Ponakovs Stays Alive
Level 3
: Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
A sizable pot of 38,000 chips had been created in a heads-up battle between Aleksejs Ponakovs in the small blind and Jules Dickerson on the button. The board read 3♠Q♥10♠9♠ and Ponakovs checked to Dickerson, who bet out 11,000 chips.
After thinking for a while, Ponakovs made the call and the 9♦ river completed the board. Both players now knuckled the table and Ponakovs tabled 8♠8♣. His pocket pair was good enough to win the pot as Dickerson mucked his cards.
