Joseph Checks Back Wisely

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Shawn Roberts
Shawn Roberts

The player in the cutoff opened to 2,000, and the blinds defended—Shawn Roberts in the small and Johanssy Joseph in the big.

The {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop checked through. On the {6-Spades} turn, Roberts checked, Joseph fired 3,500, and only Roberts called.

They went heads up to the {8-Diamonds} river, which quickly went check-check.

Roberts tabled his {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for a rivered straight.

Hooks Hold for Hopkins

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante

Following an under-the-gun limp from Shawn Roberts, Kevin Hopkins opened to 2,600 in the cutoff and was called by both the small blind and Roberts.

All three checked a flop of {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. The small blind and Roberts checked again on the {2-Diamonds} turn, and Hopkins flung out a bet of 3,000. The small blind called, and Roberts threw his hand away.

The {7-Clubs} river went check-check, and Hopkins flipped over his {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for one pair and the win.

Welko Raises the Turn

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Craig Welko
Craig Welko

A player raised to 2,400 from middle position, and Jonathan Lawson called in the small blind, as did Craig Welko in the big blind.

All three players checked the {q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{j-Spades} flop, and Lawson bet 3,500 on the {8-Clubs} turn. Welko raised to 11,000, and both the middle-position player and Lawson quickly folded.

Defending Champ Reichard Enters the Fray

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Josh Reichard
Josh Reichard

The field here at the HPT Season XV $2,500 Championship Event just got a little tougher, as defending champ Josh Reichard just took his seat.

Reichard topped a field of 434 runners at Ameristar East Chicago and walked away with $221,294 after defeating Bobby Noel in heads-up play in last year's Championship Event. Reichard managed to follow up his success in Season XIV with another victory this season, taking down September's HPT Ameristar East Chicago Main Event for another $186,812 in prize money after besting a field of 579 entries.

Reichard will be looking to not only defend his title, but add a third HPT trophy to an already packed wall of accolades for the young Wisconsin pro, and we'll be following him all weekend long.

Stumpf Out-Nuts the Nuts

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Nathaniel Stumpf
Nathaniel Stumpf

The table folded around to Nate Stumpf in the hijack, who opted to open to 1,800. Christopher Audrain called in the small blind, and they were off to a flop heads up.

Audrain checked the {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop, after which Stumpf put out 2,200. Audrain added a gray 5k to the mix, check-raising to 7,200. Stumpf called.

The {5-Hearts} turn fell, and Audrain fired 16,000. Stumpf ripped in his stack, and Audrain rose from his seat, asking for a count. The dealer counted 58,700 total, and Audrain took a moment to stare Stumpf down before making the call, asking him, "Do you have a heart?" as he threw in a handful of 5ks.

Stumpf: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Audrain: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}

With Audrain drawing dead versus the nut flush, the {a-Clubs} river was irrelevant, and he shipped a chunk of his healthy stack across the table to Stumpf.

Schaal Sends Hammers Packing

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Austin Schaal
Austin Schaal

A player raised to 3,000 from early position, and Tom Hammers called, leaving himself 1,600 behind. Melissa Bryne called next to act, and Austin Schaal made the call from the cutoff.

Action checked to Hammers on a {7-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop, and he put his last 1,600 in the pot. Bryne folded, while Schaal and the early-position player called.

Both live players checked the {k-Clubs} turn, and the early-position player check-called a bet of 4,000 from Schaal on the {10-Clubs} river. Schaal turned over {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}, besting the {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} of the early-position player, while Hammers showed the {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for inferior trips, telling Schaal, "Nice hand, bud," before leaving the tournament area.
