Day 1: Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker Ends With Half of the Chips in Play

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Day 1 of the Hollywood Poker Open Tunica Regional Championship is in the books, and leading the four remaining players is Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker. Moneymaker has more than half of the chips in play on the exact money bubble, and only relinquished his chip lead for a brief period of time throughout the entire final table.

Moneymaker busted four of the six players that exited the final table empty handed, including BJ McBrayer and Ryan Stevenson on the same hand. McBrayer open-shoved 13 big blinds from early position, Moneymaker called in the small blind, Stevenson re-shoved for 33 big blinds, and Moneymaker called again.

McBrayer: {k-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Moneymaker: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Stevenson: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

Moneymaker flopped a pair of aces when the dealer fanned {a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}, and remained ahead on the turn ({10-Diamonds}) and the river ({6-Spades}).

The Team PokerStars Pro’s dominance started prior to the final table, when Marty Zabib tried running a big bluff. Zabib three-bet shoved on a flop of {2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs} with {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, and Moneymaker called with {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. The ace alone was good enough for the lead, but the turn was a club, ending the hand and pushing Moneymaker above six figures.

Joining Moneymaker on Sunday will be 2013 WSOP bracelet winner Jonathan Taylor (91,800), Toby Mathews (90,400), and 2007 WSOP Main Event final tablist Lee Childs (16,100). Childs and Taylor played in a very interesting hand during the final level of the evening, where Childs raised out of the small blind and Taylor defended the big blind. Childs led out on a flop of {j-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, Taylor called, and Childs check-raised after the {a-Diamonds} turned. Taylor called once again, and both players checked after the {9-Hearts} completed the board. Childs showed {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for a bricked flush draw, and Taylor showed {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for his own bricked flush draw, but queen-high was good enough to win the pot.

The HPO Tunica Regional Championship attracted 20 players, generating a total prize pool of $32,580. Third place earns $6,016, second $9,024, and the winner will walk away with $15,040 along with a $2,500 buy-in for the Hollywood Poker Open Championship at The M Resort Spa Casino Las Vegas in June.

Among the players who were unable to survive the day were Jonathan Hart, Barry Schultz, Jason Mayfield, Jamie Kizer, and Gene Fletcher. Schultz received a bad beat from Moneymaker when he moved all in over the top of a raise and two calls with {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. Moneymaker, the second called, put Schultz at risk with {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and flopped a king.

Play will resume at the Hollywood Casino at noon local time tomorrow, and the four survivors will battle until a winner is crowned.

Hart Out

Jonathan Hart
Jonathan Hart

Jonathan Hart raised to 2,200 in early position, Chris Moneymaker called on the button, and both blinds released.

The flop fell {4-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Hart continued for 2,500, and Moneymaker raised to 5,200. Hart re-raised plopping 24,000 more in front of him and leaving a single black T100 chip behind. Moneymaker just called.

The turn was the {5-Spades}, Hart checked, and Moneymaker moved all in. Hart called.

Hart: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Moneymaker: {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

The {6-Spades} bricked off on the river, and Hart was eliminated.

Moneymaker Busts McBrayer and Stevenson

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Ryan Stevenson - Eliminated
Ryan Stevenson - Eliminated

BJ McBrayer open-shoved for 13,400 in early position, Chris Moneymaker called out of the small blind, and Ryan Stevenson re-shoved for 33,400 in the big blind. Once again, Moneymaker called.

McBrayer: {k-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Moneymaker: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Stevenson: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

The dealer spread a flop of {a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}, giving Moneymaker a leading pair of aces, and his hand held up as the turn and river bricked {10-Diamonds}, {6-Spades} respectively

Stevenson and McBrayer hit the rail, while the Team PokerStars Pro rocketed back into the chip lead with 155,000.

Moneymaker Bombs the River

Level 10 : 400/800, 75 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker opened to 1,600 from early position, Toby Mathews called in the cutoff, and the flop came all clubs; {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Both players checked.

The turn was a repeat eight - the {8-Spades} - and Moneymaker led out for 6,000. Mathews called.

The river was the {9-Diamonds}, and Moneymaker dropped a bomb, firing 30,000. Mathews went deep into the tank, considering the one-and-a-half-pot bet, and ultimately folded {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} face up.

Moneymaker didn't show, rather he slid his cards forward facedown and raked in the pot.

Ladies Spurn Schultz

Level 10 : 400/800, 75 ante
Barry Schultz
Barry Schultz

Toby Mathews raised to 1,700 in middle position, Jonathan Taylor called on the button, Chris Moneymaker called in the small blind, and Barry Schultz moved all in for 17,700 from the big blind. Mathews and Taylor both folded, but Moneymaker called.

Schultz: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Moneymaker: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

There was a king in the window of the {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} flop, giving Moneymaker the lead, but Schultz held the largest diamond. Unfortunately for him neither the turn ({2-Clubs}) or the river ({8-Hearts}) were a diamond or a queen, and he was eliminated.

Moneymaker raked in the pot somewhat apologetically, and is back up to 80,000 chips.

Zabib Busts; Redraw

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante
Marty Zabib
Marty Zabib

Marty Zabib opened to 1,025 from under the gun, Chris Moneymaker called on his direct left, and the rest of the players folded. The flop came {2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs}, Zabib fired out three orange T1,000 chips, and Moneymaker raised to 7,000. Zabib moved all in, and Moneymaker called.

Zabib: {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Moneymaker: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Moneymaker's ace-high was good enough, but the {9-Clubs} turned to give him an unbeatable flush. The {3-Hearts} completed the board, and Zabib was eliminated.

The remaining 10 players will now redraw to the final table.

Jonathan Taylor
Jonathan Taylor

Jonathan Taylor raised to 950 on the button, Marty Zabib defended his big blind, and the flop fell {8-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. Both players checked.

The turn was the suicide king ({k-Hearts}), Zabib led out for 700, and Taylor called.

The river was a third heart - the {5-Hearts} - and Zabib tossed out another 2,000. Taylor raised to 8,000, Zabib tank-called, and the 2013 WSOP bracelet winner showed {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a flush.

Gene Fletcher - Eliminated

Gene Fletcher opened to 800 in the cutoff, Jonathan Taylor three-bet to 2,600 out of the small blind, and Fletcher moved all in for around 10,000, Taylor quickly called.

Taylor: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Fletcher: {a-}{j-}

Taylor was already ahead, but he flopped a pair of kings to push him further ahead and held as the turn and river both missed Fletcher.

Moneymaker Cruising

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Chris Moneymaker, Gene Fletcher, Barry Schultz, and BJ McBrayer took a flop of {7-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}. All four players committed another 1,700, and the turn was the {q-Spades}. The action checked to Moneymaker on the button, he fired out 3,700, and only Fletcher called.

The {k-Diamonds} completed the board, Fletcher checked, and Moneymaker reached into his stack. He silently flipped forward two grey T5,000 chips, making it 10,000 to go, and Fletcher instantly called.

The 2003 WSOP Main Event champ showed {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for the nut-flush, and Fletcher begrudgingly showed {k-Spades}{10-} for a pair of tens.
