$1,650 Main Event

Day 1b Started

Welcome to Day 1b of HPT Golden Gates

Golden Gates
Golden Gates

The Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates $1,650 Main Event resumes today with the second of three initial flights.

Day 1a drew 102 entries yesterday, with 16 advancing to Day 2 after a 12-hour day. When chips went into bags, Aaron Frei found himself atop the leader board. He came into the last two hours of play with less than six figures-worth of chips in his stack. He then began his ascent, which was headlined by winning two huge pots with pocket aces en route to finishing the day with 408,000 in chips.

Cards are set to fly at noon local time. Players will receive 30,000 in chips and play 15 levels of 40 minutes in length. There will be 15-minute breaks at the completion of every three levels and a one-hour dinner break after Level 9. Unlimited re-entries are available through the dinner break until the start of Level 10.

Since today is the second flight of three, all who are not fortunate enough to advance will have the option to take their shot again tomorrow for the final flight of the tournament. Everybody who does advance will return for Day 2 action at 11 a.m. on Sunday to play down to the final table, which will also be live streamed Monday in addition to being televised.

PokerNews will be bringing continuing coverage of the tournament. Don’t go anywhere.

Ilich Alleges the Nuts

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante

The hijack opened to 300 and was called by Drazen Ilich out of the big blind. The flop came {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Ilich checked to his opponent, who made a continuation-bet of 500. Ilich called.

The turn came {j-Clubs} and both players checked. Ilich then bet 1,000 on the river {a-Clubs} and his opponent folded. Upon receiving a fold, Ilich flashed his opponent his hand before sending it to the muck face down. The dealer mucked it.

"The nuts," Ilich said to his opponent at the same exact time another player across the table asked what he had. "The nuts," he again confirmed.

"The second nuts," his opponent from the hand corrected.

"The nuts," Ilich re-corrected.

"The nuts," his opponent agreed. "A lot more than I had."

Rice Makes "Perfect River"

James Rice

There was 2,200 in the middle on a board of {7-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{10-Spades} and a player had 2,500 out in front of him from under the gun with action on James Rice, who was in the cutoff. Rice thought for a bit and then put out a raise to 10,000. His opponent called.

Rice tabled {q-Hearts}{q-Spades} for a full house, queens full of tens.

"That was the perfect river for you," said his opponent, showing {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for a no-good three of a kind.

Big Blind Special for Carter

Bruce Carter
Bruce Carter

There was around 4,000 in the pot as the dealer brought the turn on a board of {3-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Bruce Carter was first to act from the big blind, betting 1,900. His opponent was on the button and thought for about 10 seconds before tossing in chips to call.

The river fell {a-Hearts} and Carter bet another 2,500. His opponent went into the tank for close to a minute before putting in another call.

Carter showed {j-Spades}{6-Hearts} for a flopped two pair and took down the pot upon his opponent mucking, resulting in an early increase to his stack during Level 1.
