Welcome To Day 2 of HPT Golden Gates

Dapo Ajayi
Dapo Ajayi

Four starting flights are in the books at the HPT Golden Gates $1,100 Main Event and the day has arrived for the entire field to combine under one roof. The four days' entries totaled 732 and 129 will return today with their sights set on the final table.

Before that happens, the top 81 players will make it into the money. David Berger enters the day as the chip leader after bagging a stack of 626,000 on Day 1b. He and Day 1c chip leader Jason Sater (590,000) are the only two players to take a stack of over a half-million into Day 2.

That does not mean there are not plenty of formidable contenders still left in the field, however. Familiar faces to Black Hawk such as Day 1a chip leader Greg Geller (336,000), Dapo Ajayi (264,500), Danny Gonzales (264,500), Chris Tryba (166,000) and Nader Wahdan (150,000) will make their way up the mountain hoping to make it to the final nine.

Other jnotable players entering Day 2 include Mike Englert (346,000), Neil Blumenfield (320,500), Nick Pupillo (238,000), Jeff Grimes (191,500), and reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson (67,500).

Cards will be in the air at 11 a.m. as the field comes back with their eyes set on the first-place prize of $152,671. Those who do make it into the money will lock up a first-level payout of $1,917.

Blinds will resume at 2,500/5,000/5,000 with 40-minute levels and breaks every two hours. Play will occur until the official fine table of nine is reached, at which point players will bag and return for the televised and streamed Day 3. Stay tuned to PokerNews to see who will find themselves a seat at the final table.

Graham Busts Robb on First Hand of Day

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Ruth Graham
Ruth Graham

On the first hand of the day, Jay Robb went all in for 62,000 from middle position and received a call from Ruth Graham in the cutoff. All remaining players folded.

Jay Robb: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Ruth Graham: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

The flop gave Robb a little life, coming {9-Spades}{q-Hearts}{4-Spades}, but the turn {6-Clubs} and river {3-Spades} were unable to get him to top Graham's aces as he became the first elimination of the day

Murphy Cooked by Hinde

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Michael Murphy shoved all in for his last 65,000 or so from the hijack and received action from Michael Hinde, who was in the small blind.

Michael Murphy: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Michael Hinde: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

The flop came {3-Spades}{q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Hearts}, giving Murphy a straight draw on the flop that never filled up. He wished everybody good luck and was on his way.

"It never comes easy," said both Hinde and tablemate Eydie Mortellaro simultaneously, sending both of them into laughter as Hinde collected the pot.

Sater Sends Swansfeger Home Early

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Jason Sater had opened from late position and action was back on him after Chuck Swansfeger shoved all in for his last 44,000 from the big blind. Sater made the call.

Chuck Swansfeger: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Jason Sater: {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The flop came {10-Clubs}{a-Spades}{q-Hearts}, giving Swansfeger two pair and Sater a gutshot draw to Broadway. The turn fell {q-Spades}, giving Swansfeger a sweat on one final card. Unfortunately, that card would be his last as the dealer burned and turned the river {j-Clubs} to complete Sater's straight and eliminate Swansfeger from the tournament.

Poncik Chipping Up Early

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

In the first half of the day's first level, Travis Poncik has chipped up to 225,000, more than doubling the stack with which he came into the day. According to his wife, Melodie, he has been dealt pocket jacks, kings, and aces already and used them to get his stack to its current figure.
