Schaefer's Helpful River

Brandon Schaefer is one of the closest to winning two EPT's having finished won Deauville a couple of years back and then finished second in Monte Carlo. Schaefer is up to 64,000 here having first picked off a John Kabbaj river bluff with {7-Clubs} {7-Spades} on a {10-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {J-Clubs} {9-Hearts} board.

Soon after Schaefer bet 8,500 on the river of a {A-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {Q-Hearts} board. He was called by an upset {A-?} {5-?} which had been pipped by Schaefer's own {A-?} {Q-?}.

Bullets on the Button for Kang

There was a preflop raise from mid position, and Benjamin Kang decided to reraise from the button. Call.

They saw a {5-Spades} {4-Spades} {2-Hearts} flop, which the original raiser checked. Kang threw in 3,000, eliciting a swift and painless fold from his opponent. Kang nonchalantly flashed a pair of aces.

He's on 38,000.

Eights Lucky for Kabbaj

Eights are good
Eights are good
John Kabbaj put in a standard raise, and was called by the gentleman in the big blind to see a {7-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {J-Hearts} flop, which they both checked.

The big blind bet out 1,300 on the {K-Diamonds} turn, which Kabbaj called; they proceeded to the {7-Diamonds} river, and this time both checked.

The big blind turned over {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for the two pair on the board with an ace kicker -- but Kabbaj had him just pipped, turning over pocket {8-Spades} {8-Diamonds} to take the pot and put him back up to 28,000.

Smith Gets Backdoored

The cutoff seat raised to 800 and Justin "BoostedJ" Smith flatted on the button. The big blind then reraised to 2,600 and only Smith came along.

The flop came down {A-Spades} {7-Diamonds} {5-Spades}. The big blind took his time and then fired out 3,500. Smith called behind.

The turn brought the {A-Diamonds} and both players checked.

The river was the {5-Diamonds} and both players checked again.

The big blind showed first and revealed {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} for the nut flush. Smith showed the same hand, but a different suit with the {K-Spades} {J-Spades}. Unfortunately for him though, his opponent backed into a diamond flush and he dropped to 36,500 chips.

Peter-ing Out

Peter Jepsen has been eliminated, he had dwindled down to just 2,000 before getting back up to 22,000 - only to run {A-?} {K-?} into {A-?} {A-?} on a king-high flop.

Countries by the Numbers

With registration now officially closed, we have some interesting facts for you. A total of 478 players entered this year's event. That's 141 less than last year's field. Even with a field size smaller by approximately 23%, there are a whopping 37 countries represented from all over the globe.

The United States had the most players in the field with 55. Bunched together in the next tier are Italy with 46 and France, Germany and Spain all with 44. Rounding out the top ten countries with most entrants are the Netherlands (30), Russia (29), Finland (21), Sweden (21), and Canada (18). The United Kingdom, Denmark and Romania all had numbers in the double digits as well.

To branch things out globally, players have flown in from Venezuela, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Israel and New Zealand.
