Day 1 of the HPO Charles Town Regional Championship is in the Books

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Brian Cavaliere Ended Day 1 as the Overwhelming Chip Leader

Today the Hollywood Poker Open continued its encouraging second season of operation at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia.

When the registration information was tallied up midway through the 11-level marathon, a total of 72 entries had been recorded - setting a record in terms of turnout for an HPO $1,800 Main Event. The previous high of 67 was set two weeks ago at the St. Louis stop, proving that the new tour on the block is making waves in the poker world.

After the final hand was dealt only 22 survivors remained in contention for the title, with Brian Cavaliere bagging by far the biggest stack in the room with 181,600 chips. That number put Cavaliere well out in front of his closest competitor in Paul McCaffree, who managed to accumulate 121,600 by the end of play. Other big stacks in play include Mike Summers (106,300), David Lackey (96,500), James Boyd (95,000), Mark Castaldo (88,400), Joseph Stiers (77,100) and Michaelann Moser (76,500), and Timothy Little (71,700).

Along the way we watched 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker attempt to win back-to-back titles, as the man who started the fabled "Boom" took top honors at the HPO St. Louis Regional Championship. Despite surging to an early lead and becoming the first player to crack the 100,000 plateau, Moneymaker's fortunes turned for the worse midway through the day, and despite a miraculous one-out win to stay alive, he eventually hit the rail late in the night.

Fellow pro Lee Childs managed to avoid elimination, patiently grinding a short stack for much of the day before chipping up to his current count of 50,000 even. As the most experienced player left in the field, the 2007 WSOP Main Event final table member will be looking to win his second event of this HPO series stop, while also wrapping up the points title for the HPO Charles Town stop.

Check back with PokerNews tomorrow afternoon at 12:15 pm local time, as the remaining 22 players round the corner and sprint to the final table finish line. A champion will be crowned and seven fortunate players will make the money, with a $39,756 first-prize payout waiting for the eventual winner.

No Back-To-Back Titles for Moneymaker

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker’s final hand of the night went down just before the recent break, and the last Hollywood Poker Open Regional Championship winner was kind enough to inform us about the details as he headed out the door.

According to Moneymaker, his descent began when he made an overcall with {q-}{q-} looking to bust two shorter stacks who had moved all in before him. Moneymaker was well in front of the severe shorty’s {k-}{4-} desperation push, but Joseph Stiers had a decent enough holding with his {a-Spades}{Q-Spades}.

Alas, the flop came down {a-}{k-}{10-} to put Stiers out in front with a pair of aces, and when Moneymaker failed to find a set or a straight, he shipped about 12,500 over to the young semi-pro.

Just a few hands later it was Moneymaker’s turn to ship all in before the flop, and Stiers’ turn to make the call, with the champ’s {4-}{4-} crushed by Stier’s {Q-}{Q-}. No help arrived through five board cards, and Moneymaker headed out with a disappointing finish after surging to more than 100,000 early in the day.

Summer(s) Vacation is Over

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Michaelann Moser
Michaelann Moser

With the final board reading {6-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{q-Spades}{6-Diamonds} by the river, Mike Summers checked over to Michaelann Moser, who snap-fired a bet of 9,000 into the middle.

The pot was already chock full of orange T1,000 chips — along with medley of lower denominations — and obviously a few bets had been made and called before the river was revealed.

“Isn’t that just the sickest river card?” asked Summers to nobody in particular. “Would you have folded on the turn if I shoved?”

“What’s that?” replied Moser, almost as quickly as she bet the river. “On the turn? Yeah, I think so.”

“I call then,” said Summers with authority, appearing to have obtained the tell he was looking for.

“Call?” asked Moser. “OK... quads.”

After Moser rolled over her {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}, even Summers had to smile at the sight of her monster holding.

“Nice hand,” he said forlornly while flashing his {A-Clubs}{q-Hearts} to the table. “I guess that was the sickest turn card instead.”

A Little Dab'll Do Ya

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Timothy Little
Timothy Little

After a player opened for 2,500 in early position and another flatted from middle position, Timothy Little decided to pump it up with a three-bet to 7,500 from the hijack seat.

The original raiser came along for the ride and the caller got out of the way, leaving Little and a lone opponent to take the {9-Clubs}{q-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop.

After a check to him, Little continuation bet for 11,500 and watched as his opponent dove deep into the tank. As the man held his hands to his face and pondered his options, the seconds melted away into minutes.

“Did I run into kings here, Tim?” asked the man from across the table before apologizing for taking so long. “Sorry guys.”

After more than five minutes had passed, another player at the table opted to call the clock, and with the one-minute countdown underway the tanker tossed his hand into the muck. Little slid his cards to the dealer and traded them for a sizable pot, giving himself a bit of breathing room late on this first day of play.

After one player limped in for 1,000, and another raised it up to 3,000, we watched as Lee Childs hesitated a beat before plunking a tower of orange T1,000 chips into the middle for the three-bet.

The table quickly folded around to the original raiser, and with an experienced pro who has earned more than $1 million in his live tournament career staring him down, he wasted no time in signalling his surrender.

"Strong..." said Mike Summers, a friend of Childs who currently holds the chip lead. "I taught him that move."

Summers' Time

We just passed by a huge stack of chips neatly arranged into a castle formed with 10-chip towers.

After a quick scan of the situation, the nearly 140,000-chip pile turned out to be the property of Mike Summers, who has catapulted to the top of the leaderboard late on this first day of play.

"That's my student right there..." said Lee Childs, the experienced touring pro who specializes in tournament tutorials on the side.

With such a massive stack at his disposal, Summers has proven to be an apt student indeed.

Moneymaker Uses His One Time

Chris Moneymaker Just Spiked a One-Out Miracle on the River to Survive
Chris Moneymaker Just Spiked a One-Out Miracle on the River to Survive

We heard an excited murmuring over at Chris Moneymaker's table, and the 2003 WSOP Main Event champion could be seen pacing near his seat, hand on his head in a pose reminiscent of his many final table sweats during that miraculous run 10 years ago.

"One out huh?" asked Moneymaker with exasperation. "Hit a one outter."

To all the world it appeared Moneymaker had been done in by an especially dirty beat, but after a quick scan of the situation it turned out that one-out save came through for the champ.

According to Moneymaker and tablemate Timothy Little, the HPO Ambassador four-bet jammed with {K-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} and was called in one spot by {A-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

Flop: {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}

The flop put Moneymaker on the brink of elimination, coming ace high to put his premium pocket pair in a deep hole. With a king already face up on the table, Moneymaker was dead to the case cowboy. The turn came down {5-Spades} to keep Moneymaker on the brink of elimination, but when the {k-Spades} arrived on the river, the muted celebration of a pro who has been there before began.

"I haven't been lucky at all yet in this thing, had to happen once," said the champ with a smile, obviously savoring the moment.

Bradley Yazici Back in the Game

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Bradley Yazici
Bradley Yazici

After taking down top honors at the 2014 Hollywood Poker Open Grantville Regional Championship in early in March, Bradley Yazici is here today looking for his second big score of the month.

Yazici was riding a short stack during the first few orbits after dinner break, but eventually he woke up with {j-Clubs}{j-Spades} and watched as four players limped in for 500 each.

With the action on him, Yazici wasted no time in heaping his stack forward, and his last 7,950 chips were put at risk. A lone limper looked Yazici up with {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, but the board ran out clean, coming {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} to keep the fishhooks out in front.

Yazici doubled back to just over the starting stack, giving him 40 big blinds with which to mount an attempt at his second HPO Regional Championship title of the season.
