Tom "hitthehole" Middleton Leads Final 24; Alekberovas Eyes Back-to-Back Final Tables

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Tom Middleton

The European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event continued on Thursday as the final 79 players from a 1,234-player field returned for five more 90-minute levels. At the end of that time, just 24 players remained with Tom “hitthehole” Middleton leading the way for the second day in a row.

Last year’s EPT Barcelona Main Event champ, Mikalai Pobal, was looking to defend his title, but he faced an uphill battle as the third shortest stack at the start of play. Indeed, any hope of a repeat ended straightaway when Pobal became the first elimination of the day.

It happened when Sergei Chantcev opened for 2,000 and got a call from Glib Kovtunov. Pobal then moved all in from the big blind for his last 71,000. Chantcev folded after some thought and then Kovtunov made the call. Pobal flipped over the {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and was racing against the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} of Kovtunov. The race was over on the flop however when it came down {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{9-Spades}. Chantcey flopped quads, which meant both the {6-Clubs} turn and {10-Spades} river were irrelevant.

Meanwhile, WSOP Octo-Niner Russell Thomas was eliminated on the second hand of the day in 78th place. The elimination continued to mount throughout the day and included Henri Benoni (77th - €12,700), Sebastian von Toperczer (75ht - €12,700), Albert Daher (72nd - €12,700) and Season 7 EPT Barcelona champ Kent Lundmark (64th - €14,960).

Lundmark fell in Level 21 (6,000/12,000/2,000) when he and Pasi Sormunen, who was on the button, saw a flop of {10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Lundmark checked from the cutoff and Sormunen went for a bet of 25,000. Lundmark then check-raised 66,000, Sormunen shoved and Lundmark, who had the {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, snap-called. Unfortunately for him, he had run into the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} set of Sormunen. The final two cards were {j-Hearts} {q-Hearts} and Lundmark was out.

As the day wore on, he was joined on the rail by the likes of Ryan Spittles (60th - €14,960), Sean Wilson (55th - €18,200), Dermot Blain (52nd - €18,200), Douglas Souza (50th - €18,200), Mike Watson (47th - €18,200) and Dmitar Danchev (44th - €18,200).

When Danchev, who won the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event back in January for $1,859,000 and was the last former EPT champ in the field, was eliminated, it ensured the streak of not having a two-time EPT winner would continue further into Season 10.

Headed into the penultimate day, just two players are left in the Skrill Last Longer competition – Middleton and Bulgarian player Valentino Konakchiev. Whichever player lasts longer in the tournament will received their €5,300 buy-in back courtesy of Skrill, the official payment provider sponsor of EPT Season 10.

Others who survived the day were last year's fourth-place finisher Anaras Alekberovas (2,638,000), Kimmo Kurko (2,427,000), Eduard Bhaggoe (1,637,000), Rens Feensta (1,255,000), Pasi Sormunen (703,000) and Julian Thomas (230,000).

Day 5 will kick off Friday at 12 p.m. CET at the Casino Barcelona as the final 24 look to play down to the final table of eight. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews' live coverage as we bring you all the action and eliminations from the tournament floor.

Staszko Falls in 25th to Bring an End to Day 4

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Martin Staszko
Martin Staszko

With just two minutes left in the level, 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event runner up Martin Staszko was eliminated in 25th place to bring about an end of Day 4.

It happened when action folded to Niall Farrell in the small blind and he put in a raise. Staszko responded by moving all in from the big for approximately 375,000 and Farrell snap-called.

Farrell: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Staszko: {k-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Staszko knew he was in trouble even before the cards were turned up. Indeed, the PokerNews Odds Calculator gave him just a 23.70% chance of surviving the hand while Farrell would win 75.09% of the time.

The {9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop dropped Staszko's chances to 16.97%, and the {8-Hearts} turn knocked it down even further to 6.82%. Staszko needed a seven on the river to stay alive, but it wasn't in the cards as the useless {2-Diamonds} peeled off.

With Staszko's elimination, just 24 players remain. Play has been halted for the evening. Stay tuned for chip counts, the three-table redraw and a full recap of the day's action.

Von Perger's Spikes the Miracle River

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jamila Von Perger spikes on the river to stay alive at EPT Barcelona
Jamila Von Perger spikes on the river to stay alive at EPT Barcelona

Action folded around to Jamila Von Perger, the girlfriend of poker pro Manig Loeser, and she limped from the small blind. Florian-Dimitrie Duta then sweetened it a bit to 50,000 from the big blind. It appeared to be just what Von Perger was hoping for as she quickly announced that she was all in for 499,000.

Duta seemed a bit confused over the play and asked for a count. He tanked for over four minutes and then whispered, "Call."

Von Perger seemed shocked her opponent called, but perked up a bit when she discovered her {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} was ahead of Duta's {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Much to her disappointment, and that of her rail, the flop came down {7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs} to give Duta the lead with a pair of aces.

Von Perger was drawing to a two outer for her tournament life. She didn't find it on the turn, which was the {Q-Spades}, but she did when the {4-Spades} rolled off on the river. Von Perger was in disbelief that she caught the miracle card, but she sure was happy.

"Sick," she said as she made her way over to Loeser for a quick kiss. "One time [laughs]."

Vandersmissen Dismissed

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Kevin Vandersmissen
Kevin Vandersmissen

We're not sure of the exact betting, but we do know that Kevin Vandersmissen got his stack of 360,000 all in preflop holding the {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and was ahead of the Kimmo Kurko's {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

The {6-Spades}{k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} flop kept Vandersmissen firmly in the lead, and the {2-Clubs} turn meant the only way he could be eliminated was if Kurko caught an ace on the river. Wouldn't you know it, that's exactly what happened when the {a-Diamonds} plopped down. With that, Vandersmissen was sent to the rail.

Kaufmann Eliminated in Huge Three-Way Pot

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Florian-Dimitrie Duta stays alive.
Florian-Dimitrie Duta stays alive.

In the last hand before the break, a huge three-way pot took place at the feature table.

It began with Florian-Dimitrie Duta raising from the cutoff and Thomas Butzhammer three-betting him from the button. David Kaufmann then cold four-bet to 139,000 from the big blind, and Duta shoved for 431,000. Butzhammer, who had the biggest stack, thought for a bit before moving all in over the top, and Kaufman sort of shrugged before calling off for 637,000.

Duta: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Kaufmann: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Butzhammer: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

Buthammer was out in front, but Kaufmann was drawing to two overs. Duta, on the other hand, was in need of some major help. The {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop provided a little as Duta picked up a gutshot straight draw to a seven, but as it was Butzhammer's jacks were still in the lead.

They stayed there on the {4-Clubs}, and Butzhammer was one card away from scoring a double elimination. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't seal the deal as the {7-Diamonds} spiked on the river to give Duta the improbable straight and the triple to 1.315 million.

Meanwhile, Butzhammer took down the 412,000 side pot and a disappointed Kaufmann was dispatched in 42nd place.

Spittles Falls to Christoforou

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Ryan Spittles
Ryan Spittles

"All in and a call," we heard the dealer yell from a nearby table. We made our way over just in time to find Ryan Spittles all in and at risk against Andreas Christoforou.

Christoforou: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Spittles: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Christoforou seemed more nervous than Spittles despite being ahead. The {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop seemed to calm his nerves a little bit, but Spittles did pick up a wheel draw. The {6-Hearts} turn made the wheel draw obsolete as a four would result in a chopped pot, but that didn't happen as the {2-Clubs} blanked on the river. Spittles missed and was sent to the rail in 60th place.

Meanwhile, Andrey Danilyuk, Dmitry Yurasov and Clement Thumy have all been eliminated from the tournament.

Daher Done and Dusted

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Albert Daher on Day 3.
Albert Daher on Day 3.

We missed the action, but a back-and-forth raising way saw Albert Daher get his stack of approximately 450,000 all in preflop against Madis Müür. Daher held the {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} in the big blind, while Müür tabled the {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} in the cutoff.

The look on Daher's face was one of discontent, and it got even worse when the {4-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{5-Clubs} gave Müür a set. Daher needed either running nines to win of running straight cards to chop, and he got a little sweat as the {2-Diamonds} turn made the chop possible. Unfortunately for him, the {10-Spades} river wasn't the three he was looking for and Daher was sent to the rail while Müür chipped up to a million in chips.

Quads Eliminate Pobol

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Mikalai Pobal
Mikalai Pobal

Sergei Chantcev opened for 20,000, got a call from Glib Kovtunov, and from the big blind Mikalai Pobal moved all in for his last 71,000. Chantcev folded after some thought but Kovtunov called. Pobal had the {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and was racing against the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} of Kovtunov. The race was over on the flop however and the board ran out {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades}. With that, Pobal became the day's first elimination.

Meanwhile, WSOP Octo-Niner Russell Thomas was eliminated on the second hand of the day in 78th place.

Welcome Back to Day 4 of the European Poker Tour Season 10 Barcelona Main Event

Mikalai Pobal looks to defend his title, though he starts the day as the third shortest stack!
Mikalai Pobal looks to defend his title, though he starts the day as the third shortest stack!

Welcome back to the European Poker Tour Season 10 Barcelona Main Event. What started with 1,234 players is down to the final 79, each looking to push deeper into the money and ideally secure a spot at the second largest EPT Main Event ever held on European soil. The man best positioned to do just that is the chip leader, 26-year-old Tom Middleton from Leeds, UK, known as Middy to his friends and “hitthehole” online . He already has live tournament winnings totaling nearly $1 million and will add to that today.

While Middleton is the only player over a million in chips, there are quite a few players nipping at his heels including Kevin Vandersmissen (970,000), Niall Farrell (912,000), Thomas Butzhammer (827,000) and Andreas Christoforou (825,000). Others returning for Day 4 action are Kimmo Kurko (581,000), Team PokerStars Pro Christophe De Meulder (334,000), Kent Lundmark (Season 7 Barcelona champion), Dimitar Danchev (Season 9 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champion), and Mikalai Pobal (Season 9 Barcelona champion), making it possible that we could see the first-ever two-time EPT Main Event champion.

Lundmark will bring a stack of 501,000 into Day 4 while Danchev will be at 376,000 in chips. Defending champion Pobal, however, has quite the uphill battle on Day 4 as he will return with merely 71,000 in chips.

Action will kick off at noon CET, which is a little less than an hour from now. Join us then as we bring you all the action and eliminations from the tournament floor here at the Casino Barcelona. In the meantime, check out PokerNews' WAG Diaries with newlyweds Vanessa and Miranda Selbst:
