One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.
Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.
In doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.
“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”
For more on the reigning HPT POY, check out his full interview here on PokerNews.
PokerNews is at the Daytona Beach Racing and Card Club catching up with Dominic Siebert, the tournament supervisor for the Heartland Poker Tour. He talks with Poker News reporter Julie Marriott about the WSOP Main Event final table dealing, bad tips and smelly players!

Joe Sal opened from the big blind for about three big blind and Tom Wheaton three-bet in the small blind. Sal called and the flop rolled out .
Wheaton pushed in a bet and Sal moved all in for just a little less than Wheaton had in his stack. Wheaton called and the two tabled their hands.
Wheaton tabled ace-king with a club and Sal turned over two eights, giving him a set. The board ran out dry and Sal scooped the pot, leaving Wheaton with 7,500 and he busted just hands after with ace-nine against ace-king.

The turned board read and the pot contained about 7,500. A player threw in a bet and Tony Miles shoved for 25,300 effective.
His opponent called, tabling for an overpair of bullets but Miles was well in front when he turned over his for a straight.
Miles had his opponent drawing dead to the river, finding himself a complete double.
