Ryan Fee Leads After a Record-Breaking Day 1

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Fee bags the Day 1 chip lead
Fee bags the Day 1 chip lead

Day 1 of the €50,000 Super High Roller from European Poker Tour Barcelona has come to a close. This event marked a spectacular start to the 100th EPT event ever held, and an elite record-breaking field of competitors were in the mix.

The biggest story of the day was that of the size of the field. At the completion of play, things had grown to 56 unique entries with 15 reentries. That meant a total of 71 entries and the largest €50,000 Super High Roller in Barcelona history. What's more is that players still have the option to enter and reenter up until the start of play on Day 2, which will be on Tuesday at 12 p.m. local time. If you just happen to have an extra €50,000 lying around, Casino Barcelona is where the action will be.

Following the completion of the first eight levels of play — of which players began with 250,000 in chips — Ryan Fee finished on top of the leaderboard with 919,000 in his stack.

Fee scored two big eliminations to highlight his day. First, he busted Dong Kim with ace-king versus tens by hitting a king on the flop. Then right at the end of the day, Fee sent Mike McDonald packing. It was McDonald's second time busting the event, but he will still be able to reenter once more before Day 2 begins.

Among the faces in the field for Day 1 were Dan Smith and Vitaly Lunkin, both former champions of this event. Smith won the inaugural €50,000 Super High Roller in Barcelona, an event that took place in Season 9. Lunkin is the defending champion of the event after having topped the field in Season 10. Both players survived the first starting day and will be back in action on Day 2 in their continued quest for a second title.

Also moving on to Day 2 was Erik Seidel. What's interesting about Seidel is that he made the final table in both Season 9 and Season 10 in this event, meaning an appearance this year would earn him three in a row. McDonald also achieved this feat, but it will left to be determined as to whether or not he will enter for a third time and chase a third final table.

Then there were 2014 WSOP November Niners Jorryt van Hoof and Martin Jacobson. Van Hoof is the chip leader of the WSOP Main Event and started at the same table as his fellow November Niner. The two got in some early practice hands against one another, but Jacobson was moved a couple hours into the day, so any more playing experience will have to wait until later on.

Other notables advancing to Day 2 were Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, and Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu has fired two bullets in the event, but he's got more than enough big buy-in experience to justify his reentry actions.

All of the remaining players will be back on Tuesday at 12 p.m. local time for Day 2, and anyone who has busted can still reenter up until that point. New players may also buy in up until the start time, and word on the street is that there could be a few brand new competitors to start the day.

For now, that's the end of PokerNews' coverage from Barcelona, but be sure to tune back in for Day 2. Until then, enjoy a fun twist to the welcome video done by Remko Rinkema:

Holz Flops the World in Five-Bet Pot, But Doesn't Win

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

Doug Polk raised to 9,500 from the button, and Mustapha Kanit three-bet to 25,500 from the small blind. Fedor Holz, who made quite the comeback earlier today, cold four-bet to 65,000. Polk quickly folded, but Kanit bumped up the action one more time by making it 101,000. Holz called in position, and the two of them saw a flop in an already huge pot.

The flop came down {10-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, and Kanit bet out 58,000 with around 120,000 behind. Holz shoved all in and Kanit made the call.

Kanit: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Holz: {9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

The flop came about as good as they could come for Holz who hit a pair, flush draw, and backdoor straight draw. For Holz, Kanit had about the best hand in this spot possible: two overs and a gut shot.

The {8-Spades} on the turn was of no real influence, and you could see the tension grow on both of their faces.

The {Q-Clubs} on the river was anything but a blank and Kanit secured his double up. A composed Holz cut out 180,500 to sent to his neighbor while Kanit fist pumped towards one of the railers, but didn't cheer too loud.

"Make sure you mention that I started this all," said Doug Polk.

"Make sure you mention that he mentioned wanting it mentioned," laughed Olivier Busquet.

Busquet and Polk got into a fun little raising war concerning the mentions, but we'll just leave it at that.

Seiver Doubles in Seven-Way Hand

Level 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Some big action just went down over on Table 1, and Jorryt van Hoof got up from the table to fill us in on the details.

Fabian Quoss opened from under the gun and van Hoof was the first one to call. Vanessa Selbst over-called, and Scott Seiver called behind her. All other players joined in as well, and everyone saw the {10-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop.

Both blinds checked to the initial raiser and Quoss continued with a bet of 25,000. Selbst made the call, and Seiver raised to 55,000. Action folded back to Quoss, and he made the call. Now Selbst reraised to 125,000. Action on Scott Seiver who pushed all in for 31,000 more. Quoss thought about it for some time before folding, and then Selbst somewhat reluctantly made the call.

Vanessa Selbst: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Scott Seiver: {J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Selbst was looking for a queen to bust her neighbor, but wouldn't get it. The {3-Clubs} fell on the turn and the {6-Diamonds} completed the board on the river. Selbst still has a more than decent stack with 470,000 in chips, and Seiver plays a comparable stack with 450,000.

Van Hoof Doubles Through Metaal

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Govert Metaal and Jorryt van Hoof
Govert Metaal and Jorryt van Hoof

After some raises and re raises, Metaal and Van Hoof both got their chips in. Van Hoof, seated under the gun, had {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and Metaal had to do with "just" {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}.

The {Q-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Hearts} board didn't improve anyone, and Van Hoof doubled his 196,000 stack.

"I saw you had under two hundred" said Metaal. "Yeah, just a cooler right" answered Van Hoof.

Selbst Hits It Big

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Vanessa Selbst

There was a lot of commotion on Table 1, and a lot of people were watching as the biggest pot of the tournament was being played. Not just press and players from other tables, but late registrants awaiting their table like Ole Schemion and Tony Gregg were there as well looking on.

Apparently, Vanessa Selbst in the big blind had squeezed before the flop, and received calls in no less than four spots, according to one player on the rail. The {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop got checked through, Govert Metaal told us.

We saw a 34,000 go into the pot from Selbst and Holz once the {K-Diamonds} hit the turn, the other players got out of the way. The river brought the {J-Diamonds} and Selbst checked. Holz, who was seated in early position, bet out a mere 50,800 after some hefty thinking.

Action was on Vanessa Selbst, who pushed all in. After the dealer was done counting, it turned out to be 211,300 total.

Holz again took his time, and rightfully so as it was for a huge pot. Minutes went by without anything happening, and eventually Holz made the call.

Selbst turned over her {4-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, and Holz mucked. As it was an all in for Selbst, Holz's cards were eventually turned on their back and everyone saw that the young German player had called with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for top pair and top kicker.

Right after the hand, the staff reseated Holz, so he won't get his chips back from Selbst anytime soon. He does still have 65,000 to play with.

Welcome to the Kickoff of Season 11 and the 100th EPT Event in History!

"It's hot, it's sunny, the water's perfect, we're in a city brimming with style and culture, and we're going to spend the whole weekend indoors!"

That was Caroline Flack's opening monologue on the premier broadcast of the EPT, which debuted way back in 2004. While very much has changed over the years on the European Poker Tour, a few things remain the same — the weather is beautiful, the city is buzzing, and the EPT has once again embarked on Barcelona.

It's been exactly nine years and 11 months since the first-ever EPT event was held right here in Barcelona that saw Alexander Stevic conquer the field, and just look how far the tour has come. Today marks the kickoff of Season 11 on the EPT, but more importantly this is the 100th event ever for the prestigious tour, and it's only fitting to host it right back here in the City of Gaudi.

The festivities will begin with a bang, as today marks the start of EPT Barcelona's €50,000 Super High Roller event. While much more than just a weekend will be spent indoors, this event truly marks the kickoff of the 2014-2015 poker season. Since the completion of the World Series of Poker's summer schedule with the setting of the 2014 November Nine, players, fans, and industry members have had some downtime, but the break is over. For the next 10 days, Casino Barcelona will play host to several marquee poker tournaments as millions and millions of Euros shall be awarded.

The €50,000 Super High Roller was added to EPT Barcelona's schedule in Season 9, and it was Dan Smith who took the inaugural title and earned €962,925. Smith defeated a field of 64 entries (54 unique entries with nine reentries) and topped a final table that included JC Alvarado, Mike Watson, Ilari Sahamies, Mike McDonald, Erik Seidel, and Talal Shakerchi.

The event returned for Season 10, but the field size dropped to 51 entries (40 unique entries with 11 reentries). Taking home the €771,300 first-place prize was Vitaly Lunkin after he defeated Seidel heads up. Steve O'Dwyer, Mike McDonald, David Benefield, Ole Schemion, and Fabian Quoss were also at the final table.

Notably, Seidel and McDonald earned back-to-back final tables in the event and could notch a third in a row this year. It is likely that both players will be in the field, and Seidel was seen arriving at the Barcelona airport on Sunday afternoon.

This year's event will kick off on Monday at noon local time in Barcelona, with each player beginning with 250,000 in tournament chips. The blinds will begin at 500/1,000/100, and there are eight 60-minute levels of play on the Day 1 schedule.

That means things are almost ready to roll, and we'll be right back shortly with the starting coverage of the €50,000 Super High Roller from the EPT's first stop of Season 11. Stay tuned!
