Donald McArthur Wins Hollywood Poker Open Tunica Regional Main Event ($17,100)!

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Donald McArthur
Donald McArthur

Donald McArthur came into Day 2 of Hollywood Poker Open Tunica Regional Main Event as the big chip leader with 370,000, nearly double second-place Mark Kehrees. He put that stack to good use, making short work of his remaining competitors to wrap up the tournament in less than three hours. For his win, McArthur claimed $17,100 in prize money and a voucher worth a $2,500 seat in the HPO season finale in Las Vegas this summer.

McArthur, a postal worker, said the win ends years of final table frustrations.

"I've come down here and made a bunch of final tables," said McArthur, who came in with just $1,571 in recorded tournament cashes. "One time, I had more chips than the other nine combined, and I was still the first one out."

This time, luck seemed to be in his favor, right from the first elimination as action folded to him in the small blind, giving him the pot and the last of Chris Trotter's blinded-off stack. Sadly, Trotter left on Day 1 with a massive stack after experiencing health issues, ultimately blinding off in sixth place on the money bubble.

Nancy Regan bowed out shortly thereafter in fifth when she put in her last thee big blinds with {q-}{j-} and was unable to improve against Scott Mauer's {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}.

McArthur held about half of the chips in play four handed, but had slipped down a bit when a key pot unfolded between he and Mauer. A limped pot and three flop checks led to a {10-Spades}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} board on fourth street, which is when Kehrees bet out the minimum of 4,000 from the small blind. Mauer made it 14,000, and McArthur cold-called, while Kehrees folded. Mauer bet 26,000 more on the {10-Clubs} river, and McArthur shoved for about 85,000 more. Mauer quickly called with {9-}{7-} for a straight, but it was no good as McArthur held {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for tens full.

McArthur then picked up kings on the button and called Kehrees' three-bet shove, holding against the {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}. The kings held, and that set up a heads-up match with James McCauley, who had about 170,000 to McArthur's 730,000 as the blinds moved up to 2,500/5,000/500. Twenty minutes later, it was all over, as McCauley jammed his last 54,000 with {a-}{k-}, and McArthur called with {8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. Live cards improved to a straight draw as {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Clubs} hit the flop, and there was no stopping McArthur today as he binked the {6-Clubs} for a winning straight on the turn. McCauley took home $11,250.

"I was hitting everything today," McArthur said with a smile. "It made up for all those other final tables."

Next up for the HPO will be a stop in Grantville, Pennsylvania, starting March 26 and running through April 5. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there for the Regional Main Event April 4-5, and we hope to see you there. For complete schedule information on that event, please click here.

James McCauley Eliminated in 2nd Place ($11,250)

James McCauley

James McCauley pushed all in from the button, and Donald McArthur called.

McArthur: {8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
McCauley: {a-}{k-}

A flop of {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Clubs} meant McArthur picked up a straight draw, and his hot run continued as he turned McCauley dead with a {6-Clubs} for a straight. The {q-Spades} was the meaningless river.

Mark Kehrees - 3rd Place

Donald McArthur opened to 24,000 on the button, and Mark Kehrees shoved for about 120,000 only to get snap-called.

McArthur: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Kehrees: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Kehrees was in a bad spot, and the {10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{8-Clubs} didn't help.

"Not my day," he said. "Club to make it interesting."

That's exactly what happened as a {2-Clubs} fell, but the {8-Diamonds} river was a brick, and McArthur has a commanding lead heads up.

In a limped pot, the board read {10-Spades}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} after everyone checked the flop, and Mark Kehrees bet 4,000. Big blind Scott Mauer made it 14,000, and Donald McArthur cold-called, while Kehrees dumped his hand. The river brought the {10-Clubs}, and Mauer bet 26,000.

"I'm all in," McArthur said after about 45 seconds.

Mauer called fairly quickly, and Kehrees turned over {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for tens full. Mauer showed he'd taken a bad beat as he held {9-}{7-} for a turned straight.

Scott Mauer opened for 6,000, and Nancy Regan put in her last 10,000. James McCauley called in the big blind, as did Mauer. The two players checked down the {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Spades} run out, and Regan showed {q-}{j-}. Both McCauley's {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and Mauer's {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} had that beat, with the pot going to Mauer.

Welcome to Day 2 of Hollywood Poker Open Tunica Regional Main Event

HPO Tunica
HPO Tunica

With Day 1 in the books at Hollywood Poker Open Tunica Regional Main Event, just six players remain. They'll be convening shortly for Day 2 here in the Southern comfort of Mississippi, just 45 minutes from Memphis.

When action begins at noon local time, Donald McArthur will be the man to catch, as he bagged 370,000 after 14 levels of Day 1 play. Trailing him will be Mark Kehrees (191,000), Scott Mauer (175,000), James McCauley (123,500), Nancy Regan (31,000), and Chris Trotter (9,500). One of the players will be walking away empty-handed, as the tournament is currently on the money bubble. We hope to see Trotter make a triumphant and healthy return to at least go down with a fight after leaving ill and blinding off for the final four hours of Day 1.

Blinds will be 1,500/3,000/500 when the tournament resumes, with 60-minute levels allowing plenty of play. We'll be on hand to see what goes down here in Tunica, so stay tuned to see who the next HPO champion will be.
