Berger Bags Huge Chip Lead on Day 1b of HPT Golden Gates

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
David Berger

Ten hours of play and 15 levels are complete and all chips have been bagged for Day 1b of HPT Golden Gates $1,100 Main Event. After Day 1a drew 82 entries, today’s flight saw 128 join the fun with 18 players remaining when play concluded.

The big story for the day was David Berger, who bagged a whopping 628,000 to finish as the clear chip leader, head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Berger had chipped up to around 300,000 and was already one of the chip leaders when play resumed from the final break of the night before winning two massive pots with pocket aces, holding against top pair with a straight draw and later against ace-king in an all-in preflop situation. From there, he continued to build until play finished for the night.

Second in chips is Michael Sherry, who also led a charge at the end of the evening, building his stack from around 200,000 to its finishing point in the last two levels of the evening. Sherry bagged a stack of 357,500, also above Day 1a chip leader Greg Geller’s 336,000. Other players to finish in the top five include 2015 WSOP Main Event third place finisher Neil Blumenfield (320,500), Keith McCarthy (283,000), and Joel Verbeck (246,500).

There were also a handful of notable players who did not advance, including Ben Keeline, Matt Grisham, Brian Leitch, Chris Moon, and 2019 WSOP Main Event 39th place finisher Dapo Ajayi.

In total, 35 players have advanced to Day 2 on Sunday. Two more starting flights remain, with the next one upcoming Friday at noon local time. Come back to PokerNews for more coverage as the tournament continues.

Berger Delivers Cooler To Gresham, Eclipses Half-Million Mark

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
David Berger

Matt Grisham was seen giving a fist bump to another player at the table on his way out of the room while David Berger was raking in another massive pot.

"Aces to ace-king all-in preflop," said the tournament director. Berger filled in the details with a little support from a few other players at the table.

Berger opened to 11,000 and Grisham three-bet to 30,000. Berger four-bet to 60,000 and Grisham came over the top for around 150,000. Berger called.

Matt Grisham: {a-Diamonds}{k-}
David Berger: {a-}{a-}

The flop came {8-}{7-}{4-} with two diamonds to give Grisham a little hope at a backdoor flush. However, the turn {a-} sealed the deal and the {9-} river put Grisham's night to an end around 30 minutes before the end of Day 1.

LePeau Scores Massive Pot To Nearly Triple

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Steve LePeau
Steve LePeau

With a board reading {j-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, Martin Smith had a bet of 6,500 in front of him from middle position. Action was back on him after Joel Verbeck shoved from his left, Lynn Hopkins called all in for less from the hijack, and Steve LePeau also called all in for less from the big blind.

Smith folded and it was time for the remaining three hands to be exposed.

Steve LePeau: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Lynn Hopkins: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
Joel Verbeck: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}

LePeau had flopped Broadway and was in need of fading outs to a chop or a full house from both of his opponents. The turn and river ran out clean, coming {4-Spades}{10-Hearts} and he scored the huge pot to vault him to what is likely the chip lead with 32 players remaining.

Grisham Hits Set on Turn and Doubles

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Matt Grisham
Matt Grisham

Matt Grisham's was standing up pumping his fist, having just doubled with his winning hand of {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} still tabled.

He was happy to recount the hand, saying he had opened to 3,000 from middle position and was three-bet by Ben Jensen on the button to 6,500. The small blind cold-called and Grisham came along with the three players seeing a flop of {9-Clubs}{a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

Action checked through and the turn came {7-Hearts}. The small blind led out for 4,000 and Jensen raised to 15,000. Grisham, having just turned a set, raised to 35,000. The small blind folded and Jensen came over the top to put Grisham all in. He was more than happy to call.

Jensen had {a-}{k-} and was unable to fill up to a higher full house when the river {10-Clubs} fell. With the pot, Grisham now finds himself as one of the names near the top of the leaderboard.

The seat that was previously occupied by Dapo Ajayi has recently been vacated and in a team effort from an entire half of the table, they were able to confirm that Keith McCarthy had been the one to send Ajayi to the rail.

According to the table, the two got it in on a flop of {j-}{5-}{4-} with two diamonds. McCarthy had {k-}{k-} and Ajayi had {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

The board ran out to double-pair the five and four and McCarthy held to secure the elimination and bring his stack to over 200,000.

Fadeyi Makes a Straight

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Dapo Fadeyi
Dapo Fadeyi

There was around 8,000 in the pot going five ways to the flop between the small blind, Dapo Fadeyi in the big blind, Cliff Flesher in the hijack as well as the players in the cutoff and on the button.

The flop came {6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and action checked to the cutoff who bet 3,200. The players on the button and in the small blind folded and both Fadeyi and Flesher called, taking action three-handed to the turn {4-Spades} where all three players checked.

The river fell {8-Clubs} and Fadeyi and Flesher checked once more. The cutoff bet 3,500 and both players called.

Upon calling and completing all action, Flesher tabled {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} for a pair of nines. The cutoff mucked.

Fadeyi then turned over {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for a straight and raked in the pot.

Sloan Sends Keeline To Rebuy

Ben Keeline
Ben Keeline

On a board of {2-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, Ben Keeline was all in from the hijack for 22,300 in a multi-way pot where he saw action from a player in middle position as well as Shane Sloan who was on Keeline's direct right.

Sloan and the other player in middle position were set to compete for a side pot as the dealer brought the turn {3-Diamonds} and the player in middle position checked to Sloan, shoved for his remaining stack. The player in middle position folded and it was time to expose hands.

Ben Keeline: {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Shane Sloan: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Sloan was ahead with a pair of kings to Keeline's flush draw and needed to fade one of the remaining clubs in the deck. The river came {j-Spades} to secure the pot for Sloan and Keeline was temporarily eliminated, though has since rebought and has been seated in the same exact seat.

Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante
Aaron Johnson with Jeremy Smith
Aaron Johnson with Jeremy Smith

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Johnson, who was out at the 2019 WSOP, is in action at the HPT Golden Gates.

Bishop Makes Big Call and Holds for Huge Pot

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Paul Bishop
Paul Bishop

There was around 16,000 in the pot after flop action as the dealer flipped over the turn on a board showing {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{q-Spades} and Paul Bishop bet 8,200 from the big blind. His opponent in the cutoff shoved all in and Bishop asked for a count which was totaled to be 21,900.

Bishop went into the tank, thinking for around 90 seconds before announcing to the table to just give him another second, apologizing as he put his hands to his head in thought. Around 30 seconds later, he made the call for what was around 60 percent of his remaining chips.

Paul Bishop: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Bishop had made the correct call and found himself in the lead with two pair to his opponent's flush draw. The river fell {4-Spades} and he held to secure the knockout and add to his stack.
