Day 1b Started
Good morning and welcome back to Deauville, home of a rather good race track, some very good butter, and France's biggest poker tournament. It's still raining here, but that shouldn't bother anyone in the slightest as we're tucked up in the cosy confines of the Casino Barriere's annex and we'll soon be coming face to face with another eight levels of EPT.
Yesterday 419 players competed, meaning that we only need 350 today to improve on last year's 768-strong field. Given that Day 1b is traditionally somewhat larger than Day 1a, that shouldn't be a problem. Among those expected to take to the felt today are Team PokerStars Pros Arnaud Mattern, Liv Boeree, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom, the latter making his European debut as a Team Pro. They'll all be hoping to end the day rubbing statistical shoulders with Guillaume de la Gorce, Bruno Launais and Julien Muel who topped the chip counts at the end of play yesterday.
Play is due to start at noon and even taking into account the traditional Day 1 delays, we should be getting this familiar party started within an hour or so. Stay tuned to PokerNews and we'll bring you all the action as it happens.
It feels a little like an airport as players are taking their seats and announcements are being made in a variety of languages. Ladies and gentlemen, please make yourselves comfortable and there will be no need of the emergency exits today; this EPT Day 1b will shortly be departing.
Level: 1
Blinds: 50/100

Getting aces in your first hand in an EPT Main Event is the stuff of dreams, but it can also turn into a bit of a nightmare, just ask Team Pokerstars Pro Pieter de Korver.
De Korver raised to 250 and one person called in the shape of Kroll Raphael who was sat on the Button. Both blinds folded and de Korver and Raphael were going to share a flop. The flop was and de Korver, looking decadent in all white, made a bet of 300. Raphael made a raise making it 1,000 in total and de Korver called.
The turn was the , filling any potential flush-draw, and de Korver checked and Raphael continued to apply the pressure when he bet 1,500 and again de Korver called.
The river then paired the board when the was laid on its back. de Korver bet 2,075 and Raphael just stared at de Korver. Eventually Raphael bet 8,250 and this was enough to give de Korver something to start thinking about.
"First hand, really?" Said de Korver.
"I started with aces and with the ace of spades as well." Said de Korver.
After a long while somebody called the clock but it wasn't necessary.
"I just want to see your hand." Said de Korver before paying his dues.
Raphael turned over for a full-house and de Korver was immediately on the back foot. But the 2009 EPT Grand Final Winner has come back from these type of situations before.
If you speak Dutch and ever find yourself perusing our sister site pokernews.nl, or even if you never stray from pokernews.com but your eye occasionally wanders to the shoutbox, you will be familiar with the work of Frank "webjoker" Op de Woerd. Veteran of a million (approximately) EPTs but always from the safety of the press room, Mr. Op de Woerd is right this minute taking his first ever shot at playing one of these things.
So far, it's been going rather well. We found Op de Woerd betting an at-this-stage-rather-hefty 2,100 on the river of a board. His opponent wrung his hands but made the call anyway, turning over for a rivered set, but Op de Woerd flipped for the flush and won the pot. The dealer attempted to ship said pot to the wrong player, but was soon put right and Op de Woerd is up to 36,000.
Daniel Negreanu has been having a rather good run of late - in the last few months he's finished in fourth place at EPT Vienna, ninth place at APPT Sydney and second at the PCA Super High Roller - but he's already run into some rather serious problems here in Deauville. We didn't see it ourselves, but we understand that his flopped two pair was beaten by the river and he's down to around 10,000.
Table five is looking pretty formidable. 2010 EPT Barcelona winner Kent Lundmark is sat in seat 4, Team Pokerstars Pro Daniel Negreanu is sat in seat 6 and Team Pokerstars Pro Juan Manuel Pastor is sat in seat 8. Here is some action from that table.
A player opened up with a raise of 250 from early position and three players called the bet including Negreanu. The flop was a paired and the initial raise made a bet of 500 and only Negreanu called.
The turn was the and the initial raiser checked before Negreanu bet 1,200 and the initial raiser called. The river was the and both players checked and the initial raiser took down the pot.
Initial Raiser:
Daniel Negreanu:
Then Negreanu min-raised to 200 from early position and only Kent Lundmark called in the big blind. The flop was and Lundmark check-called a 325 bet by Negreanu. The turn was a second ace in the form of the ace of hearts and both players checked. The river was the and Lundmark checked for a third time. Negreanu, counted out a bet of 1,525 and Lundmark called. Negreanu tabled for a rivered full-house and Lundmark mucked his hand.
Negreanu is now back up to 12,000 after having his stack decimated earlier on in the day.
