Nelson's Columns

Nelson - has chips
Nelson - has chips
Those stacks of chips are growing, and it looks as though Lee Nelson has now snuck back the chip lead.

After betting 15,000 on the river of a {K-Hearts} {A-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} board, Nelson received first a call and then a swift muck from his opponent when Nelson showed him {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs}. With that, Nelson is up to 91,000.

Pagano Plays Well

Pagano - good player
Pagano - good player
Over on the Table Of Doom, with the board reading {7-?} {7-?} {9-?} {J-?}, Luca Pagano took down the pot with a large bet and to everyone's surprise showed a paltry {6-?} {8-?}. "It wasn't impossible you had the two jacks," mused Greg Raymer. "I thought you had nines full," piped up Mike McDonald. Everyone agreed that Pagano had played the hand very well, and he is now up to around 70,000.

Gomes Plays Possum

We just can't stay away from Table 28. It has provided some compelling poker so far today. We came by to see Alexandre Gomes involved in a pot with one player. The board showed {J-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {3-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} and Gomes check-called a bet of 3,075.

The river fell {10-Clubs}. Gomes checked again, prompting his opponent to bet 10,075. Gomes sighed and looked down at the floor, as if his opponent had made the worst possible move. Gomes counted out a call, then replaced the chips in his stack and announced that he was all in for a total of about 29,000. It was just more than his opponent.

Gomes sat back in his chair with his arms crossed over his chest. It was his opponent's turn to look down at the floor, and to grab his hair in frustration with both hands. He tanked for two minutes, virtually ensuring a fold, since tankers almost always fold. Finally he gave up the ghost, allowing Gomes to take down a pot worth about 48,000 chips.

Raymer Railer

Greg Raymer can at the moment be found giving a long, well-thought-out answer to a journalist's query of why the fields in Europe in big buy-in tournaments are tougher compared to the equivalent in the US. This means the ex-World Champ is on the rail. Ever chirpy and happy to talk, even when just eliminated, Raymer only said that he'd not run too well in the EPTs recently, elaborating:

"It's not like I never play a hand badly. But I took five bad beats before the first break. Things like my opponents, usually playing very well, play a hand really badly against me - hitting two outs on the river - that kind of thing."

Raymer's exit was a cool flopped set-over-set affair - his {10-?} {10-?} vs the {A-?} {A-?} of Luca Pagano.

Looks Like Ace Nine

There was one limp before Dario Minieri raised from the cutoff. Both the small blind and the limper called, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {A-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}

It checked back to Dario, who bet 1,700. The small blind coolly made it 3,900, the limper passed, and eventually so did Minieri. "Show the bluff!" said Minieri. His opponent flashed him the innocuous {9-Spades}. "It's not a bluff," said Minieri, undeterred, "Looks like ace-nine."

Moneymaker Down

Moneymaker and Nedellec - clearly both delighted to be here
Moneymaker and Nedellec - clearly both delighted to be here
An interesting confrontation between Chris Moneymaker and Marion Nedellec.

With the flop reading {6-Hearts} {J-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}, Moneymaker in the cutoff bet 1,800 and Nedellec on the button swiftly called.

Come the {6-Diamonds} turn, Moneymaker check-called 3,000 from Nedellec, but when he checked to her on the {8-Clubs} river and this time she made it 5,000, he opted to pass. Moneymaker drops to 22,300.
