Loukas Michael Wins the HPO Season 3 Charles Town Regional Main Event! ($35,803)

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
HPO Charles Town Champion Loukas Michael
HPO Charles Town Champion Loukas Michael

Loukas Michael took down the Hollywood Poker Open Season 3 Charles Town Regional Main Event at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in Charles Town, West Virginia, early Monday morning. The car dealer from Tysons Corner, Virginia, bested a field of 118 entries en route to winning a $35,803 first-place prize and a $2,500 seat in the HPO Championship Event at M Resort Casino and Spa in Las Vegas this June.

The second and final day of the event began with just 12 players left on the money bubble. Short stack Lowell Turner soon busted in 12th leaving empty-handed and after Casey Glick took an 11th-place min-cash, the final table of 10 was set.

Michael actually started the final table with just two players below him on the leaderboard. One of those players was an extremely short stacked Steven Gurney-Goldman, who won the HPO Grantville title last month, and he doubled through Michael early on to start what looked to be a comeback for the ages. In fact, as Friedrich Neunkirchner busted 10th, Gurney-Goldman quickly started moving up the ranks and building a contending stack in an attempt to become the first player ever to win two HPO titles.

Mike Axen had the lead before he snap-called a river shove from Chris Yeary in a huge pot with top two, giving away that lead when Yeary showed a flush. A few hands later, he was out ninth. Eight-handed play lasted a good few hours with Tommy Ingram climbing the counts before he was forced to to give up on a big pot with Gurney-Goldman and called his stack off with the {8-Spades}{9-Diamonds} when Michael shoved the {K-Spades}{k-Clubs}, busting in eighth place soon after.

After dinner, start-of-day chip leader Carl Garland, who played very few hands and never got anything going, busted seventh before a massive hand played out between Gurney-Goldman and Yeary. With about 90,000 in the middle on a {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{J-Spades} flop, Yeary checked-raised Gurney-Goldman, but could not get him to fold. They both checked the {7-Spades} turn, but when the {7-Diamonds} river came down, Yeary pushed in. Gurney-Goldman snap-called with two jacks and a full house and Yeary could only show pocket sixes, bowing out sixth.

Gurney-Goldman moved into the lead and soon had half the chips in play as Chris Grove lost a race to bust fifth. However, fortunes changed fast and Ken Moore soon doubled through Gurney-Goldman to take the lead, eventually busting him fourth when Gurney-Goldman shoved top pair of aces into Moore's nut straight. Moore was the man during three-handed play, but when Ronald McDonald busted third running the {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs} into Michael's {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}, Moore and Michael entered heads-up play dead even.

It didn't take long before Michael grabbed a 2-1 chip lead with some well-timed aggression and decent cards. Finally, Moore, who also finished fourth at HPO Grantville earlier this season, five-bet shoved the {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}, and Michael picked him off with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. Michael held on to win it all in dominating fashion.

That's all she wrote for the PokerNews Live Reporting team from Charles Town. Next up for the Hollywood Poker Open is the last stop of the Regional Season in Columbus, Ohio, with the Regional Main Event set to begin May 23 and our team will surely see you there.

Steven Gurney-Goldman raised the button and Ken Moore defended his big blind.

The flop came {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Moore fired out 100,000. Gurney-Goldman called and the turn came the {2-Clubs}. Moore checked, Gurney-Goldman pushed all in and Moore snapped him off with {4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} having turned the nut straight.

Gurney-Goldman had {A-Spades}{6-Spades} and there will be no second HPO title for him here tonight after the {2-Diamonds} river sent him out fourth.

Moore Doubles Into The Lead

Ken Moore
Ken Moore

Steven Gurney-Goldman opened for 55,000, Ken Moore three-bet and Gurney-Goldman four-bet shoved.

Moore called all for his tournament life and some 560,000 with {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}. Gurney-Goldman was on {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and looked good to take control three-handed after the {9-Spades}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop missed Moore.

However, Moore hit both the {Q-Spades} turn and {A-Clubs} river to double into the lead and cut Gurney-Goldman in half.

Chris Grove

Chris Grove made it 35,000 and Ronald McDonald called. Ken Moore then bumped it to 95,000 and after Grove shoved it in, McDonald folded.

Moore made the call with {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} setting up a classic race against Grove's {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. The board ran out {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}{k-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{2-Spades} leaving Moore with a full house and Grove with very few chips.

He got them in the next hand with {Q-Spades}{4-Diamonds} against Moore's {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and lost the 60/40 on a {10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{8-Clubs} run out to end his run fifth.

Chris Yeary

With about 90,000 in the middle on a {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{J-Spades} flop heads-up with Steven Gurney-Goldman, Chris Yeary checked.

Gurney-Goldman made it 45,000 and Yeary check-raised, making it 100,000 more. Gurney-Goldman called and they both checked the {7-Spades} turn. The dealer dropped the {7-Diamonds} river down on the felt and Yeary jammed it in.

Gurney-Goldman snap-called with {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} having found a full house on the river and Yeary's {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} two pair was crushed.

Having him just barely covered, Gurney-Goldman moved into chip boss position as Yeary hit the road.

Chris Grove tanked for a good four minutes after Loukas Michael open-shoved the small blind into his big blind for some 280,000.

Eventually he made the call with {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}, but was dominated versus Michael's {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Michael doubled up after the {5-Spades}{9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{8-Spades} board brought no surprises and he's now on top of the chip counts.

Carl Garland limped the small blind and Chris Grove checked his option.

Garland then check-shoved the last of his chips and Grove snap-called with {J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Garland held {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and busted after the {4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} run out left him with just one pair to Grove's two.

Tommy Ingram

A hand or two after losing a big pot versus Steven Gurney-Goldman, folding to a shove after putting a 120,000-chip bet in on the river, Tommy Ingram opened to a whopping 60,000 from the button.

Loukas Michael shoved from the big blind and Ingram called it off with {8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. Michael had {K-Spades}{k-Clubs} and left Ingram with just a few chips and his chair after the {4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} board ran out.

The next hand Ingram got it in with {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}, but ran into Ken Moore's {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}. They both made a club flush, but Moore's was best.
