Dan Smith Wins €50,000 Super High Roller (€962,925)!

Champion Dan Smith!

The 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller has concluded with Dan Smith capturing the €962,925 first-place prize, a Shamballa Bracelet and the first major EPT title of Season 9.

Smith has been on a tear in 2012, starting back in January at the Aussie Millions where he won the $100,000 Challenge for A$1,012,000. Prior to that result, Smith had just $628,939 in live tournament earnings, but that was up to over $2.8 million headed into this final table.

The day began with the final table skewed as the top three players — Smith (5,108,000), Mike “Timex” McDonald (4,650,000) and JC Alvarado (3,116,000) — held 80% of the chips in play. As such, five of the short stacks, all below 700,000, were working with around 20 big blind stacks in Level 16 (15,000/30,000/4,000). Each were anxious to capture a larger chunk of the €3,072,960 prize pool, which was created after 55 players entered the event and accounted for nine rebuys. Interestingly, none of the players that rebought made the final table.

Despite the short stacks, it took a whole level before the first elimination occurred, which happened when Smith's {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts} outdrew the {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} of Jim McCrink. Not long after, Talal Shakerchi was eliminated in seventh place for €138,300 after failing to hit an open-ended straight draw against the top pair of Ilari Sahamies, and then Poker Hall of Famer and consistent high roller Erik Seidel fell to the Finn in sixth place. Soon after, McDonald and Alvarado played a massive pot that resulted in the latter doubling, and the former ended up busting the very next hand when his {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades} ran into Smith’s {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}.

A few hands later, it was Smith and Sahamies clashing after Smith had opened and Sahamies three-bet. Smith then moved all in and Sahamies made the call, creating a considerable pot. This time it was Smith who held the {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, but he was dominated by the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} of Sahamies.

Smith had been running well since the start of Day 2, and that momentum carried over to the final table as the flop came down {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Neither the {6-Diamonds} turn nor {4-Diamonds} river helped Sahamies, and he was awarded a consolation prize of fourth-place money worth €291,900.

Mike Watson began three-handed play as the short stack and failed to mount a comeback, finishing in third place for €399,500. That left Smith holding a five-to-three chip lead going into heads-up play, but he and Alvarado still decided to do a deal — the former would take home €862,925, the latter €788,675, leaving €100,000 and the Shamballa bracelet up for grabs.

Alvarado managed to pull into the chip lead, but then a big hand saw Smith snatch it back. From there, Smith whittled down his opponent and pulled out to a six-to-one chip lead before finishing the job. On the final hand, Alvarado got it in good with the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}, but couldn't hold down the fort against Smith's {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. Once again, Smith's run good continued and this time it had won him the tournament.

Smith’s latest EPT win comes on the heels of winning three €5,000 side events at the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final back in May (€5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Max Turbo for €152,980; €5,000 No-Limit Hold'em for €250,500; and €5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Max for €118,000), and five cashes at this year’s World Series of Poker, including a big score in another $5,000 event where he took third in Event 50: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em for $368,943. Needless to say, 2012 has become the “Year of the Nub.”

Congratulations to Dan Smith on winning the EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller. While action in this event has concluded, the Main Event is in full swing. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is covering that event, and will also be reporting from the €10,000 High Roller beginning on August 23.

JC Alvarado Eliminated in 2nd Place (€788,675)

JC Alvarado - 2nd Place
JC Alvarado - 2nd Place

From the button, JC Alvarado raised and then Dan Smith reraised all in from the big blind. Alvarado quickly called holding the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. Smith held the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} and would need to get lucky if he wanted to end it here.

The flop sums up just what kind of tournament it's been for Smith, coming down {A-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} to give him the lead. Heck, it's summed up his entire year with the way he's been winning everything he touches.

After the flop put him in front, it was just a matter of the {6-Diamonds} on the turn and {3-Clubs} on the river before the deal was signed, sealed and delivered. Alvarado finished the hand second best and the tournament runner-up, taking home €788,675. That is by far the largest score of Alvarado's career, but still leaves a bitter taste in his mouth as any second-place finish will do.

Mike Watson Eliminated in 3rd Place (€399,500)

Mike Watson - 3rd Place

Short-stacked Mike Watson raised to 160,000 from the button and inspired Dan Smith to fold the small blind. JC Alvarado hesitated for a moment in the big before moving all in, and Watson called off.

Showdown
Watson: {A-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Alvarado: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

Watson got it in good with ace high, but the {3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} spelled disaster as Alvarado paired his king. The {5-Hearts} turn left Watson in need of an ace on the river, but it wasn't in the cards as the harmless {7-Spades} rolled off.

Ilari Sahamies Eliminated in 4th Place (€291,900)

Dan Smith raised from the button and Ilari Sahamies reraised from the small blind. Smith then moved all in and Sahamies made the call. Smith held the {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, but was dominated by the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} for Sahamies.

The flop came down {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Smith stormed to the lead. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and river the {4-Diamonds}. Sahamies was eliminated and took home fourth-place money worth €291,900.

Below are the chip counts following Sahamies' bust out and as you can see, Smith has a very big lead on the other two with Mike Watson the short stack.

Mike McDonald Eliminated in 5th Place (€215,100)

Mike McDonald - 5th Place
Mike McDonald - 5th Place

In the very next hand after doubling JC Alvarado, Mike "Timex" McDonald raised from the cutoff only to have Dan Smith three-bet to 295,000 from the small blind. After the big got out of the way, McDonald moved all in and Smith made a quick call.

Showdown
McDonald: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Smith: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

McDonald was left shaking his head as Smith held the better kicker with his ace. The {3-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop was more bad news for McDonald as Smith picked up a flush draw, but the {K-Hearts} turn did give him some hope to a Broadway straight. Unfortunately for him, the {Q-Diamonds} river would not complete it. With that, McDonald exited in fifth place for €215,100 while Smith raked in the pot and now sits on nearly half the chips in play.

After JC Alvarado limped in from the cutoff seat, Mike McDonald raised from the button. Action folded back to Alvarado and he put in a reraise. McDonald moved all in and Alvarado quickly called.

Alvarado held the {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and McDonald the {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}. The flop, turn and river ran out {9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Alvarado doubled up.

Erik Seidel Eliminated in 6th Place (€153,600)

Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

A short-stacked Erik Seidel was all in preflop with {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and at risk against the {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} of Ilari "Ilari FIN" Sahamies. It was a bad spot for the Poker Hall of Famer, and the {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop didn't help his cause.

The {3-Clubs} turn gave him some chop options to a wheel, but it also gave Sahamies a flush draw, meaning the {4-Clubs} and {10-Clubs} would be useless. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {K-Spades}. Seidel, always gracious in defeat, had a big smile on his face as he shook hands with the table and exited in sixth place.

Talal Shakerchi Eliminated in 7th Place (€138,300)

Talal Shakerchi
Talal Shakerchi

On a flop of {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}, Ilari Sahamies checked from the big blind and opened the door for Talal Shakerchi to bet 155,000 from the under-the-gun position. Sahamies responded with a check-raise to 425,000, and Shakerchi wasted little time in moving all in for 1.13 million.

Sahamies, who began the hand with just a bit more than his opponent, asked for a count and thought for a solid minute before making the call.

Showdown
Shakerchi: {9-Spades}{10-Spades}
Sahamies: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

Shakerchi was a 2-1 dog with his open-ended straight draw, which wouldn't come in as both the {7-Spades} turn and {10-Hearts} river blanked. With that, Shakerchi exited in seventh place for €138,300, while Sahamies received a virtual double.

Jim McCrink Eliminated in 8th Place (€122,960)

Jim McCrink
Jim McCrink

Action folded around to Dan Smith in the small blind and he eyed up Jim McCrink's stack in the big. Eventually Smith tossed out a handful of black T100,00 chips and put the pressure on his opponent. McCrink squeezed out his cards, stacked his chips, and then slid them into the pot.

Showdown
McCrink: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Smith: {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

McCrink woke up with a decent pair and was out in front, but the {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop made things interesting as it gave Smith the nut-flush draw. The anticipation was intense around the Main Stage as the dealer burned and turned the {4-Hearts}. Smith hit his flush to leave his opponent drawing dead.

After the {K-Diamonds} was put out on the rvier for good measure, McCrink shook hands with Smith and took his leave in eighth place, good for €122,960.
