Alex Tikhoniouk Leads After Day 2 of the PokerStars.fr EPT 11 Deauville Main Event

Day 2 of the PokerStars.fr EPT 11 Deauville Main Event started with 335 players remaining and Frenchman Guillaume Darcourt leading the way. With the late registration still open until the action restarted at noon, another three players exchanged €5,300 for 30,000 chips to boost the overall attendance to 592 entries in total and 338 remaining. Tournament staff announced that the top 87 spots will get paid with the eventual winner receiving €543,700 as well as the EPT trophy and Slyde watch on Feb. 7.

The action kicked off with a bang Tuesday as Michal Mrakes lost his top 10 stack to Andrius Bielskis within the first half an hour of play. Mrakes and 64 others were eliminated in the first two levels, including Gaelle Baumann, Vojtech Ruzicka, former EPT champion David Vamplew, Christophe Benzimra, Ihar Soika and Philippe Ktorza.

Vicky Coren-Mitchell, the first and only two-time EPT champion, will have to wait for another chance to win her third. She failed to improve with {K-Spades} {Q-Spades} against the {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} of 2013 PCA champion Dimitar Danchev. Michael Tureniec busted to Rube Visser in a battle of former EPT winners when the Dutchman improved with {A-Spades} {J-Clubs} to better the Swede's {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades}. PokerStars Team Online Pros Vicente Delgado and Gabriel Nassif were equally unfortunate, as was PokerStars Team Pro Julien Brecard.

Three former EPT Deauville Main Event winners returned to the tables but only one would make it through. Both Lucien Cohen and Jake Cody were eliminated on the feature table: Cody was trying to bluff Clement Genon-Catalot on a board of {4-Clubs} {5-Spades} {6-Spades} {8-Spades} {8-Hearts} but the Frenchman called his river shove with {Q-Spades} {J-Spades} and the Brit's {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} was no good. Cohen then lost with pocket sixes against pocket jacks to only leave Remi Castaignon behind. The Frenchman turned a full house early on with {Q-Spades} {10-Diamonds} and Damien Lhommeau got his stack in drawing dead with {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} for a gutshot and flush draw. Castaignon would end the day with 175,600 chips.

In the very last hand of the day Fabrice Soulier lost a coin flip with {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} against the {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} of Simon Ravnsbaek, who had bought in just before Day 2 kicked off and ran up the stack to 197,600. Once everyone bagged and tagged their chips, only 138 players remained and Alex Tikhoniouk claimed the lead with 312,600 chips. The Irishman is playing his first ever EPT event and was even down to only four big blinds early today before spinning it up.

Tikhoniuk is closely followed by former EPT champion and EPT 11 London runner-up Kevin MacPhee (308,300) and Robert Schulz with 296,900. Other big stacks include PokerStars Team Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (281,500), Carlo Savinelli (275,400), Benjamin Pollak (275,000), Nicolau Villa-Lobos (230,600), PokerStars Team Pro Jan Heitmann (199,000) and start-of-the-day chip leader Guillaume Darcourt (172,600). Eugene Katchalov started as one of the shortest stacks and doubled up several times to claim 137,000 whereas fellow Team Pro Marcin Horecki (112,000), PokerStars sponsored player Dominik Panka (45,800) and Team PokerStars Pro Online (37,500) also advanced.

The action will resume at 12 p.m. local time with blinds at 1,500/3,000 and a running ante of 400. The level duration increases from 75 to 90 minutes on Day 3, and the money is expected to be reached during the five levels of play. Stay tuned to the PokerNews live coverage to see who lands on the bubble!

Fabrice Soulier got his stack of 48,400 all in the very last hand of the day with {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} and had a coin flip against the {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} of Simon Ravnsbaek over on the feature table. The board ran out {5-Spades} {10-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {9-Spades} and the EPT 10 Vienna High Roller champion won't be returning for Day 3 tomorrow.

Gabriel Nassif was down to his last 35,000 chips when he got the stack in with {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} against the {J-Clubs} {J-Spades} of Miroslav Alilovic. The PokerStars Team Online Pro turned a flush draw on top of his over cards but couldn't get there anymore.

Tureniec Busts to Visser in Battle of EPT Champions

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Michael Tureniec
Michael Tureniec

Owain Carey opened and Ruben Visser on the button a couple positions down made the call. Michael Tureniec over called from the big blind. The flop came {Q-Hearts}{Q-}{5-Hearts} and Tureniec checked to Carey who c-bet 6,000. Visser now raised to 15,900 and Carey made the call after Tureniec folded.

Carey check called a bet of 22,000 on the {4-Hearts}-turn. The {4-} on the river made for a board with two pair, and Carey checked again. Visser bet 35,000 and Carey folded.

Not much later Carey opened to 4,200. Ruben Visser made it 9,600 and action folded back to Carey. The Brit four bet to 18,000, but folded to Visser's all in.

It was then up to Visser again and he raised to 4,500. Tureniec moved all in for 50,000 from one seat over and was eventually called by the Dutchman after some consideration.

Tureniec: {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades}
Visser: {A-Spades} {J-Hearts}

The {2-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {4-Spades} flop was still good for the Swede in the battle of former EPT champions, but the {J-Diamonds} turn saw Visser improve. Only a queen could save Tureniec, yet the {10-Hearts} river was a brick and sent him to the rail.

Jake Cody Eliminated at the Feature Table

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

If you're watching the live stream you already know for quite some time, but we just found out recently. While we're at the tournament floor right here in Deauville, digital railbirds like you knew before we did, how cool is that?

It turns out Jake Cody is out after clashing in a huge pot with French player Clement Genon-Catalot.

The stream cut back to the feature table when the two were already looking at a flop of {4-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}. Genon-Catalot in the small blind had 8,500 in front of him and Cody in early position was calling.

The {8-Spades} hit the turn and Genon-Catalot looked up a bit before checking. Cody cut out 16,200 and slid the chips forward. Genon-Catalot didn't waste much time before calling.

The turn had brought a third flush card and made for a four way straight on the board. The {8-Hearts} on the river made the board even more interesting pairing it and making full houses possible all of the sudden.

Genon-Catalot again checked. Cody thought for just a bit before announcing all in. for 58,800 The dealer repeated Cody's words but even before she was done doing so, Genon-Catalot had already called.

Cody tabled {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} for a complete bluff, Genon-Catalot had the goods holding {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}. Jake Cody won't be a two-time EPT (Deauville) champion this time, we'll see him in Malta next month most likely.

Visser Doubles With Kings

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Ruben Visser
Ruben Visser

Bartolomeo-Fulvio Tato opened for 4,400 from middle position. Right next to him was EPT London champ Ruben Visser and he made it 10,200 to go. Action folded back to Tato who added the 5,800 to make the call.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and the Italian checked to Visser. Visser bet out 12,300 and Tato made a min raise to 24,600. Visser shoved for 51,900 and Tato made the call after some tanking.

Visser showed {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} giving Tato the news he had some catching up to do with his {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. Help wouldn't come as the {7-Hearts} on the turn and {5-Diamonds} on the river were proper blanks.

Czuczor Goes from Zero to Hero

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Evangelos Tsairis
Evangelos Tsairis

Within the last two consecutive hands before the break, Marton Czuczor went from a short stack to an above average stack when doubling and tripling up. First he open shoved for 25,900 with {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts} and won the flip against {A-Spades} {J-Spades} when the {7-Diamonds} on the flop made things clear.

The last hand before the break he raised, Arvydas Merfeldas three-bet and Evangelos Tsairis four-bet to 14,100 from the button. Czuczor moved all in for 55,800 and Merfeldas reshoved for 131,100. Tsairis asked for a quick count of the second all in and then called.

Czuczor: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}
Merfeldas: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}
Tsairis: {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}

The board ran out {4-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {3-Spades} {8-Diamonds} and gave Czuczor a huge spin and great feeling to head into the break with.

Domination Nation! 242 French in Main Event (41% of Field)

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

More than 41% of the 592-strong field in the EPT Deauville Main Event come from France. There were 242 French players, way ahead of any other country. Italy is number 2 here in Deauville with 34 players. There are 32 Russians, 31 Brits, 30 Germans and 21 Dutch.

The following countries have only one representative so we hope people are being friendly to them: Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Chile, Egypt, Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Mexico, Monaco and Tunisia. Others with 2+ players are: Israel, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Canada, China, Ireland, Norway, Luxembourg, Serbia and Switzerland.

No Three-Time Champion This Time Around

Victoria Coren-Mitchell

Minutes after the third level of the day started, Vicky Coren-Mitchell had the all in triangle in front of her after shoving for about 13,000 in chips from the cutoff. Dimitar Danchev in the small blind was the one calling.

Coren-Mitchell was looking for help with her {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} as Danchev had brought {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for the confrontation. The {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades} board at no point made things exciting, and Coren-Mitchell made her way to the exit.

"It was nice playing with you. Have a nice day" she said gracefully while standing up to make her way out the door.
