Kenny Leads Day 1b of the 2021 Colorado Poker Championship $1,450 Main Event

Day 1b of the Bally's Black Hawk 2021 Colorado Poker Championship (CPC) $1,450 Main Event drew 121 entries, bringing the two-day total up to 191 with one flight remaining. After a full day of play, Mike Kenny (546,000) finished the day atop the leader board with 18 players advancing in total.

Kenny, a native of Virginia Beach, VA has spent the last week in Colorado visiting a friend in Pueblo, a city two hours south of Black Hawk. Stating the reason for his vacation was that he needed to get away, Kenny came up to Black Hawk earlier in the CPC to play some poker, only to find out there was a full tournament series occurring.

As for his run today, Kenny eclipsed 100,000 shortly before the dinner break after scoring a knockout with pocket aces. By the last level of the night, he had more than doubled that amount before flopping a set of tens and taking a stack of more than 200,000 from Svetlana Martie, who had flopped a set of fours. The boost put him on top of the counts, where he finished just shy of Day 1a chip leader Rocco Palumbo's 554,500.

Edwin Parker (473,500) finished second on the day, amassing a stack early in the afternoon and never really slowing down as play progressed through the evening. Eric Smidinger (456,000) also bagged a sizeable stack, well clear of the only two other players to finish the day above 200,000 in Jorden Helstern (265,500) and Jason Johnson (217,000).

Other notables to advance included Aaron Frei (193,500), Rich Dixon (186,000), Al Hart (152,500), Justin Liberto (134,500), and Ian Pelz (72,500). Plenty more failed to advance, including Dapo Ajayi, Ben Keeline, Aaron Thomas, Greg Collins, and current CPC points leader Bobby Sanoubane.

One flight remains for all who have yet to make it through to Sunday's Day 2, with play resuming Saturday for Day 1c at noon local time. PokerNews will be on the floor once more bringing you concluding coverage of Day 1 action. See you then.

Two Players Reach Half a Million

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Edwin Parker
Edwin Parker

Al Hart raised to 8,000 in the cutoff and received a call from Edwin Parker in the small blind. Jason Remshardt then squeezed in the big blind, three-betting to 30,000 and receiving calls from both Hart and Parker.

The flop dropped {10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{j-Spades} and all three players checked, bringing the turn {6-Clubs}. Parker overbet-jammed with a covering stack, sending Remshardt deep into the tank. He eventually found a fold and Hart quickly folded behind, earning Parker the pot and making him the first player in the field to reach 500,000.

Moments later, Svetlana Martie was seen making her way from the tournament area. Martie had chipped up to 230,000 only to run a set of fours into a set of tens held by Mike Kenny, which vaulted his stack to 550,000 just moments after Parker reached the 500K mark.

Bobby Garcia was also eliminated from Martie's table, with the pair of bust-outs bringing the field down to 18 across two full tables.

Kenny Shoots One Down

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Mike Kenny
Mike Kenny

Mike Kenny was in the small blind and found himself facing an open-jam for 46,500 from the cutoff. He was happy to participate.

All-In Player: {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Mike Kenny: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

A ten in the window of {5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Clubs} provided a small sweat, but running {3-Spades}{2-Clubs} left his bullets best and sent his opponent to the showers.

Twenty-two players now remain, with Keith Wright and John Smith also having been eliminated earlier in the level.

Parker Backs Into a Flush for a Stack

Edwin Parker

All of the chips got into the middle on a flop of {6-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} with Brian Wienhoff at risk for his tournament life in the hijack against Edwin Parker, who was in the big blind.

Brian Wienhoff: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Edwin Parker: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

Wienhoff was way out in front but running {6-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} gave Parker a flush to beat his top two pair.

"That's a flush, sir," confirmed Wienhoff as the hand completed. "You got me."

Parker Showers Two To Add To His Towers

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Edwin Parker
Edwin Parker

Noomis Jones open-jammed for 14,500 under the gun and Edwin Parker called, next to act. Another player re-jammed for 38,000 in middle position and Parker matched the difference after about 15 seconds of thought.

Noomis Jones: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Middle Position: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Edwin Parker: {a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

"One jack," requested Jones as he stood up and retrieved his backpack from the back of his seat. Instead, Parker connected with the flop {k-Clubs}{6-Spades}{7-Clubs} to take away two of Jones' outs.

The middle-position player remained in front though, primed for more than a double as the turn {5-Diamonds} came on board. The river then fell {a-Clubs} to give Parker aces up, spelling elimination for both other players involved in the hand.

Parker had been seen with a tower of chips totaling around 200K prior to the hand and now has more than a quarter-million, making him the largest stack in the room with less than 10 minutes remaining in Level 10.

Liberto Doubles Through Gutierrez

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Justin Liberto
Justin Liberto

A completed board of {6-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades} was displayed with heads-up action between Zach Gutierrez in the cutoff and Justin Liberto, who was on the cutoff. Gutierrez had checked and action was back upon him, facing a jam from Liberto for 16,400. Eventually, he found a call.

Liberto showed {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and the dealer announced his full house, quickly scooping up Gutierrez's cards in the mix before sending Liberto the pot.

Wright With a Six-Figure Stack

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Keith Wright
Keith Wright

Keith Wright saw action fold to him in the cutoff and opened to 1,700, receiving a call from the player on the button. Josh Saltz three-bet to 4,800 in the small blind and only Wright called, taking action heads up to the flop {10-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}.

Saltz checked to Wright, who fired out a bet of 4,000. Saltz looked down to his stack and counted what he had remaining, taking a few moments and finding a fold.

"I'll show you one, just 'cuz," said Wright as he tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a set.

"Nice hand," said Saltz.

"I showed you out of respect," Wright added.

"Preesh," Saltz responded.

Johnson Wins a Massive One

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Peter Johnson
Peter Johnson

Dapo Ajayi opened the action with a raise to 1,000 in early position and received a call from Peter Johnson in middle position. Aaron Frei three-bet to 5,000 in the cutoff and Jim Morrison cold-called in the big blind. Ajayi also called and then Johnson announced an raise to 10,000, doing so by mistake and prompting a five-bet to 16,000.

Morrison called all in for less, and Ajayi and Johnson also called to give Morrison a shot at quadrupling his stack while the other three continued to the flop {4-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Clubs}.

"Check," said Ajayi, first to act. Johnson then shoved all in for 36,200, sending Frei into the tank for over a minute before finding a call. Ajayi then deliberated whether or not to put his remaining chips into the middle, eventually opting not to do so.

Jim Morrison: {k-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Peter Johnson: {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}
Aaron Frei: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

Johnson's set of fours was out in front and improved further to a full house on the turn {a-Clubs}. However, the card also gave Frei six outs to improve to a bigger full house, leaving Johnson with a sweat to the river. Fortunately for him, {6-Hearts} completed the runout and a total pot of more than 130,000 was shipped his way.

Hoch Flops the Nuts

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Paul Hoch
Paul Hoch

Dimitrios Adrianakos opened to 1,100 and received a call in middle position as action folded around to the button, where Aaron Thomas also called. Both blinds also came along, the latter of which was Paul Hoch, and the five saw a flop of {10-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

Action checked to Adrianakos and he made a continuation-bet of 6,000. Middle position folded, Thomas called, and the small blind folded before Hoch announced a check-raise all in.

"A call is announced," said the dealer immediately thereafter as Adrianakos verbalized his action to send action back onto Thomas. Thomas went into the tank for over a minute, stating at one point that he had outs, and eventually folded.

Paul Hoch: {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Dimitrios Adrianakos: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Hoch's flopped nuts needed only to fade running outs to Adrianakos' overpair, and he did that with ease as {3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} left Adrianakos dead to the river en route to the double.
