Herold Leads After Day 4

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Roman Herold - Chip Leader
Roman Herold - Chip Leader

On Thursday, Season 9 of the European Poker Tour continued with Day 4 of the EPT Berlin Main Event. After five more levels of play, the chip leader is German Roman Herold. On one of the final hands of the night, he and Alexander Helbig, who was the chip leader at the time, played in a more than 2 million-chip pot – the largest of the tournament thus far. Helbig flopped two pair, but Herold rivered a better two pair, and called a 500,000-chip bet.

Herold’s rail went into a frenzy as the German raked in the pot, and he will lead the remaining 17 players at the start of Day 5 with 4.485 million chips.

Helbig, who ascended to the chip lead during Level 22 after he eliminated Pratyush Buddiga, bagged the fourth-largest stack with 2.040 million.

Day 4 began with 55 players vying for EPT glory and a boatload of purple €500 notes. However, for a majority of them, their dreams would turn to nightmares. Several players busted during the first level of play, including Thomas Hall, Ronny Voth, Sandra Naujoks, and Liv Boeree. Boeree lost a race holding ace-king against Natalie Hoff’s pocket eights, leaving her with just three big blinds, and two hands later she was all in and at risk with king-ten against Kevin Stani’s nine-four. Stani made a pair of nines, and Boeree was eliminated in 48th place, earning €15,000.

At the start of Level 21, Dashgyn Aliev won a huge, 1.6 million-chip pot. Facing a four-bet shove and a five-bet re-shove, Aliev called with two red aces. They held against Colin Moffatt’s ace-king and Daniel Reijmer’s pocket tens. Reijmer was eliminated that hand, while Moffatt was eliminated shortly thereafter.

The end of Level 21 produced two incredible hands, one that eliminated Bryn Kenney, and one that took out start-of-day chip leader Aku Joentausta. In Kenney’s hand, Olivier Busquet cold four-bet jammed for 247,000 over an open from Helbig and a three-bet from Kenney. Helbig called the jam, Kenney re-shoved for 540,000, and Helbig called. Both Helbig and Busquet turned over ace-king, giving Kenney and his two black jacks a sizable advantage, but the flop produced an ace. The turn and river both bricked, and Kenney was eliminated.

In Joentausta’s final hand, he moved all in with ace-jack on the turn of an ace-high board. He was called by Herold, who held two pair, and the river was insignificant. The Fin was eliminated in 31st place, earning €22,000.

With Buddiga’s aforementioned elimination against Helbig, the remaining 24 players redrew for the final three tables. It was there where Freerk Post lost a massive cooler against Russian Aliev. When the dust settled, Post was all in and at risk preflop with two queens and dominated by Aliev’s pocket kings. The men held, and the Dutchman hit the rail in 24th place, earning €27,000.

There was another big cooler during Level 23, this one coming at the feature table. After check-raising American Calvin Anderson on the turn of a king-high board, Khiem Nguyen moved all in for 622,000 on the river when a repeat king completed the board. Anderson called with a full house of sixes over kings, but Nguyen had that beat with jacks full of kings. Nguyen went on to bad the third-most chips, while Anderson will have to work with just under 19 big blinds.

Theodoros Aidonopoulos, Ramil Yusupov, Jose Maria Galindo, Lukasz Golczyk, and Emil Ohlsson were the last five players to bust. Ohlsson was all in and at risk with ace-jack against the ace-king of Robert Auer and the pocket queens of Helbig. Auer found a king, virtually tripling up, while Ohlsson was eliminated in 18th place, earning €27,000.

Massive Cooler for Anderson Against Nguyen

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Khiem Nguyen
Khiem Nguyen

We caught Calvin Anderson and Khiem Nguyen heads up on a board of {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{k-Hearts}{j-Spades}. Nguyen checked, Anderson fired 120,000 or so, and Nguyen check-raised to what looked like 300,000. Anderson called.

The river was a repeat king - the {k-Spades} - and Nguyen moved all in for 622,000. There was a beat, and then Anderson called.

Nguyen showed {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for jacks full of kings, and Anderson frustratedly showed {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for a lesser full house.

The Downfall of Joentausta

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Aku Joentausta - Eliminated
Aku Joentausta - Eliminated

According the EPT Live team, Aku Joentausta was eliminated when Roman Herold turned two pair against Joentausta's flopped top pair.

Joentausta opened to 25,000 in late position, Daniel-Gai Pidun called in the small blind, and Herold three-bet to 79,000. Both Joentausta and Pidun called. The flop fell {a-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}, Pidun checked, and Herold fired out 112,000. Both Joentausta and Pidun called.

The turn was the {9-Clubs}, Pidun checked again, and Herold fired 267,000. Joentausta moved all in for 560,000, Pidun folded, and Herold asked for a count before calling.

Herold: {a-}{6-}
Joentausta: {a-}{j-}

The river was the {7-Spades}, and just like that the Day 2/3 chip leader was eliminated.

Busquet Survives; Kenney Eliminated

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Bryn Kenney Says Goodbye
Bryn Kenney Says Goodbye

Alexander Helbig opened to 27,000 from under the gun. Two seats over, Bryn Kenney cut out a three-bet to 64,000. Olivier Busquet then looked down at his hand and announced a four-bet all in for 247,000. Action then folded back around to Helbig who wasted little time announcing a call.

Action was then on Kenney who sat riffling his chips and pondering his action.

"All in," said Kenney, who moved 540,000 total into the middle.

"Call," said Helbig just as quick as before.

Helbig: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Busquet: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Kenney: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}

Kenney was looking great with both opponents sharing each other's outs. One of those four outs, however, drilled the flop when it fell {9-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Kenney hung his head in disappointment.

The turn was the {5-Hearts} and Kenney was now one card away from elimination. The {9-Hearts} finished off the board and Kenney became the only casualty of this crazy hand. Helbig and Busquet chopped up the rest and Kenney was sent packing just before the break.

Liv Free or Die Hard

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Liv Boeree (Day 3) Eliminated
Liv Boeree (Day 3) Eliminated

Team Pro Liv Boeree has been eliminated from play.

Boeree's downfall began when she opened to 20,000 from early position. Natalie Hof, from the next seat over, shipped all in for 154,000 total. Action folded back around to Boeree who snapped her off.

Boeree: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Hof: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

The flop brought {J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and Boeree would need to improve on the subsequent streets to send Hof packing. The {3-Spades} on the turn did not do it and neither did the {Q-Diamonds} that completed the board. Boeree was forced to ship a majority of her stack over to Hof, leaving herself with only slightly above 30,000.

Two hands later, Boeree shipped all in for 29,000 from under the gun. Action trickled all of the way around to Kevin Stani in the big blind who called.

Boeree: {K-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Stani: {9-Spades}{4-Clubs}

Boeree was the favorite heading to the flop but suddenly fell behind when Stani paired up as it fell {2-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. The {2-Diamonds} came on the turn and Boeree needed to pair up on the river to stay alive.

Fifth street was the {A-Clubs} and the Team Pro was officially eliminated from play.

Joentausta Leads Final 55

Aku Joentausta
Aku Joentausta

Yesterday saw the final 168 players return to the felt at Season 9 of the European Poker Tour Main Event. The players popped the money bubble and beyond as they bet, raised, and folded their way into one of the top 136 cashing positions. By the end of five levels only 55 runners remained with Aku Joentausta retaining his spot at the top of the chip counts.

Joentausta is the man to catch during Day 4 play with his stack of 1.039 million but there are others close on his heels. Rounding out the top three are Emil Ohlsson (1.011 million) and Pascal Vos (972,000).

While the top three may not be household names, there are still several notable players returning to the felt today. The likes of Calvin Anderson (744,000), Olivier Busquet (719,000), Kevin Stani (681,000), Day 1a chip leader Ronny Voth (332,000), Liv Boeree (279,000), Bryn Kenney (229,000), Max Lehmanski (169,000), and Boris Becker (116,000) all have a shot at taking home the EPT Main Event title.

Yesterday's play also saw a slew of notable names hit the rail with a min-cash or more to their name. Mickey Petersen, Davidi Kitai, Ville Mattila, Jan Heitmann, Todd Terry, Salvatore Bonavena, Dominik Nitsche, Kitty Kuo, Barny Boatman, and Theo Jorgensen were among those to make the money.

Play will resume today with the final 55 players taking their seats at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. We will play down until the final 16 is reached. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for all of the latest from the tournament floor!
