Welcome to Day 1a of HPT Black Hawk

Black Hawk
Black Hawk

The Heartland Poker Tour is back in full swing after five preliminary events with Wednesday marking the beginning of the $1,100 Main Event for the July edition of HPT Black Hawk. This particular stop is becoming a fixture among the poker world as an end-of-summer haven once the action in Las Vegas comes to a close.

With four starting flights, this nationally televised event is sure to see a huge field and an even bigger prize pool. Last year’s champion Ben Brown outlasted a field of 763 entries en route to a first-place prize of $159,131.

Action will begin at noon local time for all four starting flights, from Wednesday through Saturday, with the field combining for Day 2 on Sunday. Players will receive 30,000 in starting chips with blinds set to begin at 100/100 with big blind antes beginning in Level 4 (100/300). Levels will last 40 minutes each with play set to continue until the end of Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000) or until 13 percent of the field remains.

There will be 15-minute breaks at the completion of every three levels and a 60-minute dinner break at the end of Level 9. Registration will remain open until the beginning of Level 10 at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time with unlimited re-entries available during that time.

PokerNews will be providing coverage all weekend long. Stay tuned to catch updates on all the action as the tournament unfolds.

Mike Englert was recently seen in his seat as Level 2 is underway. Englert is no stranger to success at this venue: he took down the HPT Black Hawk Main Event in February, 2018, outlasting a field of 607 players for a massive payday of $200,762. He also took third place in this very event in July, 2017 for $53,550.

Chris Tryba
Chris Tryba

Chris Tryba may have been in a vehicle leaving Las Vegas 20 hours ago to make the 12-hour drive to Colorado but that didn't stop him from making it to the Golden Gates Poker Parlour for Day 1a of the HPT Black Hawk this afternoon.

The Massachusetts native with a cabin in the Denver area is always a fun figure to have in any poker room and will be looking to find a big score in Black Hawk after a summer that saw him finish in sixth place in the WSOP $10k Seven Card Stud Championship for $40,066.

Lantzy Doubles With Big Slick

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ross Lantzy
Ross Lantzy

Ross Lantzy's table has been audible from the far end of the room all day and it was only a matter of time before that translated into chips flying.

Lantzy shoved all in for his last 10,800 from early position and was called by the player in the hijack. After everybody else folded, it was time to turn up the cards.

Lantzy emphatically threw down {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, meanwhile his opponent tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and a profanity to go along with it, matching the table's raucous energy and being met with laughter.

The dealer brought the flop {a-Spades}{4-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} and Lantzy began to fist pump to go along with the laughter that was still occurring. The turn and river came {3-Hearts}{5-Spades} and he secured the double.

Poncik Secures Double Knockout, Soars To 160K

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Travis Poncik
Travis Poncik

Jason Mangold was just seen leaving his seat and walking over to the front desk to buy in again. Travis Poncik was the benefactor of the knockout and was more than happy to recount the hand.

According to Poncik, the hand was actually a double knockout where he opened with {j-}{j-} and received calls from Mangold and another player who was in the blinds.

The flop came {j-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-} to give Poncik a full house and he saw the first player to act shove all in. Poncik shoved over the top and Mangold committed the rest of his chips.

Mangold had {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a flush draw and the third player had {8-}{x-} for trip eights. Poncik was in commanding position with his jacks full and held when the board ran out clean to get him two knockouts and a spot atop the leaderboard.

Players are off on a one-hour dinner break with play set to resume at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time. The late registration period will remain open through the dinner break, at which point Level 10 will begin with blinds of 600/1,200 and a big-blind ante of 1,200.

Howell Sends One To the Rail, Is Over 100K

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Angel Howell
Angel Howell

Angel Howell saw action folded to her in the hijack and opened to 4,200. A player on the button shoved for around 16,000 and action folded back to Howell who made the call.

Angel Howell: {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Howell's opponent found himself behind but with two live cards going to the flop, which came {3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades} to give Howell a pair of eights. However, her opponent's outs remained unchanged.

The turn changed everything when the dealer flipped over the {a-Diamonds}, giving Howell two pair and having her opponent drawing dead, wishing everybody good luck as the river {9-Diamonds} fell and he was eliminated.

Grisham Gets Gregg on River, Tops 150K

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Matt Grisham
Matt Grisham

Dan Gregg was no longer seen in his seat and word was that he had gotten it in as a massive favorite in a cooler situation against Matt Grisham.

When asked, Grisham was happy to offer the information on the matter, saying that the two saw a flop of {q-}{8-}{5-} with two diamonds and there was a round of betting. The turn brought another {q-Spades} and stacks got in.

Matt Grisham: {q-}{j-}
Dan Gregg: {k-}{q-}

Gregg was a massive favorite going to the river, needing to dodge one of two jacks to stay alive in the tournament as well as board-pairing chop outs to fade the double up. Unfortunately for him, the river fell {j-} and Grisham took down the pot, vaulting his stack north of 150,000.
