Jacks Send Lichtenberger Packing

Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

The player under the gun limped in, and the next gentleman raised to 2,600. The action folded all the way around to the small blind where Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger paused to consider. He had 15,900 chips left in front of him, and he plunked them across the line in one neat, technicolor stack. The limper quickly ducked out of the way, but the original raiser asked for a count and called to put the young American at risk.

Showdown
Lichtenberger: {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}

There was a queen right in the door, and the full board ran out unfavorably for Chewy. It came {4-Spades} {6-Spades} {Q-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {9-Clubs}, and that's that. With a quick, "Good luck, guys," he was off to the exit.

Greenstein Is Not Asleep...Some Of The Time

It's frustrating for Michel "The Abacus" Abecassis that Team PokerStars Pro Barry Greenstein woke up enough to put most of his chips in on a {8-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} flop and the last few bits and bobs in on the {A-Clubs} turn. Abecassis had called with {6-Clubs} {5-Clubs} for the big draw against Greenstein's two pair {A-Spades} {8-Spades} and the river was a brick {J-Hearts}.

Greenstein is back to 27,000. Abecassis has well over 100,000 still.

Break it Down

We've hit the last break of the night, another 15 minutes to wander about in the rain and splash in puddles and whatnot.

Whence we return, we'll play on for another level before bagging and tagging for the night.

Level: 9

Blinds: 500/1,000

Ante: 100

Hey, Hey, Slow Down!

As expected, the pace of play has slowed down considerably here in the last half hour or so, and the big slowdown continues here in this final level of the night. The clock has been stuck displaying 173 players remaining for quite some time now, and we haven't heard those magical, "Seat open!" calls very often at all lately.

There have been a good number of short-stack double ups in the first ten minutes of this level, though, and we'd expect to see the shorties continue to push for double or nothing to end their night. When it's all said and done, we should be right around 150 players left when the bags come out. Any less than that will be a bonus.

Heitmann Sends One Home

"All in and a call, Table 1!"

See? Now we're talking. We walked over to see a middle-aged gentleman all in for 9,200 holding {9-Spades} {10-Spades}, and Team PokerStars Pro Jan Heitmann put him to the test with {A-Spades} {K-Clubs}.

"Seven-high flop," coxed the at-risk player. Sure enough, it came {7-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}, pretty much no help at all. The {5-Clubs} turn and {J-Diamonds} river filled out the board, and that was that.

Heitmann tallies the knockout, moving his stack to 81,000 in the process.

"All in and a call, Table 2!" Another shout, we're running back to the floor...

Table 3 - Stacked

Young Englishman Nicky Evans has found his table suddenly stacked with a veritable who's who of poker. To his left he has Greg Raymer, Erik Seidel, Thomas Bichon and Allen Cunningham while sitting across from him is Vanessa Rousso.

Seidel just opened to 2,500 preflop but folded when Rousso moved all-in from the big blind for about 22,000. Seidel said he had ace-jack to which Rousso responded by saying she had tens.

It's an interesting table late on with Raymer chatting to Cunningham, the latter reveal he probably wouldn't have played this event had there not been multiple events and the WSOPE also happening at the same time.

Raymer Clubs Mattern

Greg Raymer
Greg Raymer

Arnaud Mattern is like the fourth member of our blogging team sometimes, handily letting us know if we've missed any big action. Always an objective reporter, Arnaud is willing to share information even when he's just lost a pot for the chip lead, as was the case a minute ago.

He called us over to his table, and we noticed his stack was a bit lighter than we'd seen the last time. Here's the dirty. Mattern raised from the button with {J-Clubs} {6-Clubs}, and both blinds called including Raymer in the big. The flop was {9-} {7-} {4-} with two clubs, and the action checked through to the {J-Spades} turn, a good card for Mattern. The small blind led out for 4,000, and Raymer promptly raised to 15,000 with just over 30,000 behind. Mattern then moved all in, the small blind folded, and Raymer called. He showed up {K-Clubs} {10-Clubs} drawing to the flush and the double-gutter.

Sure enough, a third club landed on the river, and Raymer has found his double up. He's up around 100,000 now, dropping Mattern down to about 90,000 in the process.
