Bill Byrnes Wins HPT St. Louis Main Event for $148,587

The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) was visiting the Hollywood Casino St. Louis for the first time, and the $1,650 Main Event drew 444 entries, which created a $646,020 prize pool.

In the end, 47-year-old criminal defense attorney Bill Byrnes emerged victorious to claim a $148,587 first-place prize.

“It was awesome,” Byrnes said after the win. “I was pretty comfortable the whole time. I came in third in chips today, which I felt good about. The guy that came in second, I’d been playing with the past couple of days, he was a hell of a player. I was definitely worried about him. There was a number of good players at the table but I felt comfortable going in. I’m going to take my wife to Europe, not sure what else to do with the rest.”

Byrnes pledged to donate some of his winnings to the charity First Descents, which offers young adults living with and surviving cancer a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them.

Interestingly, Byrnes almost didn’t get the chance to compete at the final table as he had a court meeting Monday morning that had the potential to keep him preoccupied.

“I had a case set for jury trial this morning. If it was going to go I would’ve had to be blinded down,” he admitted. “I wouldn’t have made it back here. I was pretty far down the list so didn’t think they’d get to me but I was holding my breath.

Prior to the win, Byrnes had $429,719 in career tournament earnings including a previous best of $55,968 for finishing 11th in the 2015 World Series of Poker Colossus.

Final Table Action

The first final table elimination came about an hour into play when Greg Wood jammed ace-jack only to run it smack dab into Steve Green’s two black aces. Wood didn’t get so much as a sweat and was sent packing in ninth place.

Not long after, Joe Landazzi fell when his pocket aces were cracked by Kou Vang, who had flopped a set of fives, and Tim Burden followed him out the door in seventh place. Burden, the 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker Champion, began the final table with a big chip lead but nothing seemed to go his way. Eventually, he was whittled down before four-betting all in with pocket four. Dave Simon, who had three-bet with nine-seven suited, called and turned a straight to eliminate Burden.

With six players remaining, Andy Echele had pocket aces and flopped two pair. Unfortunately for him, Keith Heine flopped trips and turned a boat, which is when the chips went in. The river wasn’t an ace and Echele headed for the payout desk to collect $24,872.

Minnesota poker pro Kou Vang bowed out in fifth place after shoving his short stack from the small blind with ace-deuce and getting called by Simon, who held six-three in the big. A six on the turn was the final nail in the coffin for the MSPT Hall of Famer, who took home $24,872 for his fifth-place finish.

Simon was the next to go after running a bluff against Heine, who had flopped a full house, and then Green took his leave in third place after losing a flip with deuces to Bill Byrnes’ ace-queen.
Byrne entered heads-up play with 6.33 million to Heine’s 6.975 million and immediately set about chipping up.

Eventually, he had Heine on the ropes when the final hand developed. Byrnes slow played pocket aces and flopped a set while Heine flopped a flush draw. The chips went in on the turn and Heine failed to find a fifth heart to fall in second place for $91,735. It was one spot better than last year when he finished third in the HPT St. Louis for $48,042.

Keith Heine Eliminated in 2nd Place ($91,735)

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 50,000 ante
Keith Heine - 2nd Place
Keith Heine - 2nd Place

In what would be the final hand of the HPT St. Louis, Keith Heine raised the button to 300,000 and Bill Byrnes called to see a {8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} flop.

Byrnes check-called a bet of 500,000 and then checked the {5-Diamonds} turn. Heine moved his short stack all in and Byrnes snapped him off.

Heine: {j-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Byrnes: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Brynes had flopped a set of aces but he wasn't out of the woods as Heine had a heart flush draw.

The dealer burned one last time and put out the {2-Clubs}. Heine missed and had to settle for second place.

Stephen Green - 3rd Place

After Keith Heine folded on the button, Bill Byrnes raised to 360,000 from his small blind.

Stephen Green then three-bet to 760,000 from his big blind, which was followed by an "All in." announcement by Byrnes.

Stephen Green called off and was in a race for his tournament life

Byrnes: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Green: {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

The {4-Spades}{k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs}{10-Spades} board was not kind to Green, and he was sent to the rail in third place.

The final two players are now on a short break while tournament officials make arrangements for heads-up play.

Level 27 : 30,000/60,000, 30,000 ante
Dave Simon - 4th Place
Dave Simon - 4th Place

Action folded to Keith Heine who limped in on the button. Dave Simon raised to 250,00 from the small blind. Action folded back around to Heine who called.

A {5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop came and Simon announced all in for 1.25 million. He was snap called by Heine.

Heine: {5-}{7-}
Simon: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Simon needed all the runner-runner help he could get after Heine flopped a full house but was unable to get there as the turn and river came {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and eliminated Simon in fouth place.

Kou Vang Eliminated in 5th Place ($31,978)

Level 27 : 30,000/60,000, 30,000 ante
Kou Vang - 5th Place
Kou Vang - 5th Place

Action folded around to Kou Vang in the small blind, and he went all in.

Dave Simon asked for a count from his big blind.

After the dealer counted out a total of 485,000, Simon made the call and the players tabled their hands.

Vang was ahead, but at risk.

Vang: {a-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}
Simon: {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}

The {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop was safe for Vang, but the {6-Hearts} turn put Simon in the lead.

The {4-Spades} was not the river ace Vang needed, and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Andy Echele Eliminated in 6th Place ($24,872)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Andy Echele - 6th Place
Andy Echele - 6th Place

Andy Echele limped in under the gun for 50,000 as did Keith Heine to his left. Action folded to Bill Byrnes in the small blind who called and Stephen Green checked his option.

Both Byrnes and Green checked the {6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop and Echele fired out 250,000. Heine called while the other two players folded.

Fireworks happened after the {7-Diamonds} came on the turn as Echele fired out 500,000 and was raised all in by Heine. Echele called only to find out he was far behind.

Echele: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}
Heine: {6-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Heine had turned a full house and Echele's tournament life was in desperate need of an ace on the river. It didn't happen though as instead it came the {5-Spades} ending Echele's run in sixth place.

Tim Burden Eliminated in 7th Place ($20,673)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Tim Burden - 7th Place
Tim Burden - 7th Place

Tim Burden, who started today's final table as the chipleader, has been eliminated.

Action folded around to Kou Vang on the button, and he raised to 105,000.

After Dave Simon three-bet to 300,000 from his small blind, Burden then four-bet shoved from his big blind.

Vang folded, and Simon asked for a count.

The dealer confirmed 610,000 total, Simon made the call, and the players tabled their hands.

Burden: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Simon: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, which gave Simon a good portion of the deck to work with in order to eliminate Burden.

The {8-Hearts} on the turn, which gave Simon the straight, was one of those cards.

The dealer fanned the {7-Clubs} on the river, and Burden's place at the final table officially ended.

Joe Landazzi Eliminated in 8th Place ($17,120)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Joe Landazzi - 8th Place
Joe Landazzi - 8th Place

Joe Landazzi raised to 80,000 from middle position.

Action then folded around to Kou Vang, who called from his big blind.

After Vang checked the {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop, Landazzi shoved all in and was immediately called by Vang.

Landazzi had a big overpair to the board, but Vang had flopped top set.

Landazzi: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
Vang: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}

The {6-Hearts} turn was a good card for Landazzi, giving him more outs.

However, the {j-Diamonds} wasn't one of them, and he was our second elimination of the day.

Greg Wood Eliminated in 9th Place ($14,471)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Greg Wood - 9th Place
Greg Wood - 9th Place

We just had our first elimination of the day.

After Tim Burden raised to 80,000 from middle position, Greg Wood shoved all in from the cutoff position.

Action folded around to Stephen Green, and he made the call from his big blind.

Burden then asked for a count, and once the dealer confirmed 415,000, Burden folded, leaving Wood and Green heads up.

Wood: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Green: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

The flop of {6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} was no help to Wood, but the {10-Spades} gave him outs to a straight.

Unfortunately, the {4-Spades} was not one of those outs, and Wood was the first elimination at the final table.

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Craig Welko captures his third title!
Craig Welko captures his third title!

A series of side events played out leading up to the Main Event and amazingly Craig Welko managed to win three of them.

His heater began in Event #1: $350 No-Limit Hold’em, a tournament that drew a Missouri state record 1,283 entries. There was a six-way deal worked and Welko was not only deemed the champion, but took the most prize money with $37,402. It marked the biggest score of his aspiring career.

Then in Event #6: $200 NLH Bounty ($50 bounties), he bested a 191-entry field to win his second title. While he wasn’t able to get anything going in the Main Event, Welko closed out the stop strong by topping a 189-entry to win Event #12: $300 NLH Bounty ($100 bounties) for $5,200 after a three-way deal.

Prior to the HPT St. Louis, Welko had $164,612 in live tournament earnings including a prior career-best of $33,000 for finishing third in a $550 NLH event at last year’s Wynn summer Classic.
