Joey Couden Rallies to Win HPO Columbus Regional Championship ($60,827)!

Level 25 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Joey Couden
Joey Couden

Facing a 7-1 chip disadvantage during heads-up play, Joey Couden never panicked. "You can't ever let losing enter your mind," Couden said after emerging victorious at the 2014 Hollywood Poker Open Columbus Regional Main Event.

"It's a poison," he continued. "I was born to win this tournament. I've been playing in the Columbus area since I was 15," the Columbus native added.

With the $60,827 he collected for the win, Couden moved above the half-million dollar mark in career live tournament earnings. "I'll be playing some at the World Series," he said about his immediate future plans.

Couden outlasted a record-setting HPO field of 126 players that created a prize pool of $202,754. The 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, Chris Moneymaker, would be among those who would play. Moneymaker was looking to win his second HPO Regional title of the year, but would be eliminated early on in Day 1 and ultimately that would be enough for the HPO Ambassador.

At the end of play on the first day, there were 29 players who would make the cut and return to try and make the money on Day 2. Only 13 would get paid so there was work aplenty for those still in the field. Nick Guagenti would surge to the top of the leader board early on by knocking out two players in one hand.

Local top poker professional Shawn Cunix would make a deep run, but he would end up falling just short of making the money when he was eliminated in 17th place.

The bubble was quick and painless, and it was David Westfall who would get the dubious honors of finishing one short of the money. After the bubble burst, Nick Guagenti would get his chips in on a draw and would not improve to finish in 13th place for $4,055.

Couden would start his run to the final two when he hit runner-runner nut flush to take down a big pot. Not to be outdone, his heads-up foe, John Michalak, would top the one-million chip mark by hitting a flush of his own to eliminate PJ Grace in seventh place ($9,124).

Scott Dehm ended Day 1 as the chip leader, and he would make good use of those chips for most of Day 2 before being eliminated in sixth place ($11,151). There would be some tension between the eventual final two in a hand that saw the elimination of Jimmie Adams in fifth place ($13,483).

Couden eliminated Christopher Collins in third place ($24,330) with two pair and heads-up play started with him holding a slight chip advantage over Michalak. That wouldn't last long as Michalak would take control of the match. Nearly three hours in, however, things would change and Couden would double with the {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} against Michalak's {A-Hearts}{6-Spades}. Couden would never look back and Michalak would make his last stand eventually. When he did, he was dominated with the {A-Hearts}{4-Clubs} against Couden's {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. Michalak would not improve and was eliminated in second place for $36,496.

Next up for the Hollywood Poker Open is the Championship Event at the M Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada starting on June 27. PokerNews will be there to bring you all the exciting poker action, so make sure to tune in!

John Michalak Eliminated in 2nd Place ($36,496)

John Michalak
John Michalak

John Michalak would move all in with {A-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Joey Couden was more than happy to call with {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Couden was two cards away from securing victory.

The turn was the {2-Hearts} giving Michalak a few more outs. The river, however, was the {7-Diamonds} and Michalak was eliminated in 2nd place for an impressive $36,496 - his best tournament score ever. "I was just tired there at the end," Michalak said.

Couden in the meantime was exuberant. "Let's go baby," he said as the river card was flipped over. He went over to his rail where high fives and hugs were handed out like candy on Halloween. "Whhooooooo!" he yelled, beaming as his friends patted him on the back.

Christopher Collins

Christopher Collins opened to 32,000 and was re-raised by Joey Couden to 96,000. Collins made the call and the dealer put out a flop of {J-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. Couden led out for 65,000 and was called by Collins.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and Couden bet 118,000 this time. Collins again made the call.

The river was the {Q-Hearts} and Couden didn't think too long before announcing that he was all in. He was snap-called by Collins who turned over {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} for a flopped open-ended straight draw that turned into top pair on the river. The Queen on the river gave Couden two pair though as he had {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Collins was eliminated in 3rd place and Couden goes into heads up play with a slight chip advantage over John Michalak.

Todd Funderburg and Joey Couden would get in a pre-flop raising war that saw Funderburg at risk with a paltry {A-Clubs}{3-Hearts} which was dominated by Couden's {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}.

The board would run out {K-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} to give Couden the pot and move him over the million chip mark. Funderburg was eliminated in 4th place.

Jimmie Adams

Todd Funderburg opened to 25,000 and Christopher Collins re-raised to 59,000. It was folded to Jimmie Adams in the big blind who moved all in for 175,000 on top. Funderburg snap-folded and Collins went into the tank as it would be for his tournament life if he made the call and lost.

Collins shook his head slightly three times and seemed resigned when he announced a call. Collins turned over {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and was racing against Adams and his {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Collins would win the race when the board ran out {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{K-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Adams was left with 27,000 in chips.

A few hands later, John Michalak would limp in under the gun and Adams would move all in for his last 19,000. Todd Funderburg would call from the button and Christopher Collins would as well from the small blind. Joey Couden raised to 68,000 and John Michalak decided to apply some pressure and made it 160,000 to go. It was folded by to Couden who decided to fold and muttered a comment to Michalak.

"You pissed me off," said Michalak as he turned over {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

"I pissed you off? I want to see you on the streets." said Couden.

Michalak glared at him. "What?"

"I want to beat you up." responded Couden, who appeared to be joking, but Michalak didn't take it that way.

"Floor," yelled Michalak.

The floor came over and quickly calmed things down - no penalties were given and Adams {2-}{2-} would lose to Michalak's hand when the board ran out {A-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}.

Scott Dehm Eliminated in 6th Place ($11,151)

Scott Dehm
Scott Dehm

Scott Dehm would move all in on a {Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop with {Q-Spades}{7-Clubs} for top pair. It was bad timing on his part as he ran into the on fire Joey Couden who had flopped a set with {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. The {K-Spades} on the turn meant Dehm was drawing dead and Couden reached over to shake Dehm's hand and congratulate him on his excellent finish.

Dehm was the Day One chip leader and ran that stack into an outstanding 6th place result.

PJ Grace opened for 20,000 and was called by John Michalak, The flop came {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Grace led out for 25,000. Michalak bet 200,000 which was enough to set Grace all in. Grace made the call with {J-}{J-} which was ahead of the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} that Michalak had. The turn changed that, however, as it was the {K-Clubs} to give Michalak a flush.

Grace still had outs to a six or Jack but the river was the {5-Diamonds} and he was eliminated in 7th place. Michalak in the meantime becomes the first player to top the one million chip mark.

The race was over quickly as the flop would come {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. The turn was the {2-Spades} and the river was the {A-Hearts} and Clements was eliminated in 8th place while Couden continued his hot run.

Stephen Birtcher survived countless all in's but his luck finally ran out. He called off his last 6K on a {8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop with {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and was up against Joey Coulden's {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}. A nine would give Birtcher more than five times what he started the hand with but the turn was the {3-Spades} and the river was the {10-Diamonds} to give Couden a full house and eliminating Birtcher in 9th place.

Trevor Renner moved all in with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} but had the bad timing to run into the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} that Todd Funderburg held. Funderburg also moved all in and Renner would be eliminated when the board ran out {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

It was quite the day for Renner who started off slowly and was down to less than 10,000 in chips. He would run that up to one of the top stacks in the room before running into a dry spell at the end of the day.
