Brian Frye Leads as 14 Players Advance from Day 1a of HPT Columbus

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Brian Frye
Brian Frye

On the Heartland Poker Tour’s first-ever visit to Hollywood Casino Columbus, 103 runners took part in the first of three starting flights in the $1,650 HPT Main Event. After 15 levels of play on Day 1a, just 14 remained with Brian Frye and his stack of 537,000 leading the pack.

Others to bag big stacks were Abdul Amer (469,500) and arguably one of the biggest names in the field in Nick Guagenti, who currently sits 20th on Ohio’s all-time money list with more than $1 million in tournament earnings. He made it through with 433,500. Rounding out the top five were Keith Thurman (260,000) and Vitaliy Neymar (220,500).

Others to advance to Sunday’s Day 2 were Kwynn Richards (217,500), Anthony Kelly (174,500), Ryan Kalb (122,000), Matt Radcliffe (96,500), and Scott Dehm (14,000), who left with two and a half hours to go an saw his 100K stack whittled down by the blinds and antes.

Among those to fire and fall on 1a were Henry Zhou, Iverson Snuffer, Michael Hahn, Mike Sabbia, Justin Boggs, Bryant Miller, WSOP bracelet winner Adam Friedman, and Caleb King.

For Snuffer, he busted in Level 10 (600/1,200/1,200) after flopping a set of tens only to discover his opponent had flopped a set of jacks. He indicated he’ll return on Friday for the 1b flight.

Day 1b will take place at Noon on Friday followed by 1c on Saturday at the same time. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action from both flights, so be sure to tune in all weekend for all the HPT action you can handle.

Big Slick Does the Trick for Richards

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Kwynn Richards
Kwynn Richards

Kwynn Richards got his stack of 38,000 all in preflop and was at risk against Hae Yim.

Yim: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Richards: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

It was a classic flip but Richards needed to improve to stay alive. The {2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop didn't do him any favors but the {k-Clubs} did as he paired up to take the lead. The {7-Hearts} river was of no consequence and Richards won the flip.

Richards doubled on the hand while Kim went bust a short time later.

Friedman Busts Player With River Call

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Adam Friedman

An all-in situation was in progress with the board reading {j-Spades}{6-Clubs}{k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. Seat 1 had moved all in for 13,100 with at least 20,000 already in the pot.

Seat 2 was deep in the tank contemplating the call with Adam Friedman still left to act behind. After a couple more minutes, the clock was called and the floor came over to administer the countdown and Seat 2 folded as the clock ran out.

Friedman then asked for a count and thought briefly before throwing in the call. Seat 1 showed the {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} while Friedman revealed the Queen high flush with the {q-Spades}{7-Spades} to take down the large pot. After the hand, Seat 2 claimed to have folded a lower flush.

Welcome to Day 1a of the HPT Hollywood Columbus Main Event!

HPT Felt and cards
HPT Felt and cards

The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) is at the Hollywood Casino Columbus for the start of the $1,650 buy-in, $500,000 GTD Main Event.

That tournament, which will be live reported right here on PokerNews, will feature three starting flights beginning today with Day 1a at 2 p.m. Flights 1b and 1c will take place at Noon local time on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 respectively, and the survivors from all three flights will return for Day 2 action at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 29. Then, on Monday, April 29, the final table will play out starting at Noon.

Speaking of that final table, it will not only be live streamed but also filmed for television. This is notable as the state of Ohio has never held a nationally televised poker tournament. That will change thanks to the HPT, which has awarded more than $100 million to poker enthusiasts over 15 seasons.

"We have been looking forward to the Hollywood Columbus event for quite some time," said HPT marketing manager Korey Stewart. "There has been quite a bit of chatter about the event within the poker community since we announced it a few months back. Ohio has a great poker scene and we're anticipating a big turnout."

In addition to the Main Event, which players can qualify for as little as $90 via HPT's popular satellite system, there have been several side events in variants such as 7-Game Mix, Pot-Limit Omaha, and a Tag Team event. We'll be offering mini recaps on those events throughout the day.
