Day 2 Ends with Mizzi in the Lead

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Sorel Mizzi
Sorel Mizzi

Day 2 of the €10,000 High Roller at EPT Prague is complete, and the overnight chip leader is Sorel Mizzi, who bagged 1.192 million. The only other player with a million chips is Philippe Ktorza (1.094 million).

Marvin Rettenmaier started Day 2 of the €10,000 High Roller with a bang, doubling through Rudolf Babayan. There was a raise and a call before Rettenmaier three-bet out of the big blind, and Babayan, the original raiser, moved all in. Rettenmaier quickly called with {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}, and Babayan showed {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. The board ran out {j-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and Rettenmaier doubled to more than average.

The next player to receive a massive double up was Mizzi. He played a hand with Anatoly Gurtovoy, in which Gurtovoy six-bet preflop with {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Mizzi just called with ace-king, and got the remainder of his stack in the middle on a seven-high flop. Gurtovoy called, the ace-king held, and Mizzi doubled.

Gurtovoy then busted a few hands later, when he jammed for 115,900 on a flop of {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{9-Clubs}. Andrey Gully, who had led out for 32,200, tank-called with {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Gurtovoy tabled {a-Spades}{5-Spades}. The turn and river bricked {9-Diamonds}, {7-Diamonds} respectively, and Gurtovoy was eliminated.

Play slowed considerably as we neared the money bubble, but Olivier Busquet eventually burst it. After doubling Aubin Cazals with a dominating hand preflop – Cazals spiked a straight on the river – Busquet shoved from the small blind. Rettenmaier looked him up with {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, which was ahead of the {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} of Busquet. The board ran out {6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, and Busquet was eliminated.

Katchalov was the first player to bust in the money, and it was an absolute cooler. Katchalov five-bet shoved with {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} only to be called by the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades} of Mizzi. The board ran out {3-Spades}{9-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, and Katchalov was eliminated in 12th place.

The next two players to bow out were Gurgen Melkonyan and Morten Klein, and suddenly we were at an unofficial final table. Most of the hands were quite slow, but on one of the final hands of the evening, Ktorza cold-four-bet shoved for 522,000 from the big blind. Mercier, the four-bettor, snap called with {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}, which crushed Ktorza’s {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. The board ran out {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, and Mercier was crippled down to under 200,000 chips.

Mercier doubled in a subsequent hand, but still only bagged 444,000 chips.

Play will resume on Sunday at 12:00 CEST, and finish when a winner is crowned. Join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team then.

Gurgen Melkonyan Eliminated in 11th Place (€25,000)

Gurgen Melkonyan
Gurgen Melkonyan

Action folded to a short-stacked Gurgen Melkonyan in the cutoff and he mvoed all in for 244,000. Marvin Rettenmaier was next to act and isolated from the button by moving all in over the top. Both blinds folded and Melkonyan discovered the bad news.

Showdown
Melkonyan: {A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Rettenmaier: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

Melkonyan's kicker had him in bad shape, and the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop made it even worse as Rettenmaier paired up. The {5-Clubs} turn gave Melkonyan some slim hope to a wheel, but the {5-Diamonds} river would not complete it. With that, Melkonyan exited the tournament floor in 11th place.

Busquet is the Bubble Boy

Busquet after bubbling
Busquet after bubbling

Aubin Cazals open-shoved on the button for his last 96,000, and Olivier Busquet called in the big blind. After Table 1 was finished with their hand, the cards were shown down.

Cazals: {a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Busquet: {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}

The {j-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} gave Cazals a gutshot straight draw, but the {7-Clubs} bricked on the turn. Only a five or a three would save Cazals, and to the shock of everyone, the {5-Diamonds} spiked on the felt to give him the wheel.

Cazals doubled to around 200,000 chips, while Busquet was left with just 110,000 or so.

On the very next hand, Busquet shoved from the small blind. Marvin Retteinmaier tank-called from the big blind.

Busquet: {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Rettenmaier: {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, and Busquet was eliminated.

The remaining 12 players will each earn a minimum of €25,000.

"Oh, Hey!"

Jason Mercier (Day 2) - "Oh, Hey!"
Jason Mercier (Day 2) - "Oh, Hey!"

Sorel Mizzi opened to 20,000 from early position, and the action folded to Jason Mercier in the small blind. Thinking he was the first to open the pot, Mercier grabbed 24,000 and tossed it in front of him. Andrey Gulyy, who was in the big blind, pointed to Mizzi's raise and mucked his hand.

"Oh," Mercier said surprised. "Hey!"

The two shared a laugh, and because Mercier's action was a call, the dealer fanned {2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}. The rest of the hand was played out in utter silence.

Mercier tapped the felt, and Mizzi continued for 16,000. Mercier looked down at his chips, assembled a handful, and check-raised to 49,000. Mizzi thought for less than 30 seconds, and called.

The turn was the {4-Clubs}, and Mercier opted to lead out for 84,000. Mizzi tank-called.

The river was the {k-Hearts}, and Mercier grabbed all of the red T25,000 chips sitting on top of his stack. He added a half dozen blue T5,000 chips, then tossed 223,000 forward. Mizzi asked for the amount, studied the board, studied Mercier, then folded.

"Phhhhhhhhhhhhhew," Mercier blurted.

He wasn't kidding either. After being egged on by his tablemates - especially Mizzi - Mercier showed the bluff: {j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.
