Day 3 Started
Good morning and welcome back to the Spielbank Berlin where things are getting very serious indeed.
Last night we saw a double elimination on the bubble to leave us with one player, Karl Heinz Klose, claiming 120th place money, meaning that we are down to 119 as we head into the day.
The man to beat right now is dapper Frenchman Fabrice Soulier. A huge double up with a turned Broadway straight against online qualifier Jason Helder late yesterday propelled him to the chip lead, and he only increased it as the day edged towards a close - he's now at 1,079,400, with the next biggest stack (belonging to Alessandro Laubinger) a comparatively piddling 742,400.
Still, it's only Day 3 and it is really anyone's game yet. Among the other hopefuls in this remarkably stacked field are Peter Eastgate, Roberto Romanello, Thomas Bichon, Vladimir Geshkenbein and Team PokerStars Pros Fatima Moreira de Melo, Henrique Pinho, Sebastian Ruthenberg, George Danzer and Joep van den Bijgaart. This should be very interesting.
Play is due to start at noon, in around three quarters of an hour. Don't go anywhere.
Today's first feature table is table 2, featuring Fabrice Soulier, Giuseppe Pantaleo, Anatoliy Anikev, Ben Roberts, Mathew Frankland, Mikhail Lakhitov Lucas Meyer and Gerardo Muro.
Level: 15
Blinds: 2,000/4,000
Ante: 400
One of the very first exits today is Torsten Otto, pushing from middle position and finding EPT Copenhagen runner-up Per Linde moving all-in behind him to cover.
Otto:
Linde:
The board came and the Swede is now up to 190,000.
Sascha Sirtl doubled up with a river straight, watching his look like it was going to fall to Alexander Mette's on a flop. His relief was evident in his exhaled 'Yeeeessss!' as the turn and river fell . He now has 100,000 while Mette is on 240,000.
At the same time, Nima Ahrary, one of the early Day 2 chip leaders, gave Robert Schulz a spin preflop with , failing to bust the short stack who held .
We were missing one Mr. Vladimir Geshkenbein and his toy monkey at the start of play, but they have now arrived to take their shot at a second EPT title.
Across the room, though, we are still missing Mr. Johan van Til. Van Til's overnight chip count was 91,500 - less than half the average. If he doesn't get here soon, "busto_soon" could well be busto soon. If anyone sees him, please direct him to Table 25.
An ace from space saved Daniel-Gai Pidun when a Nima Ahrary raise found both blinds getting it in preflop over the top. Hans Vogl was the small blind, and therefore first to shove, and Pidun called all-in for 65,000. Ahrary covered both of them by a ton of chips and called.
Ahrary:
Vogl:
Pidun:
"Ass!" wished Pidun. His wish was immediately granted on a flop.
"No queen! No nine!"
Turn:
"No queen! No nine! No spade!"
River:
So Vogl loses the side pot and his tournament life, collecting €7,500
Level: 16
Blinds: 2,500/5,000
Ante: 500
Perilously short Timo Pfützenreuter moved all-in for a micro raise over the top of chancer Michal Kusak preflop, who made the call (less than 27k total).
"You're so gross!" grinned Ben Wilinofsky as Kusak showed and Pfützenreuter a hilariously ahead .
The flop:
The turn: This brought a mini fistpump from the short stack.
The river:
"How many seconds did it take you after you made a full house to realise you were still sweating the river?" asked Wilinofsky.
"I hate you," replied Pfützenreuter, grinning and stacking his 58,000 chips.
