Welcome to EPT Snowfest!

Our intrepid team of PokerNews Live Reporters have made their way to Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the Austrian Alps for the inaugural PokerStars.net EPT Snowfest! Nestled in the Saalbach Valley about 1,000 meters above sea level, the luxurious and cozy Alpine Palace Hotel is playing host to our event this week.

The first of two Day 1 flights is scheduled for 2pm this afternoon, just about a half hour from now. There is a soft cap at 500 players for this event, and we expect to see right around that many take to the felt over the course of the next two days.

You've got a little bit of time to kill, but don't stray too far. We'll be back just before the cards go flying!

Goodbye, Cap

The registrations for Day 1a have already topped the 270-runner mark. Barring some kind of mass ski accident preventing anyone from playing tomorrow, it seems that we will be seeing the 500 ceiling on this event shattered.

Almost Time

The players are mostly in their chairs, and they're just tidying up a bit of paperwork before we can get rolling.

We expect to hear TD Thomas Kremser's voice booming through the speakers momentarily.

King of the Side Events Free to Do His Thing

"Seat open!" was the cry from the dealer - rather unexpected in the first 10 minutes of play. We scurried over to find Martin Kabrhel putting on his coat as his chips were pushed over to the gentleman on his right.

"Kings into aces," Kabrhel said with a wry smile, "Nothing special." It looked as though it had been blind on blind, to boot.

Kabrhel, who has taken down three EPT side events since November, is now at liberty to play every single one of the side events here, should he so choose.

Among the Team PokerStars Pros in the field at the start of play are Daniel Negreanu, Chad Brown, Johannes Strassmann, Thomas Bichon, Arnaud Mattern, and Alex Kravchenko.

Jesper Hougaard, Stephen Chidwick, Dara O'Kearney, and Yury Kerzhapkin are also among those here.

This Just In: Negreanu Likes Poker

A member of a European media outlet approached Daniel Negreanu in between hands.

"Why are you playing here?" he asked, probably not meaning to come across as incredulously as he did.

Negreanu was a bit taken aback, though he laughed it off. "Because I like to play poker," he answered simply enough. "I mean, why not? I play 4 or 5 EPTs a year."

Negreanu is still hovering right around his starting stack, and he'll be dealing with his fellow Team PokerStars Pro Michael Keiner until one of them (or their table) busts.

Tables Of Death

With so many big names in the field, it's no surprise that a couple of particularly terrifying tables have emerged.

One of the most terrifying so far involves Casey Kastle staring across the felt at the ever-cheerful Jesper Hougaard and the ever-intimidating Alex Kravchenko. Just like at the welcome party last night, expect fireworks...

Team PokerStars Polish Pro Marcin Horecki has been sent to the slopes during level 1.

Dominik Nitsche opened the pot with a raise from middle position and was called by three players, including Horecki from the big blind. The flop came down {6-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{10-Spades} and Horecki checked. Nitsche bet 750. The other two players folded, prompting a raise to 2,000 by Horecki.

Nitsche took a look at Horecki's stack, down to under 15,000, and raised enough to put him all in. Horecki called all in and tabled {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}, trailing Nitsche's {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. The {J-Hearts} turn and {7-Hearts} river were blanks for Horecki and he is out early in Day 1a.

Dominik Nitsche is over 45,000.
