Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Johnson, who was out at the 2019 WSOP, is in action at the HPT Golden Gates.

Low Goes High With Boat

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

A player in middle position opened to 500 and action folded around to Roger Low who was on the button and called. Both players in the blinds came along as well to take action four ways to the flop {4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades}. The blinds checked and the player in middle position bet 1,000. Low called and both blinds folded.

With action heads up, the turn fell {k-Hearts}. The original raiser checked to Low, who bet 2,500. She made the call and the river came {a-Spades}. The middle-position player checked to Low again and he fired again for 7,000. After some thought, the middle-position player put in a check-raise to 15,000. Low called.

"Good call," said the player in middle position as she turned over {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

Low tabled {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} for fives full of aces and took down the pot as the table laughed about how she was unable to get him off his hand due to its strength.

"I mean, you probably would have folded if I shoved all in over the top of you," responded Low.

"You think?!" she responded as the entire table erupted once more.

Gius and Wahdan Having Fun

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Nader Wahdan
Nader Wahdan

Nader Wahdan limped in from middle position and saw the players in the hijack and on the button limp behind him. The small blind completed and Greg Gius checked his option from the big blind.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}{6-Clubs} and all five players checked. The turn fell {6-Diamonds} and the small blind and Gius checked to put action on Wahdan who flung a yellow, T$1,000 with a slight upward trajectory into the betting circle in front of him. Three players quickly folded and action was back on Gius, who looked back at his cards before lifting them up to see them in their entirety. Wahdan feigned tossing his cards to the muck several times in anticipation of Gius folding.

"You're not one to fold so I can't even pretend like I have a six," said Gius as he folded. Wahdan laughed as he raked in the pot and the two engaged in some further banter as the dealer shuffled and got ready to deal the next hand.

Ferrari Gets River Fold

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante

There was around 6,000 in the pot on a board of {4-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and Reid Ferrari had bet 4,500 from middle position into his opponent in the big blind who put in a check-raise to 12,500. He thought for a bit and asked for confirmation that it was 8,000 more to call. Upon the dealer saying yes, he threw in the appropriate chips to call.

The river came {6-Diamonds} and the big blind slowed down, checking to Ferrari. After a few moments, Ferrari announced he was all in for around 17,400. His opponent went into the tank for over two minutes before pushing his cards forward to fold and Ferrari raked in the pot.

Harper Finds Value With Aces Up

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante
Terry Harper
Terry Harper

Nader Wahdan opened to 800 and received calls from a player in middle position, Terry Harper in the cutoff, and the player in the big blind. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and the big blind and Wahdan checked. The player in middle position bet 1,400, getting a call from Harper, a fold from the big blind, and a call from Wahdan.

The turn came {6-Spades} and Wahdan checked to the player in middle position who fired another bet of 3,000. Harper and Wahdan both called.

The river came {a-Clubs} and Wahdan and the player in middle position checked. Harper threw in a bet of 3,000 and Wahdan quickly folded. The middle-position player thought for a while and ultimately made the call.

"Well, if you have to think about it that long I guess I'm good," Harper said as he turned over {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for the nuts. His opponent simultaneously showed {k-Spades}{q-Spades} which was the second-best hand among the two all along and Harper collected the chips, adding them to his stack.
