Joe Ebanks Wins Hollywood Poker Open Columbus Regional Main Event

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante

Joe Ebanks reached a deal with Jeremy Detamore before he became the new Hollywood Poker Open champion, winning the HPO Columbus $1,115 Regional Main Event at the stop and earning $49,928 in first-place prize money.

"I got crazy lucky," said Ebanks in regards to the hand he busted Chris Meyers on in seventh place, which helped propel him to victory.

On that hand, Meyers and Ebanks were all in preflop for a pot worth 1.8 million in chips. Meyers had the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} against the {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} of Ebanks. Ebanks flopped a Broadway straight when the dealer put out the {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, and dodged a flush draw on the turn and a chop on the river to knock out Meyers. Meyers was one of five players he busted at the final table.

Jeff Gregg was one of those five players, and Ebanks busted him when he flopped a king with the {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} against Gregg's {a-Spades}{10-Spades}. Ebanks also eliminated fourth-place finisher Greg Yeager when he had the {j-Spades}{10-Spades} against Yeager's {k-}{k-} and flopped trips before turning a full house.

"I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to call in those spots," said Ebanks. "My hands should have equity against their ranges."

Ebanks busted Bill Khourie in third place after he made a flush on a board that showed a five-card straight and got paid off. He then turned a straight against Khourie when the two were all in preflop a few hands later.

The win is the fifth tournament win of Ebanks career and his lifetime earnings are approaching $3.2 million, according to Hendon Mob.

In addition to the first-place prize money and trophy, Ebanks was awarded a $2,500 seat to the season-ending HPO Championship Event at the M Resort in Las Vegas. That event will take place June 23-26.

Jeremy Detamore Eliminated in 2nd Place ($46,680)

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Jeremy Detamore
Jeremy Detamore

Jeremy Detamore decided not to take the first deal he was offered. Instead he played for about half a level and got all in with {a-}{k-} versus Joe Ebanks' {5-}{5-}. He won the hand with a straight and ended up adding $4,000 more to the deal and that was good enough to call it a night.

Detamore satellited into the tournament for $125 and parlayed that into the Day 1a chip lead and a cool $46,660.

Bill Khourie Eliminated in Third Place ($24,900)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Bill Khourie
Bill Khourie

In two hands, Joe Ebanks was able to finish off Bill Khourie and gain control of almost 80% of the chips in play.

The action started when Ebanks and Khourie were heads up after a 75,000 preflop raise. Ebanks called and the two saw the {6-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop. Ebanks checked and Khourie bet 80,000. Ebanks called.

The turn was the {3-Clubs} and Ebanks checked again. This time Khourie bet 140,000 and Ebanks called.

The river was the {5-Spades} and Ebanks bet 350,000 into the board that was a six-high straight. Khourie called and Ebanks showed him the bad news. Ebanks had a flush with the {q-Spades}{10-Spades}. Khourie was slightly annoyed and it appeared he didn't see the possible flush.

That left Khourie pretty short and the two players got it all in when Ebanks was in the small blind and Khourie in the big. Ebanks had {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} versus the {a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} of Khourie. But like most of the day, Ebanks can't miss and he turned a straight on the {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{5-Hearts} board.

Khourie earned $24,900 for his third place finish. Ebanks has now eliminated the last six players and has a massive chip lead over Jeremy Detamore entering heads up play.

Ebanks Again and Again: Greg Yeager Eliminated in 4th Place ($17,679)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Greg Yeager
Greg Yeager

Joe Ebanks has more than half the chips in play with three left. He has the chips to call most of the all ins and he has done so two hands in a row.

On this hand it was Greg Yeager who Ebanks sent home. Yeager got all in preflop with {k-}{k-} for 267,000. Ebanks called with {j-Spades}{10-Spades}. If you haven't already guess what the flop looked like here it is, {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and, as if that weren't enough, the turn was the {j-Clubs}. The river was no help to Yeager who ends the tournament in fourth place.

The Ebanks Show Continues: Jeff Gregg Eliminated in 5th Place ($13,695)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jeff Gregg
Jeff Gregg

Jeff Gregg shoved all in for 380,000 and Joe Ebanks called.

This time Ebanks was behind with {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} against the {a-Spades}{10-Spades} of Gregg. However, Ebanks has been running super hot and the flop came in his favor when a king hit. When the board was completed {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, Ebanks had busted yet another player.

Khourie Loses a Little

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Bill Khourie
Bill Khourie

Bill Khourie has continued to open more often than the rest of the final table. On the last two hands, he lost about 100,000 to Jeremy Detamore and 100,000 to Joe Ebanks.

  • Khourie opened to 45,000 from the small blind and Detamore defended from the big blind. The flop came {4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and Khourie led for 50,000. Detamore called. The players checked the remaining streets as the turn and river came {7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Detamore took the pot with pocket sixes.
  • Khourie opened the next hand on the button for 40,000 and Ebanks defended from the big blind. The flop was {q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and both players checked. The turn was the {4-Clubs} and Ebanks led for 55,000. Khourie called. The river was the {8-Spades} and Ebanks led again, this time making it 130,000. Khourie folded.

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
David O'Connor
David O'Connor

David O'Connor did a lot of work today. Dipping under 40,000 and working his stack back up to over 400,000, however no one can seem to beat Joe Ebanks.

O'Connor and Ebanks got all in preflop and this time Ebanks had the best of it with {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}. O'Connor had {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

The board ran out {j-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{7-Hearts} and Ebanks sent another player home. He now has almost half the chips in play with five left.

Detamore Doubles

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jeremy Detamore
Jeremy Detamore

Bill Khourie has been pretty active and opening many of the hands at the final table. He just won a pot off Jeff Gregg with a three bet preflop. However, on this hand he called Detamore's shove with pocket sixes and was behind.

Khourie made it 45,000 and Detamore shoved for just under 400,000. Khourie called and was behind the {j-}{j-} of Detamore. Khourie's {6-}{6-} got a bit of a sweat when the board ran out {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, but he missed the gut shot and Detamore doubled up.

Not Like This: Chris Meyers Eliminated in 7th Place ($9,338)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Chris Meyers
Chris Meyers

Chris Meyers was eliminated in seventh place by Joe Ebanks. Meyers lost a massive pot when the two got all in preflop.

To start the hand, both players had two of the biggest stacks at the table. The action started when Meyers raised to 45,000. Ebanks was in the big blind and made it 160,000. Meyers, who was sporting a Lebron James jersey and was happy to see his team win earlier, made it 375,000. Without too much consideration, Ebanks went all in. Meyers snap called with {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and Ebanks looked to immediately regret the hand with {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}.

The regret wouldn't last long because Ebanks flopped the nuts on the {10-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} flop. Meyers still had a shot when the turn was the {5-Diamonds}, but the {6-Spades} closed the door on Meyers tournament run.

Ebanks is now approaching 2-million chips with six players remaining.
