2016 HPT Player of the Year Ryan Gregor Leads As 28 or 164 Survive Day 1a of HPT St. Louis

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
2016 HPT Player of the Year Ryan Gregor
2016 HPT Player of the Year Ryan Gregor

Day 1a of the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Hollywood Casino St. Louis attracted 164 runners, but after 15 levels of play, just 28 remained with 2016 HPT Player of the Year Ryan Gregor and his stack of 565,000 leading the way.

Gregor went on a late heater that included eliminating Mike Rieck in the last level of the night. It happened when Rieck got his stack of 100K all in preflop with pocket tens against Gregor’s Big Slick. Rieck flopped top set but Gregor had a flush draw, which he hit on the turn. Rieck failed to pair the board on the river and Gregor scooped a monster.

Others to bag big stacks were Jason Mangold (357,000), Joe Landazzi (322,000), Rusty Montague (303,000), and Preston Phelps (299,000), who round out the top five.

They were joined by the likes of Cory Bogert (255,000), Brett Apter (179,000), David Davenport (138,000), Shawn McCracken (132,000), Danny Hoeft (119,000), Kyle Parrish (119,000), reigning HPT and MSPT POY Aaron Johnson (98,000), and Ian Matakis (92,000).

One player who failed to find a bag on Friday was Brandon Elmore, who in Level 9 (500/1,000/1,000) got his last 8,000 all in on an ace-high flop holding ace-ten only to discover nine-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Robert Hankins had flopped two pair with ace-seven. Neither the turn nor river helped Elmore and he was sent to the rail. Hankins would follow him there before night’s end.

Likewise, HPT’s all-time money leader Craig Casino fell holding {k-}{10-} on a king high flop. He jammed and Jason Mangold, who had {a-}{q-}, called him and promptly spiked an ace on the turn to put an end to Casino’s day.

Others to fall on 1a were former World Series of Poker November Niner Dennis Phillips, MSPT Majestic Star champ Mike Shin, two-time HPT champ Nick Davidson, John “Farmboy” Kurfman, and Illinois players Gary Herstein and Mike Kamenjarin. The good news is all of those players can try again in the second flight if they so choose as Day 1b will kick off at Noon local time on Saturday.

The surviving players for both flights will combine at 11 a.m. on Sunday to play down to the final table. Once again the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.

Casino Chops One and Loses Another

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Craig Casino
Craig Casino

In the first hand Craig Casino limped from under the gun and it folded around to the big blind, who checked his option.

After the players checked to the river on a board reading {2-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and the big blind checked again, Casino put out a bet of 5,000, which was called by the big blind.

The players tabled their hands, which resulted in a chopped pot.

Casino: {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Big Blind: {q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

In the very next hand action folded to the hijack, and he raised to 5,500, getting calls from Ed McPike on the button and Casino from his big blind.

All three players checked to the river on a board reading {10-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Spades}.

Casino then bet out 11,000, which got a fold from the hijack.

McPike then asked to see Casino's stack and opted to just call.

Casino then mucked his cards after McPike tabled {j-Clubs}{k-Spades} for the king-high flush.

Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Aaron Johnson with Jeremy Smith

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Tens Hold for Kamenjarin

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mike Kamenjarin
Mike Kamenjarin

The preflop action escaped us but we do know that Mike Kamenjarin got his stack of 8,200 all in and was primed to double.

Kamenjarin: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Kamenjarin was looking to dodge an ace or some other sort of bad beat, and he did just that as the board ran out a clean {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}.

Parrish Wins Big Hand

Kyle Parrish raised to 600 preflop in the hijack. Action folded to Robert Hankins in the cutoff who three-bet to 1,800.
Parrish four-bet to 4,800 and Hankins called.

Flop came {q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}. Parrish bet 3,000 and Hankins called.

Parrish checked the {k-Clubs} on the turn. Hankins bet 4,400 and got a call from Parrish.

The {a-Spades} came on the river and Parrish pushed all-in for 12,600. Hankins thinks while counting his chips but gives up the hand.
