Zaytsev Doubles to Take the Lead

An enormous hand over at Table 18.

Ilya Gorodetskiy, editor of Pokernews UK & Europe magazine, opened with a cheeky raise, holding pocket tens. Jean Goncalves called behind, but Evgeniy Zaytsev in the small blind reraised. Gorodetskiy passed his tens ("I knew I was right," he said afterwards), but Goncalves made the call, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {3-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {5-Spades}

Zaytsev bet out, and again Goncalves called. They proceeded.

Turn: {8-Spades}

There was around 30,000 in the pot by this point. Zaytsev moved all in for 25,000. Goncalves called.

Zaytsev: {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}
Goncalves: {A-Spades} {4-Spades}

River: {9-Hearts}

A very relieved Zaytsev doubled to 80,000 - as far as we can see, that's the biggest stack in the room right now. Goncalves is still in, on 15,000.

Suharto, So Good

With 13,000 in the pot by the time the turn was dealt (board: {K-Spades} {2-Spades} {7-Clubs} {A-Clubs}), Darus Suharto in the big blind and his opponent across the table both checked.

The river came down the {10-Diamonds} and Suharto now bet out 7,500. His opponent sighed. "You might have a ten," he hypothesized, "Or you're bluffing..."

He called. And was most surprised to see Suharto turn over {A-Spades} {K-Clubs}. "OK, no chance," said Mr. Opponent, with only a hint of embarrassment. He flashed the {K-Diamonds} as Suharto raked in the pot.

Minieri Up the River

Dario Minieri - Out
Dario Minieri - Out
Down under 5,000 chips, Dario Minieri has been looking like someone ran over his dog for the last few hands. He found a favorable spot after a player in middle position limped into the pot. When it came around to Minieri's small blind, he moved in for 4,650 total. A short conversation ensued between he and the limper, ending with Dario saying, "Come on, gamble." His opponent obliged, splashing in the chips and tabling {A-Clubs} {3-Clubs}. Minieri was in the lead with {7-Diamonds} {7-Spades}.

The flop paired his opponent, but it was pretty safe as it came out {8-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {K-Spades}. The {Q-Spades} on the turn didn't change anything, but the river card sure did. The {A-Hearts} peeled off, and several players at the table let out a genuine, "Awwww." Not sure why they'd want to keep the dangerous Minieri around, but it's no matter now; he's out.

Becker Decked

Boris Becker
Boris Becker
"Excuse me, do you maybe know how Mr. Boris Becker busted?" asked your blogger.

"Ja," said Peter Hedlund, "He thought it would be nice to invade France again."

Ignoring that completely, it seems Becker raised, and the gentleman in seat 1 - Farid Abidi according to the seating plan, but he'd wandered off so we couldn't confirm; either way, a Frenchman - reraised. Becker shoved for his last 6,000 or so, the Frenchman called, and they were racing.

Becker: {A-?} {K-?}
Frenchman: {J-?} {J-?}

Board: a pretty decisive {Q-?} {Q-?} {6-?} {6-?} {J-?}

Spindler: Dwindler

Spindler
Spindler
We're not sure exactly how it happened - and Spindler said he couldn't tell because there was no showdown - but young Benny "Emo Smiley" Spindler is down to 14,000 from his earlier 60,000 high point. The gent directly to his left has a suspicious-looking 75,000 stack...

Bruel Lost in Translation

Courtesy of our friends at pokernews.nl and various online translation services:

"To table at Marc needles we see Patrick Bruel limpen in the under the grant position. Marc needles, which sit directly beside him, limpt also. The button callt also the piglet blindly and then is it the turn to the small blind. The older Mr raiset to 1,850 and Bruel goes direct allin for 9,100 total. Needles and the other player folden on which the player in the small blindly direct callt. Showdown: Patrick Bruel {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} Antagonist {ash} {reporting office} The board comes {4-Clubs} {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {8-Hearts} and this way loses we the French cabaret singer."

It sounds much sexier in Dutch.

To sum up:

Bruel limped in under the gun, as did Marc Naalden to his immediate left. The button called too (no actual piglets were blinded in the making of this hand), but the small blind raised to 1,850. Bruel moved in with {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}, Naalden and the button folded, and Mr. Small Blind's pocket {A-Clubs} {A-Spades} were good on the {4-Clubs} {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {8-Hearts} board to send Bruel to the rail.

Runners On Your Marks

With registration now closed for this event, the numbers are in. A total of 367 players came out for Day 1b, quite an increase over the 219 who played yesterday's Day 1a. The two flights combined have generated a total field of 586 runners.

That number represents another increase over the first two years of this event (555 and 570 runners respectively). We're still waiting for the breakdown of the prize pool, and we'll post that as soon as it's available.
