Joe Pelton Doubles Through Theodoros Aidonopoulos

We caught up to this hand on the turn. With the board reading {Q-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {5-Spades} and about 14,000 in the pot, Joe Pelton was facing a bet of roughly 8,500 from his lone opponent Theodoros Aidonopoulos. Pelton thought for a bit, trying to get a read on Aidonopoulos and he eventually pushed his entire stack of 17,500 across the betting line.

Aidonopoulos made a relatively quick call and tabled {A-?} {6-?}. Pelton flipped up the better {A-?} {8-?}. The {8-Spades} on the river sealed the deal for the 2006 WPT Legends of Poker champion and two-time WPT finalist. His two pair was good and he survived to double his stack up to just shy of 50,000.

Tournament Update

Play is scheduled to conclude upon completion of level 16 or when the field reaches 32 players, whichever occurs first. There will be just one 60-minute dinner break this evening which will begin at the completion of level 12.

River Raise Can't Deter Chesnokov

Andrey Chesnokov opened for 3,200 and Ed de Haas made the call from the button. The flop came down {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {5-Clubs} and Chesnokov checked to de Haas, who bet 4,000. Chesnokov called. The turn was the {2-Hearts} and both players checked. The river fell the {Q-Hearts} and Chesnokov led out for 5,600. De Haas slid out a stack of red chips, making a raise to 20,000, only to have Chesnokov shove all in for about 20,000 more, which would put de Haas all in. Shaking his head, the gentle giant mucked his cards, left with 18,000 in chips to work with.

Rafe Furst Eliminated

After a volatile day on the felt that saw his chip stack rise from 11,000 to 60,000 and fall back down again, Rafe Furst moved all in for his case 7,900 from the cutoff and Hafiz Khan made the call from the button.

Furst: {A-Spades} {10-Spades}

Khan: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}

The board ran out {J-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}, Furst rivering a straight, but Khan rivering an ace-high flush to send the "Tiltboy" to the rail.

Minus an Abacus

Merd!
Merd!
It's gone the shape of the pear for the French contingent who are dropping like lemmings on a tightrope. Not only have we lost Nicolas Levi, Fabrice Soulier and Arnaud Mattern, but we're now missing resident 'Abacus' and wily veteran Michel Abecassis. I didn't see the hand myself, but fellow blogger and French insider Benjo supplied the news...

"He lost a coin-flip for a 115,000 pot," he began dejectedly as his subjects continue to fall, "This dude [Jens Klaning] raised it up from the button with nines, the Abacus reraised from the small blind with A-K and the guy pushed. The Abacus thought he wouldn't do that with aces or kings and that he was 50-50 at worst, so made the call, but the nines stood up."

You can normally count on the Abacus, but not today.

Giorgio Bernasconi Eliminated

The tournament life of Giorgio Bernasconi has come to an end. Bernasconi got the last of his chips in holding {3-?} {3-?} against the {5-?} {5-?} of Eduardo Fernandes.

The fives held for Fernandes and that was the end of the road for Bernasconi.

Felipe Ramos Outdraws Mizrachi

Felipe Ramos
Felipe Ramos
We caught up to this hand on the flop. With well over 20,000 in the pot and the board reading {J-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {3-Hearts}, Felipe Ramos was facing a bet, or possible raise, from Robert Mizrachi. Ramos counted out his chips and then anxiously pushed all 19,400 of them out. Mizrachi quickly called the slight reraise and the players showed:

Mizrachi: {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}
Ramos: {9-Hearts} {8-Hearts}

Mizrachi held the lead with top pair, but the 2007 bracelet winner was far from being in the clear. Ramos needed a heart or running cards for a straight to take the hand.

The turn fell the {6-Hearts}. Ramos yelled out in triumph and walked away from the table as the {7-Diamonds} hit the river. He survived the hand and stacked up to just over 60,000 chips leaving Mizrachi with about 75,000.

Grinders of the Day

Michael Greco
Michael Greco
Two players who have grinded more in one day than Tony Hawk in a lifetime are British hopefuls Stuart Rutter and Michael Greco. Both started the day with less than 15,000, but have now have closer to the 35,000 mark.

Greco in particular has shown the patience of a saint, nurturing his diminutive stack for the opening levels before finally "making a move" as he put it. "I raised it up under-the-gun with K-9 suited and received two callers. Then on the Q-9-3, I check-raised all in. It was only 10,000 more, but I knew he didn't have the queen."

Rutter, meanwhile, was last spotted check-raising a {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop before having to fold to an all-in from Diogo Borges. Rutter shook his head in frustration as his bluff was caught, but he still has a playable stack of 32,000.
