Salazar Lurking, Henrichs Leading as 18 Survive Day 1a of the Season XV HPT $2,500 Championship Event

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Joshua Henrichs
Joshua Henrichs

The Season XV $2,500 Championship Event at Hollywood Casino St. Louis kicked off today with the first of three starting flights. 57 entrants hit the felt, all looking to navigate ten one-hour levels and find a bag. At the conclusion of play, just 18 remained, with Joshua Henrichs and his 230,300 chips leading the way.

Henrichs started his rise to the top by winning a three-way showdown between himself, Stephen Song and Mark Burgess. Henrichs applied the pressure late, and found himself with a comfortable stack of nearly 200 big blinds to take on to Day 2 play.

Eric Salazar, currently second in the Season XV HPT POY race, kept his slim hopes of taking over the top spot alive with a healthy bag of 191,500. Rounding out the top three is Season XV HPT East Chicago champ Chris Moon with 180,800 in chips. Other notables to make it through to Day 2 include WSOP Bracelet winner Brett Apter (105,000), Andreas Ioakmides (93,600) and Season XV HPT St. Louis champ Mike Shin (59,300).

Not everyone managed to make it through the day's play, however, and a few notables were unable to make it through to Monday's Day 2. Mike O'Neill, currently sitting in fourth place in the Season XV HPT POY race, was unable to get much going today and hit the felt early on. WSOP Bracelet winner Kyle Cartwright also found himself sans chips at the end of the night, as did Lily Kiletto, Jason Mangold, and Will Berry.

Current HPT POY points leader Nick Pupillo has arrived and will be in action tomorrow in what looks to be a much larger Day 1b flight, as other HPT regulars such as last year's Season XIV $2,500 Championship winner Josh Reichard, Todd Sladek, and Gary Herstein, will all be looking to join the 18 that managed to find a bag today in their quest for the final HPT trophy of the year.

Be sure to stay tuned right here to PokerNews as we catch all the action straight from the tournament floor as the second of three starting flights kicks off at Noon here at Hollywood Casino St. Louis.

Rossitto, Williams Trending Up; Martines Out

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Stephen Martines
Stephen Martines

Stephen Martines limped in from under the gun, and Freddy Williams raised to 3,000 from the cutoff. Martines called.

Martines checked the {9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} flop to Williams, who bet 6,200. Martines, who only had 21,000 behind, folded. Martines would bust a short time later.

Williams now assumes one of the top stacks in the room, while at Table 41, Michael Rossitto has been on a tear in a short time, running his stack up to near the leaders in the room with around an hour-and-a-half of play remaining for the evening.

Mike Shin

Freddy Williams opened to 2,800 in early position, called only by Mike Shin in the small blind.

The flop came {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, Shin checked, and Williams continued for 4,600. Without much hesitation, Shin raised to 15,500.

Williams thought it over for several minutes before mucking, and Shin took down the pot.

Moon Triples, Mangold Out

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jason Mangold
Jason Mangold

Matt Higgins had 13,500 in front of him from middle position, and was facing two shoves; one from Jason Mangold in the hijack for 46,600, and another from Chris Moon on the button for 24,400. Higgins pantomimed kissing his chips away before placing in a call to put both players at risk.

Chris Moon: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Jason Mangold: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Matt Higgins: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

Moon's queens held on a {2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{k-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs} board to earn the triple, while Higgins essentially broke even with the side pot, and Mangold was left to hit the rail.

Sailor's Sharin' the Love

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Brad Sailor
Brad Sailor

Brad Sailor checked a {3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} board from the big blind, and Andreas Ioakmides studied the board for a few moments before checking behind from the cutoff.

The {5-Diamonds} fell on the river, and Sailor bet 5,500. Ioakmides called, and Sailor tabled {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a rivered gutshot straight. Ioakmides looked unhappy as he tossed his hand to the muck, and Sailor said, "You gave me a free card with a queen? I love you!'

Apter's Set Felts Two

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

Bradley Heitmeyer bet 5,000 from the small blind on a {8-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop, and the under-the-gun player called. Brett Apter then shoved for 40,000 from middle position, and Heitmeyer called off his last 20,800. The under-the-gun player tanked for a minute before calling off his last 25,000.

Bradley Heitmeyer: {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Under-the-Gun: {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Brett Apter: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Apter's set of tens was looking to dodge the straight draws of his opponents, and he succeeded on a {k-Hearts} turn and {4-Hearts} river to earn the double knockout.

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
John Hughes
John Hughes

With 12,000 already in the pot, John Hughes bet 7,000 from the big blind on a {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop, and Hamid Izadi moved all-in for 18,000 on the button. Hughes made the call.

Hamid Izadi: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
John Hughes: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Izadi could only shake his head as he discovered his queens were crushed by the kings of Hughes. No help would come on the {9-Hearts} turn or {7-Diamonds} river, and Izadi hit the rail.

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Hamid Izadi
Hamid Izadi

Four players limped in to see a {5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop together, and action checked to Mark Burgess on the hijack. He fired out 1,100, and only Hamid Izadi in the small blind made the call.

Both players checked the {8-Diamonds} turn, and Izadi checked again on the {7-Clubs} river. Burgess bet 2,000, and Izadi called. Burgess tabled {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for sevens and fives, but Izadi held the winner with his {10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for tens-up.

Kelly Rhoades
Kelly Rhoades

Kelly Rhoades bet 2,600 from the small blind on a {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} board, and Andreas Ioakmides raised to 6,000 from middle position. Roger Campbell called in the hijack, Bradley Heitmeyer folded in the cutoff, and Brad Sailor folded on the button.

Rhoades checked the {10-Diamonds} river to Ioakmides, who bet 5,000. Campbell and Rhoades both called. Ioakmides tabled {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}, which had Campbell's {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} bested, but Rhoades flipped over {j-Hearts}{4-Clubs} for trip fours and the winner.

Salazar Cracks Aces

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Eric Salazar
Eric Salazar

A player raised to 1,000 from the hijack, and Eric Salazar called on the button. The small blind three-bet to 4,000, and both the hijack and Salazar called.

The small blind bet 5,600 on the {j-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop, and the hijack jammed for 26,200. Salazar called, and the small blind tank-folded.

Opponent: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Eric Salazar: {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Salazar's flopped straight had his opponent's aces in bad shape, and the {5-Spades} turn left the hijack drawing dead to the {5-Diamonds} river.
