Hey, Hey, Slow Down!

As expected, the pace of play has slowed down considerably here in the last half hour or so, and the big slowdown continues here in this final level of the night. The clock has been stuck displaying 173 players remaining for quite some time now, and we haven't heard those magical, "Seat open!" calls very often at all lately.

There have been a good number of short-stack double ups in the first ten minutes of this level, though, and we'd expect to see the shorties continue to push for double or nothing to end their night. When it's all said and done, we should be right around 150 players left when the bags come out. Any less than that will be a bonus.

Level: 9

Blinds: 500/1,000

Break it Down

We've hit the last break of the night, another 15 minutes to wander about in the rain and splash in puddles and whatnot.

Whence we return, we'll play on for another level before bagging and tagging for the night.

Greenstein Is Not Asleep...Some Of The Time

It's frustrating for Michel "The Abacus" Abecassis that Team PokerStars Pro Barry Greenstein woke up enough to put most of his chips in on a {8-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} flop and the last few bits and bobs in on the {A-Clubs} turn. Abecassis had called with {6-Clubs} {5-Clubs} for the big draw against Greenstein's two pair {A-Spades} {8-Spades} and the river was a brick {J-Hearts}.

Greenstein is back to 27,000. Abecassis has well over 100,000 still.

Jacks Send Lichtenberger Packing

Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

The player under the gun limped in, and the next gentleman raised to 2,600. The action folded all the way around to the small blind where Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger paused to consider. He had 15,900 chips left in front of him, and he plunked them across the line in one neat, technicolor stack. The limper quickly ducked out of the way, but the original raiser asked for a count and called to put the young American at risk.

Showdown
Lichtenberger: {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}

There was a queen right in the door, and the full board ran out unfavorably for Chewy. It came {4-Spades} {6-Spades} {Q-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {9-Clubs}, and that's that. With a quick, "Good luck, guys," he was off to the exit.

Ve-Dead

Tommy Vedes got it in in bad shape, and failed to improve.

Vedes: {j-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Vedes' opponent: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Board: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Vedes didn't look too upset about it though, exiting with a laugh and a cheery good luck to the table.

Steicke Like Glue

Some curiousness on the turn of a {3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} board as it seemed to have checked around to Arnaud Mattern who bet 2,850. In the small blind, David Steicke shoved for 23,700. Greg Raymer in the big blind folded. Back to Mattern, who thought about it long and hard but eventually folded as well.

Said Raymer: "I couldn't call unless I knew for sure that Arnaud was folding. I mean if he'd folded out of turn I could have called."

Mattern - 140,000
Steicke - 30,000
Raymer - 55,000

The Benny No-Hill Show

Arriving on the flop of {3-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {7-Clubs}, Benny Spindler checked across to Michel Abecassis who fired out 5,200. Spindler gave the Frenchman a stare before calling, he did similarly on the {6-Hearts} turn to a 13,200 to gain a chance to see the {2-Hearts} river where he checked once more.

This time Abecassis bet 27,200 and this sent Spindler so deep into the tank I thought we'd need to send someone down in a diving suit to rescue him. But he made a call after a good five minutes, Abecassis showed {A-Clubs} {6-Clubs} for a missed flush draw but turned trips.

Abecassis now has 135,000. Spindler back down to 80,000
