Over the course of the next two hours, they played down to 41 players left in the game. Watson was chip leader going into the final level, but Malinov might not even have made the final day if not for his fours holding in a huge race for his life against ace-queen early in the 2nd last level.

There are four more chances for players to bag a stack for Day 2, which runs on April 18th. Day 1b goes ahead on the 13th, with 1c on the 15th, 1d on the 17th, and 1e early on the 18th. Stay tuned here at PokerNews for all action from 2021 GG Spring Festival.

Julien Stuer raised to 26.4K from the middle, and Sami Kelopuro called from the big blind. Kelopuro check-called for 48K on the {j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop. The turn was {2-Hearts} and Kelopuro check-shoved enough to put his opponent all in after a bet of 185,100. Stuer called it off, but it left the Finn with under 2,000 behind.

Julien Stuer: {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Sami Kelopuro: {9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

Board: {j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

By the turn they both had two pair, and Kelopuro couldn't recover. He was all in the next hand and busted. Elsewhere Francisco "VaPaCooler" Benitez also busted.

Not Your Everyday Set-Over-Set-Over-Set

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Well, the best hand won!
Well, the best hand won!

Marc "Face-O" Carola raised to 8,000 in middle position and Aliaksei Boika, who made his third Super MILLION$ final table in a row earlier this week, three-bet shoved 106,193 from the small blind. Ankush Mandavia cold-called the shove from the big blind and Carola called all in for 67,372 to create a three-way showdown.

Marc "Face-O" Carola: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Aliaksei Boika: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Ankush Mandavia: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Boika smashed the {2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop to hit top set and take a commanding lead in the hand. However, the {q-Diamonds} on the turn was the two outer Carola needed and he took over for the main pot.

Two outs could still win it for Mandavia and sure enough, the {k-Hearts} was burned and turned to turn the best hand at the start into the best hand at the finish as well.

A Spectacular Aces vs. Kings vs. Queens

Level 10 : 1,400/2,800, 350 ante
Andersson spikes it on the river
Andersson spikes it on the river

Setups in poker come in all forms and shapes, but none of them are as infamous as picking up a monster like pocket kings preflop, only to run it smack dab into the blades. Add the ladies in the mix and you get one of the biggest — and most dreaded — coolers in all of poker.

The three monster pairs were just dealt in the Main Event between Joshua McCully, Joakim Andersson, and Julien Martini. It was the latter who opened to 7,000 in early position. Behind him, Andersson made it 19.600 to go and action folded to McCully in the big blind.

McCully four-bet to 51,800, Martini five-bet shoved all in for 131,547, Andersson came over the top for 359,869, and McCully called all in for 308,609 to create a monster pot of over 800k in chips.

Julien Martini: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Joakim Andersson: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Joshua McCully: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

McCully had both players covered and was looking at a possible 900k stack but the {q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop gave Martini top boat to take the lead. The {3-Hearts} on the turn changed nothing but Andersson drilled the {k-Clubs} on the river to improve to a bigger boat, sending Martini to the rail and crippling McCully in the process.

Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

Christian Jeppsson raised to 5,280 in middle position and Bioderma founder and high roller legend Jean-Noel "OscarBrown" Thorel three-bet small to 13,560 in the cutoff. Jeppsson called to see a {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop fall.

Jeppsson checked and Thorel bet 10,930. Jeppsson check-raised to 30,374, Thorel shoved all in for 294,394 and Jeppsson called all in for 93,920.

Christian Jeppsson: {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Jean-Noel "OscarBrown" Thorel: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Thorel was about a 3:1 favorite with his set and locked it up on the {10-Clubs} turn, rendering the {8-Clubs} river moot.

Shortly before the break, Timothy Nuter raised to 4,600 in the cutoff, Kenneth "Forrest_Li" Edberg three-bet to 19,200 from the small blind and Nuter called. The {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop saw checks from both players. On the {a-Hearts} turn, Edberg bet 14,000 and Nuter called.

The river was the {q-Spades} and Edberg checked. Nuter shoved all in for 87,830 and Edberg called directly with {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} for the rivered full house. It turned out to be the perfect river card, as Nuter rolled over {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for the inferior Broadway.
