Do the Tighten Up

Play sure has tightened up over the last half hour.

Kalle Niemi opened to 25,000 from early position, and Laurence Ryan three-bet to 78,000 next door. When it came back to Niemi, he put in the call, and the flop came down {K-Hearts} {Q-Spades} {4-Diamonds}. Both men checked, and they did the same on the {8-Hearts} turn. The {3-Clubs} hit the river and both players once again checked with confused looks on their faces. Ryan had to show first, and he tabled {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs}. Niemi flipped over {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}, his pair plenty good enough to take the pot.

Immediately after that hand, we turned around to catch a hand at the adjacent table. Marcin Horecki had made a button raise, and Gustov Ekerot called from the big blind. The board came down heart-heavy: {A-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}. Each man check-checked the flop and turn pretty quickly, but both appeared to consider firing a bullet on the river. In the end, though, they seemed to give up and check it down once again. Horecki tabled {8-Clubs} {9-Clubs}, unable to win the full pot with that hand. Fortunately for him, Ekerot tabled {K-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, and the two heartless hands split up the antes plus the small blind.

How exciting!

Pagano Drops a Quarter

Luca Pagano
Luca Pagano
We picked up the action on the turn with about 40,000 in the pot and a board showing {K-Spades} {J-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {A-Hearts}. Luca Pagano checked first to speak, and Kalle Niemi put out a bet of 35,000. After some quick tank time, Pagano made a check-raise to 110,000. As soon as the dealer had broken down the chips into easily-countable stacks, Niemi moved all in, and Pagano instantly folded with that familiar disgusted look of a stab gone wrong. His surrender puts him back down to about 300,000.

Hendriks Kisses the Sky

Peter Anne Hendriks just had a spot of extreme good fortune as he raised to 25,000 preflop and got called by Anthony Roux.

Both players checked the {8-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {K-Spades} flop and Hendriks decided it was safe to shove on the {6-Clubs} turn with {10-Spades} {10-Hearts}. It wasn't though, as Roux called with {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} for top pair and a flush draw.

But wait!

River: {10-Clubs}

To an echo from the rail of the kind of noises plumbers make when your pipes are going to cost you, Hendriks doubled to 400,00. Roux meanwhile dipped to 525,000.

Hold Everything

We didn't get much accomplished in the way of knockouts that level. We'll need to play at least one more. But not before a ten-minute break. Or possibly fifteen. Or twenty. We can't really keep up with the randomness of the break timing anymore. Don't wander far though.

Ryan Has Power Over Toby

Toby Lewis is in some trouble.

He check-called 63,000 from Laurence Ryan on a {5-Clubs} {A-Spades} {3-Diamonds} flop, and checked again on the {K-Spades} {K-Spades} urn. This time Ryan bet 124,000 and Lewis disappeared expressionlessly into the tank - before folding, leaving himself on less than 200,000.
