Alen Bilic Leads Final Six in EPT12 Malta Main Event

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante

Day 5 of the 2015 PokerStars.com EPT Season 12 Malta Main Event – a tournament that attracted 651 players and created a prize pool of €3,157,350 – saw the surviving 16 players return to battle down to the final six.

Leading the pack with 7,635,000 in chips is 26-year-old online pro Alen Bilic, who currently sits #4 in the Bosnia & Herzegovina all time money list. PocketFives currently has Bilic ranked as his country’s #1 online tournament player with a string of amazing results on PokerStars and more than $2 million in lifetime cashes. His results include winning the Sunday 500 last year for nearly $80k, back-to-back wins in the Big $162, and winning the PokerStars Sunday 500 for $71,000 in March last year.

Others still in contention for the €602,400 first-place prize are Niall Farrell (5,115,000), Jaroslaw Sikora (2,455,000), Rainer Kempe (1,505,000), Sam Greenwood (1,615,000), and Giulio Spampinato (1,180,000).

The day kicked off with an elimination in the very first hand of play when Kitty Kuo, the last woman in the field, got her short stack all in preflop holding the {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} and found herself racing against the {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} of Bjorn Geissert. The {a-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop was disaster for Kuo, and she watched helplessly as the {8-Hearts} blanked on the turn followed by the {6-Spades} river. Kuo took home €27,120 for her 16th-place finish.

From there, Apostolos Bechrakis (15th - €30,280), Darrell Goh (14th - €30,280), Geissert (13th - €33,440), Akim Aouine (12th - €33,440), Gianluca Escobar (11th - €40,410), and Antonio Chemi (10th - €40,410) all hit the rail to set up the unofficial final table of nine.

At that point, in Level 27 (25,000/50,000/5,000), Bilic opened for 100,000 from the cutoff and Alexander Ivarsson, who began the day as chip leader, three-bet to 250,000 from the button. Both blinds folded, Bilic four-bet to 625,000 and the pressure was back on Ivarsson. The Swede tanked for a fair bit before moving in for 2,065,000, and Bilic called.

Bilic: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}
Ivarsson: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

It was a huge flip, but not after the flop came {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades} to give Bilic the lead. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn was a blank, leaving Ivarsson two outs. He didn't hit either one of them as the {7-Diamonds} hit and Ivarsson hit the rail in ninth place for €49,560.

After the dinner break, a short-stacked Nabil Cardoso, who was looking to become just the second player from Spain to win an EPT Main Event, shoved his last 490,000 from the small blind holding the {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Sikora called from the big with the {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. The board ran out {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts}, and Cardoso was ousted in eighth place for €62,570.

Not long after, Daniel Dvoress four-bet all for 1.62 million in holding the {a-Spades}{j-Spades} and found himself dominated by the {a-Clubs}{k-Spades} of Farrell. Dvoress was dominated, and wound up drawing dead by the turn after the board ran out {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}. Dvoress' exit in seventh place for €91,550 meant the final six were set.

Daniel Dvoress Eliminated in 7th Place (€91,550)

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Daniel Dvoress - 7th Place
Daniel Dvoress - 7th Place

Action folded to Daniel Dvoress on the button and he raised to 135,000. Niall Farrell, who was in the small blind, responded by three-betting to 390,000, and when action was back on Dvoress he thought for a few moments before moving all in for 1.62 million. Farrell snap-called.

Farrell: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Dvoress: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}

Dvoress was in dire straits, and things got even worse when the {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop delivered Farrell trips. Dvoress needed to catch running straight cards, but the {6-Spades} turn took away any chance of that happening. The meaningless {4-Clubs} was put out on the river, and Dvoress exited the EPT12 Malta Main Event in seventh place for €91,550.

With that, the final six players are set and play has been halted for the night. Stay tuned for a full recap of the Day 6 action.

Nabil Cardoso Eliminated in 8th Place (€62,570)

Nabil Cardoso
Nabil Cardoso

Action folded to Nabil Cardoso in the small blind and he shoved for 490,000. Jaroslaw Sikora called from the big blind after getting confirmation on how much it was.

Jaroslaw Sikora: {K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Nabil Cardoso: {Q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, changing nothing much. The {6-Spades} on the turn was a blank as well and so was the {8-Hearts} on the river.

Nabil Cardoso cashed €62,570 for his 8th place finish. The remaining 8 players are guaranteed €91,550.

Alen Bilic opened for 100,000 from the cutoff. Alexander Ivarsson on the button three-bet to 250,000 and both blinds folded. Bilic four-bet to 625,000 and the pressure was back on Ivarsson. The Swede tanked for a fair bit before moving in for 2,065,000. Bilic snap called.

Bilic: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}
Ivarsson: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

The flop came {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and Ivarsson looked up in disgust. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn was a blank, leaving Ivarsson two outs. He didn't hit either one of them, the {7-Diamonds} hit and Ivarsson was out.

Alexander Ivarsson takes home €49,560. The remaining 8 players have made the official final table and are guaranteed €62,570.

Antonio Chemi Eliminated in 10th Place (€40,410)

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Antonio Chemi
Antonio Chemi

Jaroslaw Sikora opened the cutoff for 80,000 and Antonio Chemi, who had been blinded down to 210,000, pushed all in from the button. Both blinds folded and Sikora added the few chips he needed to make the call.

Antonio Chemi: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}
Jaroslaw Sikora: {A-Spades}{2-Hearts}

It was a virtual coin flip who would win before the flop, but Sikora jumped to the spot of heavy favorite after the first three community cards: {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Spades}. The {7-Hearts} on the turn sealed the deal for Sikora, and the {7-Spades} on the river was there just to make things official.

Antoni Chemi made his exit in 10th place, netting him €40,410. The remaining nine players are guaranteed €49,560 and are now redrawn to one table. Play will continue till the official final table of 8 is reached and then halted for the official photo. Play than resumes till only 6 players remain and the bagging and tagging will commence.

The tournament is now on a small break for the redraw, stay tuned for the chip counts and seating order of the final 9 players.

Gianluca Escobar Eliminated in 11th Place (€40,410)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Gianluca Escobar
Gianluca Escobar

In the last hand of Level 25, a huge hand took place at the TV table.

It began when Niall Farrell opened for 70,000 from the cutoff only to have Gianluca Escobar three-bet to 175,000 from the button. Sam Greenwood then four-bet to 475,000 from the small blind, and Farrell, who had the big stack, five-bet jammed. Escobar called off for 1.572 million, and Greenwood got out of the way.

"I have a cracker hand," said Farrell, who had apparently been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Farrell: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}
Escobar: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"I said I wouldn't do this again on the stream," added Farrell, who would be left with just 10 big blinds if he lost.

Farrell was behind, but the {6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop made things interesting.

"I'll take that," Farrell said of his pair and gutshot. The dealer then burned and turned the {10-Diamonds} to give Farrell two pair and drive a dagger through Escobar's heart.

Escobar had eight outs headed to the river, but it came the {10-Clubs} to improve Farrell to a full house. A disappointed Escobar was unexpectedly sent to the rail in 11th place for €40,410.

After Making Day 5, Gianluca Escobar Wins €1k NL Hyper Turbo

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Gianluca Escobar (right)
Gianluca Escobar (right)

According to PokerStars, after making Day 5 early last night, Italian Gianluca Escobar hadn’t had quite enough poker when Day 4 of the EPT Malta drew to a halt. Here's what they had to say:

Instead of taking a well-earned rest for making the penultimate day of the flagship Main Event, he jumped in to last night’s €1k NL Hyper Turbo. And boom for Escobar, he took it down.

Escobar originally hails from Naples but now lives in Sliema, just a few minutes away from Portomaso Casino. He has every reason to love his newly-adopted country: it is at this very casino that the 27-year-old scored his biggest live cash to date, winning the People’s Poker Tour Main Event in September for €41,090.

Escobar can now celebrate his first-ever EPT victory as well after defeating a 92-strong field in last night’s €1k NL Hyper Turbo for €23,700. He beat Mikko Turtiainen heads-up to seize the title and €23,700 first prize. The Finn meanwhile has already had his moment in the EPTLive sun. He was taking part in last night’s turbo after a long spell on the TV table yesterday; his dreams of winning the Main Event were brought to a halt however when both he and Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden were eliminated in one hand by Jaroslaw Sikora. Turtiainen finished 28th place for €15,620 but was able to boost his bankroll by an additional €16,460 with his runner-up finish last night.

There were 13 players taking a share of the €89,240 prize pool in the popular turbo event including IPT7 Malta winner Georgios Zisimopoulos (fourth for €8,520), EPT Copenhagen champion Anton Wigg, who won the €500 PLO Turbo the other night, and EPT Dortmund runner-up Cristiano Blanco.

Akim Aouine Eliminated in 12th Place (€33,440)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Akim Aouine
Akim Aouine

Three eliminations just happened in quick succession, that latest being France's Akim Aouine.

It happened when action folded to Jaroslaw Sikora in the small blind and he raised to 55,000. Aouine three-bet all in from the big for roughly 400,000, and Sikora snap-called.

Sikora: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Aouine: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The {3-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop gave Sikora a full house, which meant Aouine needed to catch either running aces or threes to win the pot. The {9-Hearts} turn took away any chance of that happening, and Aouine's elimination became official once the {7-Spades} was put out on the river.

Bjorn Geissert
Bjorn Geissert

Ivarsson made it 50,000 from the button and Geissert called from the big blind. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} and Geissert checked. Ivarsson made a continuation bet of 50,000 and Geissert raised to 125,000. Ivarsson three bet to 325,000 and after a long tank, Geissert shoved all in for 1.3 million. Ivarsson snap called.

Geissert: {Q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Ivarsson: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}

Ivarsson needed to fade the three deuces and two queens to win the 2,777,000 pot. The {8-Clubs} on the turn was safe for him and so was the {4-Hearts} on the river. Exit for Geissert, monster chip lead for Ivarsson!

Alen Bilic opened for 45,000 from the hijack and Darrell Goh responded with a three-bet to 117,000 from the small blind. Bilic then announced he was all in, and Goh snap-called off for approximately 600,000 total.

Goh: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Bilic: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

It was a flip, but Goh needed to improve to stay alive. The {7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop didn't do it, and neither did the {3-Spades} turn. Goh needed either an ace or king to extend his EPT12 Malta Main Event, but it wasn't in the cards as the {4-Clubs} blanked on the river.
