Sater Bags Day 1c Chip Lead at HPT Golden Gates

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Jason Sater
Jason Sater

The third of four starting flights at HPT Golden Gates $1,100 Main Event has become one with its two predecessors after 15 levels of action. Day 1c nearly doubled the total from the first two flights combined, seeing a massive 204 entries for the day. When the dust settled, it was Jason Sater who bagged 590,000 to find himself in pole position among the 34 players to advance.

After building his stack steadily throughout the day, Sater played one major hand where he backed into a straight in a three-bet pot against Jeff Fielder and raised Fielder’s bet to 110,000. Upon being called, Sater found himself with over a half-million in his stack and he climbed further from there before play finished.

Sater finds himself second in chips among all players to have advanced to Day 2, following behind Day 1b chip leader David Berger who ended yesterday’s flight with 628,000. They are the only two people to bag stacks north of 500,000 after three flights.

Maz Keshavarzi (460,500) and Bruce Russell (419,000) round out the top three in chips for the flight with both players finding themselves above everybody else in the field besides Berger and Sater. Russell had a boisterous day, with “Bruce is on the loose” heard across the Poker Parlour throughout the day as he built his stack by way of making quads twice and getting paid both times.

Other players to bag large stacks include Eric Smidinger (348,500), Robert Brubaker (287,000), and WSOP 2019 Main Event 39th place finisher Dapo Ajayi (264,500).

Players who were not fortunate enough to advance to Day 2 in today’s heat include Nick Pupillo, Chris Moon, Ben Keeline, Danny Gonzales, and Alex Rocha, who lost a big pot at the end of the night to find himself crippled and chose to forfeit his stack and try again tomorrow rather than put crumbs into a bag for a 35-hour hiatus.

The fourth and final initial flight of the tournament begins at noon, local time on Saturday. How many players will join the 69 to have advanced through the first three flights and who will they be? Tune back in to PokerNews tomorrow to find out.

"BRUCE IS ON THE LOOSE!" has been heard a few times today, though he has scurried under the radar in some fashion. His stack, however, has grown to a size that could no longer remain out of eyesight. With a little over 90 minutes left in the evening, Bruce Russell is showing himself as a contender for the Day 1c and potential overall chip lead with a stack closing in on a half-million.

Sater Makes Nuts Versus Fielder To Take Stack Over Half-Million

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Jason Sater

Jeff Fielder opened from early position to 6,000 and was called by Caleb Meyer in middle position. Jason Sater three-bet to 22,000 and Fielder called. Meyer folded, taking action heads up to a flop of {j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. Fielder checked and Sater made a continuation-bet of 21,000. FIelder called.

The turn came {10-Spades} and both players checked. The river was {9-Spades} and Fielder bet 27,000. Sater put in a raise to 110,000 and Fielder went into the tank before putting in a stack of red, T$5,000 chips to call.

Sater calmly turned over {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for a straight, having backdoored the nuts. Fielder mucked and Sater raked in the pot, bringing his stack above 500,000 and making him the clear chip leader for the field at this point in the evening.

Pupillo Felted by Kurtz

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kevin Kurtz on Day 1b
Kevin Kurtz on Day 1b

Nick Pupillo was seen exiting the tournament area with a seat card occupying the space where his chips formerly sat. The pot was in the process of being shipped to Kevin Kurtz, who had a winning hand of {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} still tabled on a board of {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}.

(Pupillo later revealed that he had {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and gotten all his chips in on the flop after flopping Broadway to Kurtz' set of kings which later filled up to a full house after the board came with running fours.)

While this ends Pupillo's chances at advancing for Day 1c, he is likely to be seen for tomorrow's final initial flight.

Zedo Raises Flop in Three-Bet Pot, Nears 100K

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Corey Zedo
Corey Zedo

Barb Visher had opened from middle position and been called by Corey Zedo in the cutoff before the small blind squeezed to 3,800. Visher was in the process of confirming the amount and then threw in chips to call. Zedo called shortly thereafter and the three went to a flop of {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

The small blind was first to act and checked. Visher put out 6,500 and Zedo put in a raise to 14,000. The small blind quickly folded and Visher looked back at her cards before taking one in each hand to replace the top with the bottom and vice versa before putting both cards back in her right hand and tossing them to the center of the table.

With the pot, Zedo is right around the 100,000-chip well into the seventh level of play for the day.

Welcome to Day 1c of HPT Golden Gates Main Event

Starting Chips at Golden Gates Poker Parlour
Starting Chips at Golden Gates Poker Parlour

It’s time for Day 1c of HPT Golden Gates $1,100 Main Event.

Two of four initial flights have been completed with a total of 210 entries from those two flights - Day 1a on Wednesday saw 88 runners and yesterday's Day 1b got 128. Today’s flight is sure to surpass those figures with action set to begin at noon local time.

The chip leader through the first two days is David Berger who finished Day 1b with an eye-popping stack of 628,000. He is well clear of the rest of the field with only three other players, Michael Sherry (357,500), Day 1a chip leader Greg Geller (336,000), and Neil Blumenfield (320,500) taking stacks of over 300,000 into Day 2.

Day 1c has the same structure as the first two flights with starting stacks of 30,000 and 40-minute levels. Blinds begin at 100/100 and play will see the completion of 15 levels. There will be breaks at the completion of every three levels with a one-hour dinner break at the end of Level 9 at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time. Players have the option of unlimited re-entries and the registration period will remain open until the end of the dinner break at roughly 7:30 p.m.

Players such as Mike Englert, Chris Moon, Ben Keeline, and Dapo Ajayi are among those to have played in an earlier edition and not advance thus far. It is likely to see some or all of those players and many more coming in for the final two flights. PokerNews will be on hand to relay all the ensuing trials and tribulations as the day unfolds.
