Tompkins Leads the Final 24

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Tompkins
Jason Tompkins

The EPT9 Sanremo continued on Tuesday with Day 4 action from the Casino Sanremo. The remaining 66 players from a 797-player field returned to battle down to the final 24. It took a little over five levels of play, but eventually that number was reached with Jason Tompkins and his stack of 2,423,000 leading the way.

Tompkins got most of those chips in Level 22 when he opened from the cut-off and called when Amerigo Santoro three-bet to 74,000 from the small blind. The flop came down {8-}{5-}{4-} and Tompkins called a continuation-bet, which brought about the {3-} turn.

When faced with a 120,000 bet, Tompkins raised to 285,000 and then snap-called all in when Santoro shoved. Tompkins opened pocket eights for a set but was behind the wheel of Santoro, who held {a-}{2-}. The river came to the Irishman's rescue as it came {3-} to pair the board and give him the 2.5 million pot.

Other notables that managed to make it through to Day 5 included Thomas Gabriel, Artem Litvinov, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Michael Benvenuti, Matt Salsberg, Micah Raskin, Jason Lavallee, Ludovic Lacay and the Day 3 and 4 chip leader, Inge Forsmo.

Not everyone was so lucky on Day 4, as Roberto Romanello (65th-€12,000), David Vamplew (62nd-€12,000), Mike Watson (59th-€12,000), Alex Roumeliotis (54th-€14,000), Day 1a chip leader Erion Islamay (52nd-€14,000) and Morten Mortensen (51st-€14,000).

Not long after, Angelo Recchia opened for 32,000 from the hijack and was met with a three-bet to 75,000 from Justin Bonomo on the button. Both blinds cleared out, Recchia four-bet to 140,000, and Bonomo made the call. When the {10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{Q-Hearts} appeared on the flop, Recchia led out for a mediocre 65,000, and after thinking for a bit, Bonomo moved all in for 220,000. Recchia made a quick call and the cards were turned up.

Showdown
Bonomo: {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Recchia: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Recchia held an over pair while Bonomo was drawing to a double-gutted straight draw. Unfortunately for the American, neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {8-Diamonds} river would complete it and his Main Event run came to an end in 36th place for €16,000. From there, Atanas Kavrakov (33rd-€16,000), Sofia Lovgren (30th-€19,000), and Isaac Haxton (26th-€19,000) all hit the rail before play came to end an for the night.

Day 5 action is set to kick off at 14:00 CET on Wednesday as the final 24 players will battle down to the final table of eight. Be sure to stay tuned for all of the action Sanremo right here on PokerNews

Who's the Daddy? Tompkins Is

Jason Tompkins is a very happy boy as his Tweet below shows.

We had a little chat with him and got most of the details.

He opened from the cut-off and called when Amerigo Santoro three-bet to 74,000 from the small blind. The flop came down {8-}{5-}{4-} and Tompkins called a c-bet to head to the {3-} turn.

When faced with a 120,000 bet he raised to 285,000 and snap-called all in when Santoro shoved. He opened pocket eights for a set but was behind the wheel of Santoro who held {a-}{2-}. The river came to the Irishman's rescue as it came {3-} to pair the board.

Deeb Done and Dusted

Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Day 4 wasn't kind to Shaun Deeb; in fact, all he seemed to do was dwindle over the first two levels.

In a hand at the tail end of Level 20, Deeb moved all in from middle position for 162,000 and received a call from Artem Metalidi in the small blind.

Showdown
Deeb: {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Metalidi: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}

"I got it in with my favorite hand," Deeb said before seeing the flop come down {3-Spades}{6-Clubs}{A-Spades}, which provide him with any help. The {A-Clubs} turn was just as useless, and Deeb needed either a king or queen on the river to stay alive. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {2-Hearts}. With that, Deeb was eliminated from the tournament, and we're guessing he'll probably jump into the €10,000 High Roller event that just started.

Salsberg Takes Chip Lead with Straight

Matt Salsberg
Matt Salsberg

Matt Salsberg raised to 21,000 from under the gun, and Justin Bonomo called from the big blind to see the flop come down {K-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. After Bonomo checked, Salsberg fired 20,000. Bonomo called.

The turn was the {8-Clubs}, and Bonomo checked again. This time, Salsberg bet 45,000, and Bonomo check-raised to 150,000. Salsberg tanked, then called.

The river was the {9-Clubs} and completed a backdoor flush draw. Bonomo slid out 250,000, and Salsberg snap-called, to which Bonomo showed {K-}{8-} for two pair. Salsberg tabled the {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts} for a straight, and he won the pot.

Moschitta Spikes the River for Big Triple

Luca Moschitta
Luca Moschitta

We just saw a huge hand take place that inspired a celebration so boisterous that the entire room, including the €2,000 side event, grew eerily quiet.

It began when Eric Nhouyvanisvong opened for 22,000 and received a call from Micah Raskin in the cutoff. Luca Moschitto of PokerStars Team Online then moved all in from the small blind for 296,000. Nhouyvanisvong made the call, and then Raskin opted to move all in himself for 499,000 total. Nhouyvanisvong thought long and hard before making the call.

Showdown
Nhouyvanisvong: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Raskin: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Moschitta: {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Both Nhouyvanisvong and Moschitta seemed demoralized when they saw Raskin's red aces, but the {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop made things interesting as it gave the Italian a flush draw.

"Heart, heart," Moschitta's girlfriend, Sofia Lovgren, yelled from one table over.

"Black," Raskin countered. The dealer obliged with the {7-Clubs} on the turn. "Black," Raskin said again knowing he was just one card away from the chip lead. This time the dealer did not listen and put down the {2-Hearts}. Muschitta hit his cards and celebrated at the top of his lungs, a celebration that caught the attention of everyone in the room.

Raskin was left shaking his head, though he did collect the side pot, while Nhouyvanisvong was crippled down to just 200,000.

Vamplew Busts In Monster Pot

David Vamplew on day 3
David Vamplew on day 3

The bad day for former British EPT winners has continued with David Vamplew's exit. He fell to Jason Tompkins in a huge flip.

The Irishman opened to 17,000 from under the gun before Vamplew three-bet to 40,000 from the button. The blinds folded but Tompkins had other thoughts and four-bet to 116,000. Vamplew looked a little pained, his neck flushed; maybe with the anticipation of what was about to happen. He shoved for 463,000 and was called by Tompkins after he checked his cards one last time.

Tompkins: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Vamplew: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

The board ran {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} to make Tompkins a flush.

Romanello's Day is Done

Roberto Romanello on Day 3.
Roberto Romanello on Day 3.

We just lost one of the more recognizable names in the field just now as Imed Mahmoud sent Roberto Romanello to the rail.

It happened when action folded around to Romanello in the cutoff and he moved all in. Imed Mahmoud made the call from the small blind, and after the big folded, Romanello said, "I'm not slow rolling, I only looked at one." He then flashed the {A-Diamonds} and indicated he wanted Mahmoud to show. The latter was having none of it and refused to show his hand.

After some prompting from the floor, Romanello squeezed out his other card, the {8-Clubs}, and then Mahmoud tabled {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. It was a flip.

The {K-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop wasn't particularly interesting, and neither was the {5-Spades} turn as no player held a spade. The dealer burned one final time and put down the {9-Spades}, the last card Romanello would see in the EPT9 Sanremo Main Event.

Day 4 Begins; Inge Forsmo Maintains Lead

Inge Forsmo On Top
Inge Forsmo On Top

We're back for Day 4 of the EPT Sanremo Main Event! Yesterday's play saw the returning players play four 90-minute levels during which the bubble was popped and the field was reduced to merely 66 returning players. Inge Forsmo, who held the chip lead going into Day 3, is once again atop the leader board going into Day 4.

Yesterday's play saw a slew of notable faces hit the rail before making the money. Jude Ainsworth, Andre Akkari, Pius Heinz, Sam Trickett, Jose "Nacho" Barbero, Kyle Cheong, and Bryan Paris were among those players.

While those players were unable to make the money, others thrived as the tournament progressed. Returning big stacks are Angelo Recchia (851,000), Carmelo Vasta (844,000), Laurent Polito (717,000), David Vamplew (547,000), Alex Roumeliotis (505,000) and Isaac Haxton (488,000). Others still in contention going into Day 4 include Matt Salsberg, Shaun Deeb, Roberto Romanello, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Justin Bonomo.

Cards will be in the air soon and we'll be on hand to provide you with all of the latest updates! The plan is to play down to the top 24 but the field may play on if that number is reached quickly. Be sure to stay tuned for all of the action from the felt here on PokerNews
