Griffin Benger wins the EPT High Roller

On Saturday, Griffin Benger’s 28th birthday, the Canadian won the European Poker Tour Season 9 Berlin High Roller, earning €429,000, a trophy, and of course, the Shamballa bracelet. It is the largest live score of his career, trumping his previous largest score by over half of a million U.S. dollars, and his second career first-place finish.

Benger defeated Aaron Lim heads up. Lim, who recently won the 2013 APPT Seoul Main Event and a bracelet at the 2013 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific, earned €240,100.

{id:1}Finnish professional player Joni Jouhkimainen entered the third and final day with the shortest stack of the seven remaining players , but it was James Mitchell who bowed out first. Faced with a button raise to 50,000 from Frenchman Philippe Ktorza, Mitchell three-bet shoved for 570,000 in the big blind. Ktorza called with ace-queen, which dominated Mitchell’s ace-jack. Ktorza’s hand held, and Mitchell was eliminated in seventh place, earning €54,900.

Roughly an hour later, Jouhkimainen took his leave in sixth place. The Fin moved all in for five big blinds over a raise from Benger and a three-bet from Ktorza. Benger folded, and Jouhkimainen turned over two sixes. Ktorza had him crushed with two queens and held, recording his second knockout of the day.

From there on out, it was the Griffin Benger show. The Canadian took a big chunk out of Martin Kabrhel’s stack in a three-bet pot. Benger flopped top pair, made trips on the river, and tried to trap Kabrhel. Kabrhel checked behind, but the damage was already done, and Benger was above two million chips.

Lim then eliminated Kabrhel, who entered the day second in chips. Kabrhel open-shoved for less than ten big blinds on the button with ace-deuce, and Lim re-shoved in the small blind with king-jack. Kabrhel flopped a pair of aces, but Lim turned Broadway and eliminated the Czech pro.

Benger then turned his attention to Max Lykov, who started the day as the chip leader. Benger made trips again, this time going runner-runner, and Lykov sent over more than 700,000 chips. Benger became the first and only player to cross the three million-chip threshold, and there was no looking back from there.

Lykov was left with 1.45 million chips, and preceded to lose another million to Lim. Lim got three streets of value from the Team Pro with top pair, receiving a full double up. Lykov was left with seven big blinds, and found himself all in with ace-five against Benger’s ace-nine suited. Benger flopped the nut flush, and Lykov hit the rail in fourth place, earning €102,900.

Benger dominated three-handed play, sitting with over 70% of the chips in play. His first victim was Ktorza, who three-bet all in for 700,000 with king-jack suited. Benger, the original raiser, called with ace-jack suited and held.

Lim doubled to start heads-up play, but could never get above 1.5 million chips. On the final hand, he open-jammed on the button for 870,000 with king-deuce, and Benger made the call with queen-jack. The flop fell {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, leaving Lim with just three outs to make Broadway, but it was Benger who made Broadway when the turn bricked off and the {k-Spades} completed the board. Lim added a €240,100 score to his already stellar results, but fell just short of the glory.

Congratulations are in order for Benger, who recorded the first six-figure score of his career. After the win, he joked that this is “probably my sixth or seven-best birthday of all time,” but we here at PokerNews know that this one takes the cake.

Thank you for joining us for coverage of the EPT Berlin High Roller. Be sure to check in next week for the EPT Grand Final in Monaco.

Aaron Lim Eliminated in 2nd Place (€240,100)

Level 26 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Aaron Lim - 2nd Place
Aaron Lim - 2nd Place

Aaron Lim had the button. He open shoved all inf or 870,000. Griffin Benger called and the hands were rolled over.

Lim: {K-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Benger: {Q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

The dealer pounded the table and produced a flop of {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. Benger jumped into the lead with his pair of queens and suddenly Lim was looking for a jack to make Broadway. That jack did not come on the turn. Rather, the {4-Diamonds} hit the felt.

Suddenly Benger was one card away from being crowned EPT Berlin High Roller champion. The dealer rolled over the river.

The {K-Spades}!

Benger made Broadway to finish the hand and eliminate Lim in second place. Lim will pocket a cool €240,100 for his runner-up finish in this event.

Philippe Ktorza Eliminated in 3rd Place (€144,000)

Level 26 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Philippe Ktorza - 3rd Place
Philippe Ktorza - 3rd Place

Griffin Benger had the button. He opened to 120,000. Philippe Ktorza moved all in for about 700,000 from the small blind. Aaron Lim folded his big blind and Benger instantly called.

Benger: {A-Spades}{J-Spades}
Ktorza: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

Ktorza was behind and needed help. Unfortunately, Benger paired up his top card on the {A-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop. The {10-Spades} fell on fourth street and suddenly Ktorza picked up four outs to make a straight on the river. It was not meant to be, however, as the {9-Clubs} completed the board and Ktorza became our third place finisher.

Benger is now heads up with Aaron Lim. Lim has about 750,000 to Benger's 6.25 million.

Max Lykov was all in and at risk before the flop for his short stack of roughly 350,000. Lykov held {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts} against the {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} of Griffin Benger.

The dealer spread out a flop of {6-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Benger instantly flopped the nut flush. The {Q-Clubs} and the {4-Hearts} completed the board and the Team Pro was sent to the rail in fourth place. He will collect €102,900 for his efforts.

Benger is now sitting on about 4.52 million in chips.

Lykov Makes Hero Call; Gets Crippled by Lim

Level 25 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Aaron Lim doubles
Aaron Lim doubles

Again, before the level changed, Aaron Lim opened for a raise to 80,000 on the button, and Max Lykov three-bet to 190,000.

"How much do you have?" the recent World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific bracelet winner asked the Team Pro. "One-point four?"

Lykov used his index finger to count the stacks, then nodded. Lim called.

The dealer burned a single card, then spread a flop of {k-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Lykov tapped the felt with one finger, and Lim tanked before firing out 165,000. Lykov sat quietly for a minute or so, then called.

The turn was the {2-Hearts}, Lykov checked again, and Lim returned to the tank. Roughly 90 seconds later he reemerged, and slid forward 245,000. Lykov tank-called once again.

The {j-Clubs} completed the board, and Lykov checked a third and final time. Lim sat quietly, riffling his remaining red T25,000 chips in his right hand, and then placed them on top of three towers of blue T5,000 chips.

"All in," the Australian announced, making it 475,000.

Lykov tanked for longer than he had on any other street, eventually cutting out enough chips to make the call. Finally, after several minutes, he committed them.

Lim turned over {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} confidently, and Lykov flicked his cards forward a few centimeters. He wanted them to remain face down, but per tournament rules, they were tabled: {q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

Lykov plummeted to 370,000 chips, while Lim doubled to 2.15 million.

The Birthday Boy Extends His Lead

Level 25 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Griffin Benger - Birthday boy
Griffin Benger - Birthday boy

Prior to the start of Level 25, Griffin Benger, who is celebrating his birthday today, opened to 80,000 in first position. Max Lykov called on his direct left, and both blinds released.

The flop fell {k-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, Benger led out for 100,000, and Lykov made the call.

The turn was the {10-Hearts}, and Benger slowed down, checking to Lykov who tossed out 165,000. Benger tank-called.

The river was a repeat ten - the {10-Diamonds} - and Benger checked again. Lykov fired a large bet of 365,000, and Benger quickly assembled enough chips to make the call. He paused momentarily, then pushed them forward.

Lykov showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} for kings and tens, but Benger had that beat with {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} for trip tens.

The birthday boy is now an overwhelming chip leader with 3.35 million, while Lykov is down to 1.45 million.

Martin Kabrhel Eliminated in 5th Place (€82,300)

Level 24 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Martin Kabrhel - 5th Place
Martin Kabrhel - 5th Place

Martin Kabrhel open-shoved for 360,000 on the button, Aaron Lim tanked in the small blind before re-shoving for around 800,000 or so, and Griffin Benger surrendered his big blind.

Kabrhel: {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Lim: {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

The flop fell {q-Hearts}{a-Spades}{5-Clubs}, giving Kabrhel a pair of aces and Lim a gut-shot straight draw, and the {10-Clubs} slammed on the turn. Lim made Broadway, but Kabrhel could still scoop the pot and double up with a club on the river.

The river wasn't a club however, it was a meaningless {4-Hearts}, and Kabrhel was eliminated in fifth place.

Lim chipped up to 1.1 million, but lost a subsequent hand and now has around 975,000.

Joni Jouhkimainen - 6th Place

Griffin Benger opened to 80,000 from under the gun. It folded to Philippe Ktorza who made it 180,000 from the cutoff. Joni Jouhkimainen went into the tank on the button before finally plopping his stack into the middle for around 200,000. The rest of the table and Benger folded and Ktorza called.

Ktorza: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Jouhkimainen: {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Ktorza was way out in the lead and stayed that way through the {J-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Spades} flop. Jouhkimainen needed to spike a six or running straight cards on the next streets but ultimately nothing materialized as the {5-Clubs} turned and the {9-Diamonds} rivered.

Action folded to Philippe Ktorza on the button. He made it 50,000 to go which caused the small blind to fold. James Mitchell peeked down at his cards in the big blind and announced that he was all in for around 570,000. Ktorza took a deep breath and moved chips into the middle, signifying a call.

Ktorza: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Mitchell: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The board came down {10-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Spades} and Mitchell was unable to improve. He will collect €54,900 in prize money for his seventh place finish.

Lykov and Kabrhel Lead Final Seven

Max Lykov - Chip Leader
Max Lykov - Chip Leader

Welcome back to our coverage of Season 9 of the European Poker Tour Berlin. We're here for the third day of the €10,000 High Roller event. Yesterday's play saw 45 players become whittled down to the final seven. By the end of play, Team Pro Max Lykov led the final table with a stack of 1.683 million.

The eliminations came fast and furiously yesterday as the stacked field took their seats at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. Pros such as Bryn Kenney, Jan Heitmann, Michael McDonald, Marvin Rettenmaier, and Dan Smith all fell before the field hit the money.

When the field had just seventeen players left we were on the money bubble. Chris Brammer became the bubble boy when he fell at the hands of Aaron Lim. From there, everyone was guaranteed at least €22,000 and that's exactly what Georgios Karakousis and David Peters received. Also finishing in the money were Gautam Sabharwal, Artem Litvinov (€24,700), Igor Kurganov, AP Phahurat (€27,500), and Day 2 chip leader Ronny Voth (€30,300).

Jan-Peter Jachtmann became the unofficial final table bubble boy when he played a 1.4 million chip pot with Martin Kabrhel. With the final table set, the players decided to play on for a few levels instead of wrapping up for the night. During that time the final table saw its first casualty when Scott Seiver was eliminated in eighth place.
