EPT National Draws Over Thousand Runners on Day 1a; Bura Takes the Lead

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Maksim Bura
Maksim Bura

One conclusion can be drawn right away at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona: the stop is as popular as ever. While not surprising in the very least, players once again showed up in droves to the popular Catalonian city to try their luck in the €1,100 EPT National. The first of four starting days started at noon local time and lasted a whopping fourteen hours. 189 out of 1,264 players, or 15% of the original field, were able to make it through the day.

Leading the way after seventeen full levels is Maksim Bura, who build his stack from 30,000 to 736,000 on the first day. Other players that are in prime contention after Day 1a are Camilo Hernandez Henao (698,000) and the Portuguese Miguel Silva (565,000) and Andre Moreira (564,000). Biggest notable in the top of the counts is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Upeshka De Silva, who bagged 548,000 on top of taking out the bubble boy. Holding queen-jack, De Silva had flopped two jacks and received a call from Leonid Timonin with pocket tens, ending the latter's run in the dreaded spot.

Other notables that will return in the money include Joey Weissman (404,000), Ari Engel (393,000), Matthias De Meulder (222,000), Heidi May (217,000), Michael Tureniec (128,000), Thomas Boivin (58,000) and Erwann Pecheux (52,000).

Those that failed to make Day 2 on their first attempt include Jasper Meijer van Putten, Dominik Panka, Maria Lampropulos, Sander van Wesemael and Adam Owen. They, as well as many others, will have up to three more shots as one reentry per starting flight is allowed.

The turbo Day 1b will conclude shortly after Day 1a is done. Day 1c will be a regular starting day again and commence at noon on Thursday. The Day 1d turbo to wrap the starting days off commences at 7 p.m. on the same day. PokerNews covers the event wire-to-wire so make sure to check back regularly as to not miss anything of the EPT Barcelona National!

Bubble Bursts; Two Players Out

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Leonid Timonin
Leonid Timonin

The bubble has burst on Day 1a of the €1,100 EPT National and play has been suspended as a result. 189 players have made their way to Day 2 after two players busted in the final hand of the night.

First one at risk was Suleyman Ertop, who had reshoved for 67,000 from the blinds after a raise in late position. Ertop was up with {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} against {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and despite flopping and turning a world of outs, he didn't get there on a {6-Spades}{10-Hearts}{K-Spades}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} board.

At another table, Leonid Timonin had called all in with {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} on a {J-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{J-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{9-Spades} board. His opponent, Upeshka De Silva, showed {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for trip jacks and Timonin would also end up empty-handed.

A recap of today's action is to follow.

Lampropulos to the Rail

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Maria Lampropulos
Maria Lampropulos

After a raise to 8,000 in middle position, Maria Lampropulos three-bet shoved 42,500 on the button. Feras Abid called the shove from the big blind and the opener folded.

Maria Lampropulos: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Feras Abid: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}

Lampropulos' pair was pipped by Abid and the {2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades} board brought no help for the Argentinian, who's close to surpassing the 3M mark in lifetime winnings.

PokerStars Adds 25K REG Charity Event to EPT Barcelona Schedule

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Stefan Schillhabel, winner of the 25K Reg Charity event at the 2018 PCA
Stefan Schillhabel, winner of the 25K Reg Charity event at the 2018 PCA

On Friday, August 24 at 1 p.m. PokerStars and REG Charity once again join forces to host a special 25K REG Charity event during EPT Barcelona. The buy-in will be set at EUR 26,000, with 25k going into the prize pool and 1k to charity.

There will be unlimited re-entries, big blind ante and a thirty-second shot-clock, as well as a special structure that allows for deeper play at the beginning, as well as on the final table. Players will have lunch, dinner and drinks served during the tournament. Levels will be 20 minutes each and late registration will be open until the end of level 9.

The foundation, founded by PokerStars Team Pro's Igor Kurganov and Liv Boeree, Philipp Gruissem and Stefan Huber, has selected two charitable projects as beneficiaries of the donations. All donations will be split evenly between the Foundational Research Institute, which is working to prevent dystopian outcomes from advanced technology, and the Humane Slaughter Association, which is dedicated to minimizing suffering for animals during slaughter.

"With the help of partnering organisations, REG Charity identifies the most effective charities across human, animal and research areas," Kurganov explained the charity's goals. "Currently, the chosen two orgs seem to be exceptionally low-hanging fruit"

"I like to focus on underfunded and important causes," Kurganov added when asked about the choice for these specific two charities. The lives of future generations (far) outnumber current lives today and we affect them greatly. FRI [Foundational Research Institute] focuses on research and policy advice to reduce risks from emerging technologies and astronomical suffering in the future. They are cause-neutral, meaning that they focus on whichever research area has the highest EV in terms of suffering reduction."

"HSA [Humane Slaughter Association] has a great track record of working with governments and using tech advancements to increase the welfare of farm animals. Given the vast numbers of 50-100 billion land animals and over 100 billion fish that are slaughtered each year, a more humane treatment of those food animals affects tons of lives and is quite cheap," the REG Charity co-founder told PokerNews.

It's the fourth time PokerStars and REG Charity join forces with a special 25K event. Earlier events took place during the 2017 SCOOP, the 2017 WCOOP and the 2018 PCA. In total, over $250,000 has been raised for REG's recommended charities. In January, Stefan Schillhabel won the live 25K event at the 2018 PCA for $213,977.

The Russian Team PokerStars Pro is excited for the special tournament that commences on Friday, August 24 at 1 p.m. "High Rollers are fun already - when you add a charity element to them and add food and especially drinks you get the best atmosphere you can find at a poker table. Playing a high buy-in, that's fast-paced with the entire rake going to charity is as good as a tournament can get!"

Ari Engel
Ari Engel

Ari Engel has continued his good momentum after the dinner break and is currently sat on 175,000. In his most recent hand, the action folded to Engel in the cutoff, and he raised to 3,200 with only the player in the big blind making the call.

The flop came down {6-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Engel's continuation bet was enough to take down the pot after the action was checked to him.

Weissman Moves All In

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Joey Weissman

The action was opened from a player in early position after he raised to 1,800. Joey Weissman was on the button, and once the rest of the table had folded, he moved all in for 12,500. Both the players in the blinds folded and with the decision back on the initial raiser he thought for a minute before he let his hand go into the muck and Weissman collected the pot.

Check-Raise Forces Wheeler to Fold

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Jason Wheeler
Jason Wheeler

The flop was down {q-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Jason Wheeler, in early position, was up against the two players in the blinds. They both checked to Wheeler, and he bet 1,800. The player in the small blind called before the big blind folded.

The turn brought the {6-Spades}, and Wheeler saw his opponent check-raise his 3,700 bet to 13,700. Wheeler thought for a minute before he opted to let his hand go and was left with 10,000 going into level 6.

Engel Backdoors Into Merlin

On the far corner table in the room, Ari Engel raised to 400 from under the gun and Pierre Merlin defended his big blind. On the {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop, Merlin checked, Engel bet 400, Merlin check-raised to 1,600 and Engel called.

Merlin bet 2,500 on the {5-Diamonds} turn and Engel stuck around. On the {2-Diamonds} river, Merlin bet 5,100 and Engel called after ten seconds.

Merlin showed {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} for a pair of queens but was second best as Engel opened up {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a backdoor flush to drag a sizable pot right off the bat.

The Highly Anticipated €1,100 EPT National Starts Today!

Pedro Cairat, 2017 PokerStars National Championship Winner
Pedro Cairat, 2017 PokerStars National Championship Winner

At noon local time, cards will be in the air for the first of four starting days of the €1,100 EPT National at the 2018 EPT Barcelona. The Barcelona National has been one of the most popular 1K's in Europe for years. Last year drew an astonishing 4,557 runners, making it the largest live event in PokerStars history. Tons of players were already spotted in and around Casino Barcelona last night, including 800 players in the EPT National satellite, and another bumper field is expected in the sun-drenched Catalonian city.

Last year, flying under the PokerStars Championship Banner, Argentina's Pedro Cairat conquered the massive field for a life-changing payday of €432,178. Two years ago, back when it was called the Estrellas Main Event, Mohamed Samri won it for €353,220, after chopping with Teun Kooij heads-up, who walked away with the bigger payday of €372,060.

Two $30,000 Platinum Passes are added by PokerStars to spice up the EPT National even further. The eventual winner on Sunday, August 26 will receive one, as well as one lucky winner of the Crazy Pineapple hand challenge on Day 2. Both of them will be able to punch their ticket to the Bahama's for the PokerStars Players NL Hold'em Championship, held from 6-10 January 2019.

Day 1a will commence at noon local time and will feature 40-minute levels throughout the day. Play will be suspended after 15% of the field is remaining, which means Day 2 has to be reached in order to make the money. A second starting flight will kick off at 7 p.m. tonight and feature 20-minute levels instead. One entry per flight is permitted, allowing players to buy in up to four times in this tournament, one for each starting day.

PokerNews will cover one of the most popular tournaments in Europe wire-to-wire and will bring you all the live updates from this event, as well as eight other events over the course of the next twelve days. PokerNews will also live cover this event in Spanish and French.
