to Atlantic City to try and cash here. According to a tweet this morning, he has set himself with some goals, one of them was to last longer than 2 hands, and that's one goal down already as the tournament is approaching the third level of the day.
