Prior to Season 10 of the EPT kicking off in Barcelona, the Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT) was in town as part of the stop’s poker festival. The ESPT €1,000 Main Event ended up setting records after attracting an astounding 1,798 player – making it the biggest 1K event ever held outside Las Vegas.

The field was littered with notables, but only a few managed to make it through to the final table including British PokerStars qualifier Paul Nunes, who held a massive chip lead with 14,475,000 (more than twice as much as his next closest competitor); and Brazil’s Marcelo Fonseca, an LAPT Uruguay champion who was the Day 2 chip leader.

Both of those players made it to four-handed play, which saw Nunes lock up the biggest guaranteed payday.

"Four-handed. I'd just sucked out and knocked out the short stack out in fifth so had the most amount of chips... I felt I was the better player left but reduced variance and the deal was fairly good, I think," Nunes told the PokerStars Blog.

With a deal in place, the four players battled it out for the title. Fonseca was the first to drop from the foursome, taking home €121,000, and then Germany’s Alin Sameeian followed him out the door in third place for €158,457.

That set up a heads-up battle between Nunes, who placed third in the 2012 World Series of Poker Event #41 $3,000 No Limit Hold’em for $290,407, and Germany’s Jahn Soenke, who had begun the day third in chips. The latter eventually walked away with the title and €169,136, but Nunes ended up the big winner with €204,589 in prize money.

Katchalov Out

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov has just been eliminated in a three-way all-in clash of premium hands. Katchalov had pocket kings up against the pocket aces for Max Greenwood and the ace-king of Dainius Ulke. The action was raised by Greenwood to open the pot from early position, a shove from the short-stacked Katchalov in the small blind, and isolation raise from Ulke in the big blind, then a reshove from Greenwood and a call from Ulke.

Greenwood's aces held up, and he won the massive pot to move to 160,000 in chips. Ulke was knocked back to about 30,000, and Katchalov was eliminated.

Action at Table 55: Moreno Thrives, Moreira De Melo Eliminated

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Fatima de Melo - Eliminated
Fatima de Melo - Eliminated

We arrived at Table 55 to catch two hands that were filled with action. In the first, we found Jack Salter raise from the hijack and Andrew Moreno call from the cutoff. Saar Wilf called as well from the big blind and the trio took in a flop.

The dealer fanned {5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs} on the felt and Wilf checked. Salter tossed out a continuation of 4,100 and Moreno waited a moment before bumping the action up to 10,100. Wilf let it go and Salter flat called. The two saw the {10-Diamonds} fall on fourth street where they both checked their options. The {J-Diamonds} finished off the board and Salter checked again. Moreno fired one last bet of 13,000 and Salter let it go, allowing Moreno to drag in the pot and bring his stack to around 95,000.

The very next hand, Salter was able to win some of his money back when he called the preflop all in of PokerStars Team SportStar member Fatima Moreira De Melo. De Melo held {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and was racing with Salter's {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. A runout of {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{J-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades} ensured that de Melo would be sent to the rail. Salter picked up the pot and brought his stack to around 90,000.

Duhamel's Day is Done

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Team PokerStars Pro and 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel got the last of his chips in holding the {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} only to be called by Timofey Kuznetsov, who had him dominated with the {a-Spades}{k-Spades}.

The {j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{j-Clubs} flop didn't give Duhamel much hope, other than to provide runner-runner and chop options, but neither the {5-Hearts} turn nor {3-Clubs} river saw them come to fruition. With that, Duhamel became one of the early Day 2 eliminations.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boat

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Cristofero Palermo from Italy was all in for his last 19,100 on a board of {j-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. He got the call from his opponent Berthold Winz from Germany. Palermo’s {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} had made a full house on the river, but the table gasped when Winz turned over his {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} for the better boat. Palermo took it in good grace as he made an early unlucky exit.

Two for Kim

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

From the cutoff seat, Samuel Rodriguez raised to 1,700. Brian Kim reraised from the button to 5,200, and action folded through the blinds back to Rodriguez. He folded and showed the {A-Clubs}.

On the next hand, action folded to Kim in the cutoff seat, and he raised to 1,800. Portugal's Abilio Ribeiro called from the big blind, and the flop came down {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. After Ribeiro checked, Kim fired 2,200. Ribeiro folded, and Kim won the pot.
