Bienvenidos a Uruguay!

Good morning and welcome to PokerNews' coverage of PokerStars.net LAPT Punta del Este! While the eyes of the poker world are fixed on the NAPT event in Las Vegas, the sun chasers have come south to spend a week of their summer in beautiful Uruguay. This stop has been on the LAPT schedule for all three seasons, quickly becoming a favorite poker destination among the players and media alike.

The luxurious Mantra Resort is abuzz with activity as the noon start time approaches. A rather important looking press conference is just coming to an end, and nearly 300 players are mulling about the tournament area, ready to get rolling. Among them are a strong contingent of locals and visitors from nearby countries, but there are a handful of pale invaders and tan crusaders lurking about as well.

We've already spotted Dutch Team PokerStars Pro Pieter de Korver sipping on a neon beverage of some sort, and Stephen "stevie444" Chidwick is mulling about the tournament room as well. The Latin America pros are here too; Humberto Brenes (and brother Alex), Alexandre Gomes, and Angel Guillen are among those we've already run into.

We're about ten minutes away from kickoff time, so sit tight; we'll be back with the 'shuffle up and deal' shortly!

A Few More Faces

The Team PokerStars Pros from this region are out in full force. Apart from those we've already mentioned, here are a few of the other familiar faces we've spotted so far.

Team PokerStars Pro Argentina: Jose Ignacio Barbero, Leo Fernandez, and Veronica Dabul

Team PokerStars Pro Brazil: Alexandre Gomes and Andre Akkari

Team PokerStars Pro Mexico: Angel Guillen

Rumor has it Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck will be joining her amigos from Team Brazil shortly as well.

Man Down

Philipe D'auteuil
Philipe D'auteuil
Philipe D'auteuil has become one of the early beneficiaries of the not-afraid-to-go-broke-in-the-first-level Latin American style of play.

We caught up to the table just as the chips were being pushed to D'auteuil, so the betting action is mysterious. What we can tell you is that the young Canadian flopped the nuts with {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs} on a board that came {2-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}. His opponent went all the way with {K-Clubs} {9-Diamonds}, and that was that.

D'auteuil is one of the early chip leaders, sitting pretty right on 40,000 now. We say "one of" because at least one other player has been eliminated here in the first few minutes.

Slow Start for Gomes

Alexandre Gomes raised to 250 in the hijack and was called by the player on the button. The blinds folded and the flop came down {3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{A-Clubs}.

Gomes bet 400, but was raised to 900 by his opponent. The Brazilian pro called, delivering the {K-Diamonds} on the turn. He checked to his opponent who fired 1,700 into the pot. Gomes gave it up, dropping to just under 17,000.

La Mesa del Muerte

With a field of unknowns and relatively inexperienced players, it only takes two or three exceptional players to make a table comparatively very difficult.

The early candidate for Table of Death goes to the one in the far corner of the room. Team PokerStars Pro Veronica Dabul occupies the five seat, and she'll have to deal with Team PokerStars Pro Gualter Salles on her immediate left for the balance of the day.

Another Tough Table

Upstairs, in the very back corner of the dimly-lit casino ballroom, another tough table lurks.

Team PokerStars Pro Mexico Angel Guillen is holding court up there, and he has been joined by a surprise entrant. Neil Channing has made the trip across the pond to play, and he's found himself across the table from Guillen. Maybe he was in search of a soft field, or maybe he's looking to work on his tan mid-winter; either way, we're glad to have another fun table to keep an eye on.

De Korver Down

On a board of {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, Pieter de Korver bet and was called by one player. The turn brought the {A-Clubs} and de Korver checked, resulting in a bet of 3,000 from his opponent. Pieter called, seeing the {5-Diamonds} hit the river.

He checked, and was put to a tough decision when his opponent bet 10,000. After about a minute he made the call, but was beat when his opponent tabled {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a flush. De Korver flashed {A-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for two pair, but fell to 8,000.
